This isn't (apparently) in the Qantas 'news' thread nor the main thread. It is intertwined with the opening somewhat of routes between Oz and the Mid-East. SMH reports (http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/study-of-open-skies-plan-to-go-ahead/2007/01/08/1168104920031.html):

I can't seem to edit the heading- saying the minister backs this study is more accurate than supporting an actual open skies policy. ;)

FEDERAL Tourism Minister Fran Bailey has overridden Qantas's attempts to derail a report aimed at assessing the economic benefits of opening Australia up to more foreign airlines.

Amid growing pressure for the Government to scale back its protection of Qantas on the main international routes, the Tourism Minister has personally intervened to ensure that a study goes ahead to examine the effect on Australia's tourism industry of increased airline capacity from the Middle East.

There are suggestions the study, if favourable to increased competition, could add to pressure on the Federal Government to follow Canada's lead and adopt an "Open Skies" policy.

As for whether anything comes of the report (or any report regarding 'open skies'), let's see what its opponents do next.
