Starwood Preferred Guest - Was I being cheeky? Asking for upgrade SFO St Regis

We are kicking off a three week tour of California and Vegas at the SFO St Regis. I am a gold member, and have booked a deluxe room on the 'magic of four' package.
Since this is the start of our trip I hoped we might be upgraded to Grand Deluxe or Exec premier, and called the front desk, the manager was out but I got his email address, and sent a short polite note requesting if the upgrade was possible.
This was on Tuesday, no reply yet. Of course he could be on vacation etc.
Should I expect a reply / was it an unreasonable ask?

I would be surprised if you *don't* get upgraded. I have stayed there many times as a Gold, and was upgraded every time without asking. The difference between the Deluxe and Grand Deluxe rooms is the view, BTW. The rooms themselves are identical. The Executive Premier rooms are different -- more glass, on the corner, but they seem a little smaller and you have views directly into your neighbor's room (and vice versa). I'd take the Grand Deluxe over the Premier rooms.

Thanks Mike, despite having a Gold card (via Amex) this is my first stay in a Starwood.

When I was a Gold (comped originally through Ameniti) I asked for an upgrade on every stay. There is no harm in asking and as a Gold I scored an upgrade about 50% of the time (ranging from a Deluxe room to a suite).
IME, if you e-mail ahead of time you they are generally more accomodating.

Nothing wrong in asking. After all, the squeaky wheel usually gets the grease. ;)
I think you will get a reply. I don't think it was necessarily a reasonable request. A better one would be to ask if your deluxe room could be "on higher floors, corner rooms, newly renovated rooms, or rooms with preferred views."
