One of my buddies wants us to stay there (coming in Feb. 8-12). Has anyone stayed there (likes/dislikes) and how far is it from the South end of the Strip (Luxor/NYNY/Mirage)? Would it be better to take taxi's or rent a car (there will be six of us)?
Are other option (for us anyway) would be to stay somewhere on the strip but we can't seem to agree on a place. We have looked at Hooters, Luxor and others.
Thanks.

I have not stayed there, but I find that cheapovegas has some very accurate (and hilarious) reviews: http://cheapovegas.com/vegas_casino_full.php?hotel_id=1079
Room Quality: Slightly better than average sized rooms with nice furnishings in a sort of depressing mix of yellows and browns. The only real highlight is the big-... plasma screen on the wall that broadcasts mostly unspectacular local channels. In the regular rooms for us regular folk you have your choice of a king with a loveseat by the window, or two queens with a reading chair (or watching TV chair--your choice). The bathrooms are okay, but below the standard set by the newer hotels, and have a tub/shower combo. Internet is available for a ludicrous daily fee. There is a coffee machine in each room, and thankfully, they don't charge you to use that.
Distance is about six miles from Luxor. I always like having a car in Vegas, but six probably means you need a minivan which can get expensive.
Where are you planning on spending most of your time? What are the chances that all six of you will want to stay together all the time? I know with my friends that it is not very probable. That's why we stay center strip (Flamingo). Everyone can do as they please, and we set up a meeting time /place if everyone wants to go out together. No way I'm being on call to cart people around with my car when they want to go somewhere, nor do I want to leave or be stranded if the person with the car wants to leave. There is plenty to do for everyone within walking distance if you book south or center strip.
Being as I spend about six hours a day in my room in Vegas, and 5:45 of those are sleeping, my criteria is cheap, clean, convenient and quiet - pretty much in that order.

Haven't stayed but have driven down to see a movie there. It's at the extreme south end of the Strip, 3 or 4 miles south of Mandalay Bay.
Rooms are new and have flat panel TVs, so no problems there - but it's about as far away from the Strip as you can get. Even downtown/Fremont Street hotels are closer.
For six guys, I'd rent a car, probably an SUV.
Luxor gets reasonable reviews and at least with Luxor, you're walking distance to many other hotels.
Aladdin has a $169 rate at www.starwood.com. That would put you smack in the center Strip.
Also check www.kayak.com for a complete list of hotels and rates for your dates. One example from there is Bally's, at $152, a few dollars less than Luxor and again smack in center Strip.

It is a bit of a trek from the Mandalay, although traffic is much better en route compared to what most visitors are used to on the main Strip.
Not as nice as the Red Rock, but then again, not as far as that one.

I stayed there a three weeks back, the room was spacious, clean and modern. As a local, it was a great, fast, cheap getaway. Whether it works for you and the buddies depends on what's important to you.

Coworker stayed there when it was South Coast and swore she'd never do it again. I don't know if that was her first trip to Vegas or not, but had a very unfavorable review of the property and the distance. Haven't been there, but have seen it in the distance when driving between the Strip and Green Valley Ranch. It's definately a ways out there; at least Stratosphere is marginally within walking distance to other stuff.

There is a shuttle from South Point to Mandalay Bay
http://www.southpointcasino.com/hotel/shuttle-schedule.php
Latest return from MB is 12:30 Am which will likely mean that you will be taking a cab back some nights.
I agree with tev999 that staying on the strip will be easier for everyone to come and go and make for an easy meeting place when you all want to be together.

I live close to it on the other side of I-15 and go there often. As far as a locals casino goes, it's fine. If you've ever been to Suncoast it is almost an exact duplicate. Haven't seen the rooms but I know they are really spacious and the hotel is only a year old so everything's new. Service for me personally has always been good, nothing exceptional but no complaints.
While it's on LV Blvd it is by no means a "Strip" hotel. Whoever said it's further than downtown, not quite that far. It's about 5 miles from Mandalay Bay. Except for 3pm to 6pm on Friday there is not much traffic on that stretch of LV Blvd so it's at most a 10 minute drive and there will be no shortage of taxis available to you.

Thanks for all the replies. We got it worked out. Staying at the Aladdin for three nights (middle strip, 87 per room) and Hooters for one night (39 per room, hard to beat that). I am glad we found those deals because I really didn't want to stay that far away.

Good for you! If you're Starwood Gold, ask for a resort view room in the 30s, even numbers - xx30, xx32, xx34, xx36, xx38 - for nice views of the Bellagio fountains (floor 15 or higher). If you're a Plat, you should get a strip suite.
If you don't have Starwood status, it still won't hurt to ask for a regular room in the 80s or 90s, odd numbered: xx81, xx83, xx85, xx87, xx89, xx91, xx93, xx95. Again, 15th floor or higher. Those also have fountain views.
And of course, Hooters has its own views. :D :D :D

Stayed at this property a few weeks ago. Overall liked it a lot, however, one morning, got awoken not once but twice by housekeeping. The first time they came in while I was asleep and immediately apologized before leaving. Then an hour + later, knocked again. This time I jumped out of bed. I said we were still sleeping and they apologized. I checked the doorknob to see if I had forgotten to put out the Do Not Disturb sign and was shocked to see that it was there. When I looked at the housekeeper in the hall, stating quite firmly that I had a freaken sign on the door...she replied in a whiny tone, "I know..."
I was furious. I filled out a survey and sent it in. Just got an e-mail reply back apologizing and noting that it will be fixed in the future...but no compensation offer whatsover. Think I'll ever go back to somewhere like that?
Never. Terrible customer service. :td:

I have stayed there a couple of times (once as part of a convention and once on my own). Its six miles from Mandalay to SouthPoint (another 3 miles to the M resort). They have a shuttle but I prefer a car because it gives me more options. The trip from Mandalay (or strip) to SP can either be done via I-15 (the Silverado exit) or via LV Blvd or via shuttle or taxi.
I like SouthPoint. It is a large casino with lots of options for food of different types and they are the liberal with comps (both food and room for people staying there). I am by no means a hi-roller on mid-strip but am able to get free rooms, nights, and food for the asking in the pit. They don't have the breadth of carnival games that other casinos have but a smallish poker room, sports book, BJ/craps/roulette/3cp/pai gow.
My family just came back from there and raved about the Italian restaurant. I ate at the buffet, coffee shop, hot dog stand, deli, and oyster bar and was happy with all of them.
