Over Christmas I was given a very nice golf umbrella as a gift and I would like to take it home with me. Unfortunately, it is too big to fit in any of my checked baggage. Will the TSA allow the umbrella as a carry on, and will AS give me any problems as I already have a laptop bag + carry on bag?

Also, what about cheese, is that allowed as a carryon? I have some good stuff here in the freezer and I don't want it to go to waste on my family who will not appreciate it for its goodness :)

Bump please....I am travelling tomorrow and would like to know this as soon as possible. Tsa.gov has no relevant info for me. Thanks

From the TSA site:

Umbrellas- allowed in carry-on baggage once they have been inspected to ensure that prohibited items are not concealed.

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Cheese may or may not be permitted, depending on whether the screener thinks it's a gel. Pies have not been premitted at many airports... If less than 3 ounces, put it in your baggie.

I have carried small umbrellas on in my carry-on without any problem (or additional inspection) in the past.

Not sure if this is treated the same, but I have carried a rollaboard, a laptop case and a tennis racket (not in a case) all over the country on different airlines and have never had a problem.

Had one in carry-ons - no problems. Then again, they didn't check my freedom baggie either.

well how big is a golf umbrela  if its big they take it as special luggage (or whats that called) but dont forget to go and find it delivered to a separate belt/place in the luggage hall at arrival.

I bet an umbrella is hit or miss. Some people will get away with bringing it on--others won't. If you try, have a back up plan--just in case!

Worked out fine for me. The umbrella had to go through the xray and that was it. I must admit that I did feel like a fool carrying an umbrella (in Seattle of all places!). If you are from Seattle, you know that it's almost blasphemy to use/carry an umbrella unless you are a female!

Overhead space was cramped but I just shoved the umbrella above a bunch of other bags. I just froze the cheese and stuck it in my checked baggage.

I have found myself in similar situations on several ocassions and can unequivocably advise you that maybe! I hope you benefit from my experience, and hope that someone enjoys the cheese.
