Hi,
I was returning from PVG on 3rd Jan in Upper class and at check in there were notices on the boards and on the check in desks advertising upgrades for;
Y to PE for £199
PE to Upper Class for £199
AND
Y to Upper Class for £399
These fares seemed very good indeed ( I have not seen them advertising them so openly before)
I do not know what the take up was but on obard Y was full but there were a few seats in PE ( the new leather seats - aircraft was Silver lady) and Upper Class was about 50% full.

Thanks for that,
I will be flying Gatwick to Havana in March - do you think that these upgrades will be available on this route? I travel to Newark twice weekly usually from LHR in Upper Class, but I am going to Cuba with my family so we are all booked in PE!

Hi ianmc26,
Welcome to flyertalk.
To be honest I think the chances of these sort of upgrade fares are very small for Havana because;
(1) This was the first time I have seen the fares being offered.
(2) To Havana the aircraft is a 747-400 with only 14 Upper Class suites coompared to 45 suites on the A340-600 to Shanghai and most of the UCS will be taken up prior to the day of departure.

I wonder if they're trialling this out on thar route before rolling it out across the network
If it's anything like the comparative offerings with BA then paid-for upgrades will never be offered ex-London, only from outstations on the return journeys. HKG is a classic example of this.

Virgin frequently offer paid-for upgrades at both LHR and LGW (as well as MAN). Usually £200-400 Y to W and £500-1000 W to J, space available of course.
What's unique about THIS offer was the low cost of a J upgrade.
I upgraded from Economy to PE for 249 GBP at JFK once - that was from a cheap N ticket on a very full flight.
