The HGI at PVD opened about a year ago, but you would never know it, from the condition of the rooms
Thought the rooms were a great size, loved the free high speed internet access, but . . . I was here to get a good night's sleep. It wasn't going to happen.

Lumpy, cheap, poor quality foam/polyster pillows.
Scratchy, coarse linens.
Nasty brown, thin, polyster blankets. (though thankfully a top sheet to cover the nasty blanket)
Dirty bedspreads (the kind where you have to use your foot to scrape off the bed and kick in to the corner because you wouldn 't want to touch it).

I typically stay at Hamptons or Hiltons, this was my first stay at a HGI.
If HGI is not trying to keep up with the "bedding" wars, they have nothing to worry about because they haven't even tried here.

Like you, I don't usually select a HGI, but I have stayed at 3 in the last 3 years. None was as bad as you described, and only one was relatively new. Service in all was quite good. I don't recall lumpy matresses or scratchy linens. Maybe PVD is a renegade property and needs reporting.

I stay at HGI all the time and have never had one that sounded anything like that.... In fact I prefer HGI to HI.

Sounds like a very isolated case to me. I've stayed in maybe a dozen HGIs from Maine to Ohio to Illinois to California and never had any bedding issues.

Scratchy, coarse linens.

Same for the HGI @ PDX :td:

But, most of them are quite nice.

I've never had a bad room/experience like you listed at a HGI. I'd *much* rather stay at HGI than Hampton. (not even talking about the more airline miles :)

I've had mediocre beds at HGI several times . . . New Orleans; Mobile, AL; Arlington, VA; and Albuquerque were the last four I tried. All poor sheets IIRC. HI in Biloxi, MS and Albuquerque (but not New Orleans) had the nice bed!

Foam pillows give me a better night's sleep than down. They offer more resistance. Therefore, I have to request them specially at fancy properties where down is standard. This is one reasons I like HGI; another is the full "made-to-order" breakfast.

Your other bedding gripes are worth taking note of. The sheets and cover can be thin. They should just use duvets - much easier and classier.
