I'm staying at the Ventian at the moment but am checking out today. My g/f wanted to use the gym yesterday and they tried to charge her $35. She refused on principle and joined me at CES instead.
I really do think that charging for the gym is wrong when you're resident especially when I'm already paying $899 a night. Having said that, I asked room service for some hot water as part of my breakfast order and they charged me $2 for that.
The Venetian is convenient for CES but I doubt I'm going to stay here again and certainly not at these prices - crazy.

Although $35 is a bit high in my opinion, I have not stayed in a hotel in Vegas that did not charge something for gym use. Monte Carlo and Luxor are both $20/visit; can't remember the fees from my other recent visits. I guess they figure if you are in the gym, you're not gambling, and the entire city is designed to get you into the casinos. I noticed on my last visit that no matter where I stay, there is never anything on TV; you get your local channels but IIRC it's not all the local channels, and rarely do you get HBO. Rooms that look pretty and spacious but don't have a very comfortable "flow" or chairs that always feel a bit weird after you've sat in them for more than a half-hour or so. And I've never seen gym fees be comped (YMMV though).
I'm not saying that I agree with it, only that's where the concept comes from. Back when my ex was selling casino equipment in Atlantic City and Vegas, he joined the local YMCA just so he could have free guest priveleges in the Vegas and AC ones.

There's a gym at the Venetian?
One day I'll have to get out of the casino to take a look. Never saw the pools, either.

Bellagio is $25 per visit.
However, if you book a treatment in the spa (which is very, very nice) you can use the gym that day.
Also, if you book via Amex Fine Hotels rate, you get a few gym passes as well (I can't recall if it is only two per stay or one per day).

Must go patent my treadmill/slot machine now. That would eliminate the need for fees.

Harrah's waives fees for the gym/spa areas at some of their properties, such as Paris, for Diamond and 7 Star Total Reward members. Otherwise, it is $25 to $35 depending on the property.
I was always under the impression that the properties in Vegas charged for Gym access, since most of the hotels are SO LARGE --- if they didn't restrict gym access in some way (i.e. a fee) they might not be able to accomodate all the people.

Maybe the fitness center makes sense to discourage people from using it and use the casino instead. But that doesn't explain how places like the Wynn that will charge you a fee to receive a package for you. I think that is pure nickel-and-dime.

To OP, I agree $35 is a bit steep, however, FWIW its really Canyon Ranch Spa that's charging you the bucks ;). But remember, its not a gym but a fitness center and thus the premium :p.

So do yourself a favor. Get a deep tissue massage and they'll throw in the gym/spa use for the day, gratis. If you're at the Wynn, follow up with The Deluge. Who knows, your luck might improve.

The entire 4th floor is worth seeing (there is a private elevator from the 2nd floor shopping mall if you're not a hotel guest). Aside from the pool area, the Wolfgang Puck outdoor cafe, and the Canyon Ranch Spa, there is the Canyon Ranch Spa Cafe, the best place to eat breakfast or lunch at the Venetian -- and its best kept secret, never ever a wait to get in.
My wife had her hair styled there (at the Canyon Ranch Spa) by the guy who does Siegfried.

Before I went to Vegas I thought the idea of charging for the gym was obscene but after seeing all the crowds, I was glad that they charged so that the gym was actually a relaxing experience.

I've stayed an entire visit on the 4th floor. I did see people walking by in bathrobes.

We stayed at the Polo Towers, and walking back and forth to the Sands convention center was more exercise than any gym could have given us!

Westin Casurina is free to use the basic, but decent gym (just need keycard) and I think it's open until midnight. However, there is a FEE if you want to use the spa facilities (whirpool, showers, lockers, etc.)
Don't forget the 24 Hour Fitness at LAS airport, good excuse to get to the airport early and avoid the loooong lines.

Hi,
Some hotel/casinos offer spa/gym passes as part of the rate package ( ie Mandalay Bay just before Christmas offered rooms for $99 per night including 2 spa passes ( worth $27 each)
The LV Hilton gives free gym access to HH Silver/Gold/Diamond

I think the people who say they need to limit access given the size of the hotels are correct, as well as those who say that they want you gambling, not on the treadmill.
But it's also part of Vegas' obsession with nickel and diming people for every possible thing, which I find tacky and distasteful. Pretty soon you're going to have to start swiping your credit card to use the elevator to get to your room instead of the stairs at these places.

FWIW, the gym at the Venetian (if you can call it a "gym" - its really a full-on spa) is one of the only gyms I'll pay to use when I travel. The facilities are great and I've found it to be well worth the daily fee.

Whoa - you got hosed. Room rates fell dramatically in the week or so prior to CES, in most hotels (Wynn and Bellagio seemed the notable exceptions), as I guess booking were light. Venetian was going for ~$250 a few days prior, and I heard about someone who walked up w/o a reservation and got a significantly lower rate.

The Stratosphere charges a "resort fee" which includes free access to their gym. But, as others have surmised, it gets very busy and most of the equipment is occupied. It's not very big either.
The Aladdin offers free access to their gym for elite members of their slot club (not for Starwood members, unfortunately).

What can I say except .... grrrrr!
To be honest, normally I would have checked the online rate again within the cancellation period but I just didn't get a chance. If I go next year, I'd rather try the Wynn, Four Seasons or Bellagio in that order. The Venetian rooms are just okay. Add to that the penny pinching and by that I mean the $2 for some hot water, it's a place I would visit again (obviously) but would be unlikely to stay at.
