I'm in doubt, so I'll turn to you guys to see, what feedback you'll give me.
Family is going to BKK - vacation. First time in BKK for wife and kid (2 y.o.).
I allready have a reservation at the Royal Orchid Sheraton - in a junior suite, Tower level. Thus, nice room, great river view and lounge access (except during evening cocktail times). Easy access to malls and restaurants.
I have been looking at the Conrad BKK (I've been there before). Good package deal. Executive room (can expect upgrade due to elite status). Location is okay (not rivew view though). Can't remember how far to restaurants or malls. Club level access (kids not allowed) :(
I've also concidered the all-suite SLH hotel: Lebua at State Tower. Great prices and offers. However, I've read some bad reviews of this property.
As I said I'm in doubt about which property to stay at... Any comments will be appreciated very much. Want to make sure that wife and kid gets an opportunity to get some feeling of BKK...

How about the Millenium Hilton ? It is right opposite the Sheraton on the other side of the river. The hotel is quite new - only about a year old. Great Exec lounge on the top level.

The Sheraton would be good for access to the river and possible trips with the kids ! Though the rooms are pretty poor, the lounge is pretty good. Me ? Without kids the Conrad everytime especially for the bathroom alone !

I'd chose a hotel on the river for a first time visitor to Bangkok. There's so much that can be seen along the river. It's lots of fun to take the local ferry to the various sights - the Royal Palace, the Barge Museum, Wat Arun, and more. Your hotel can also get a private long tail boat for you to take you thru the klongs.
I've been to Bangkok many times. I love the Conrad, and I stay there myself. But when I took first time visitors in January, I chose a hotel on the river (Marriott Riverside) because it gives a much more interesting look at the city.

Agree with above - river location is great for your first time. I personally prefer the Intercon or Grand Hyatt Erawan - in the middle of some of the best shopping on earth - but then I've done the river already. It's sort of like the Paris Hilton -which I don't particularly love, but for first timers, the view of the Eiffel Tower out your window is incomprable.

there are two types of suites there.
1.) in the tower on the left elevator side which are all new and stylish.
2.) on the right level elevator, the suites are super old!
if you stay there on points and get a suite upgrade its only a good deal if you get the rooms on the new side.

You do not say what status you have with SPG, but I would strongly recommend the SGS. This property has become my BKK favourite, although my quest to renew Plat this year will probably see me slip in some stays at the Westin and Meridien.
Opinions on the river are divided, personally I do not really see the point of the riverside location since you are outside the heart of the City, I much prefer to be closer to the best selection of clubs, bars, restaurants, shops etc. I know several people who hated BKK on their first visit (staying riverside) but who subsequently changed their mind when staying in more central locations (Conrad, SGS etc.). The river view isn't that spectacular either, certainly not in the same league as the harbour views in HK or SIN. Why not try both and see what you prefer.
Taxis are cheap and plentiful in BKK, I would prefer to take taxis between the sites (or hire a driver by the day) than shuttle about on the boat (especially in the heat of summer), but I am sure many others prefer the experience of using the boats.

i dont agree. the SGS is a hotel with old suites.
i mean the suites are a bit ritz style, nice but old.
if you like this kind of suites ok, but the plaza athenee is my favorite hotel at the moment.
good suites, nice amenities , good lounge, and staff was good.

Thanks for all your comments.
Spoke to ROS today - they say that all suites on Tower floors are renovated.
No status on SPG... :( So no additional upgrades I think).

I quite like the style of the SGS, ok not cutting edge interior design, but 2 full bathrooms in the suites (very useful) and free bar and breakfast (not the poorish offering in many lounges) and free wired and wireless internet throughout the property. The new wall mounted 42 inch LCD screens in the living room and bedroom make a huge difference to the available space too, and the beds at the SGS are more comfortable than the Meridien and i find the SGS location slightly more convenient (with direct BTS access).
I have not stayed at the Meridien since becoming Plat, and am really holding off trying this property again until the building site next door has completed work.
All that said life would be boring (and upgrades rarer) if we all liked the same thing :)

I'm going to Bangkok for the first time in March. I've got a reservation at the Conrad, but am also considering the Millennium Hilton. I really like the Conrads at which I've stayed in the past (HKG, SIN, BRU, IND), finding them generally a step up from the regular Hiltons in terms of elegance and comfort (gotta love the Asian Conrads' stuffed animals).
How do the BKK Conrad and Hilton differ in terms of room size, amenities, personnel, etc.? Just how much of a location advantage is there to staying on the river? Might an interest in taking in the view be satisfied by drinks/dinner at a rooftop restaurant (if so, recommendations)? I know that cabs are cheap and plentiful, and even with Bangkok's notorious traffic, it's probably faster to get around by cab than by the river. I'm sure I'll spend most of my time around the Old City and Dusit, so that probably argues in favor of the river location. Nevertheless, there seem to be a number of things closer to the Conrad that I'll also want to see (e.g., Jim Thompson's House, several parks, and the night bazaar). Suggestions greatly welcomed.
