"New Delhi, Jan 1. (PTI): Passengers of a KLM flight from Delhi to Amsterdam, their departure to the Dutch Capital delayed by one-and-a-half days, complained they went through a harrowing time due to the callous attitude of the airline staff.

The flight KL-872 was scheduled to take off from Delhi airport at 1:30 am last night, but it was cancelled due to fog.

"I tried the airline numbers yesterday to find out if the flight was on time, but nobody took the calls. When I reached the airport, I found the flight had been cancelled," said S N Shukla, an MNC executive from Hyderabad, who was going to Amsterdam to attend a business meeting.

He complained that KLM did not put up the passengers at any hotel, asking them to make arrangements for themselves and even turned down their requests to be put on any other flight to Europe.

"We were told yesterday that the flight had been diverted to Mumbai due to fog and it would be arriving in Delhi today afternoon. But today when we reached the airport, we were told that flight will take off only tomorrow afternoon," said Amit, a Boston-based MNC executive also flying to Amsterdam.

"Flight delays happen, but the airline staff should not be rude with us and should help us," he said.

An airline official, however, said the passengers were provided with hotel accommodation last night.

"We provided the passengers with hotel accommodation last night as well as today. The flight is taking off tomorrow afternoon," the official said.

The airlines said, the delay was because of circumstances beyond its control.

"The fog suddenly descended late at night, which is why the passengers could not be informed well in advance about the delay," the official said.

On the passengers' request to be put on some other flight, the official said, "It was not possible because of the heavy rush due to New Year."

Actually, Amsterdam is the capital of The Netherlands as set forth by the Dutch Constitution.
However, Amsterdam is not the capitol given that the seat of government is situated in The Hague.

Many people, especially those educated outside of Europe, don't know this bit of trivia.
It seems that congratulations for solid research are in order for our respected Indian journalist.

This may also add to the credibility of the various other facts reported...glad I wasn't flying from Dehli then.

KL872/01JAN is now expected to arrive at AMS today, Jan 02, at 8.35pm local time, or almost 40 hours late indeed. The aircraft was kept on the ground in BOM and the crew given minimum rest before the return, and as such the extra 1 day delay. KL872/02JAN operated on time and landed this morning just after 6am in AMS.

It seems as if, although the initial delay was caused by fog, the further delay was a deliberate move of KLM to keep its crew rotation stable and not delay KL872/02JAN as well. KLM could have moved the crew laying over in DEL to BOM and have the fly the aircraft, but chose not to do so. Therefore, the passengers should have gotten compensation as this was no longer a weather related delay.

Only flight cancellations do that (depending on the cause).

If you meant pax have to be taken care of with meals and hotels etc., that is indeed the case.
