Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Travel between AUK and PPT - oneway vs roundtrip?

I've found roundtrip tickets from Aukland, NZ to Papette, Tahiti for significantly cheaper prices than a one-way ticket, as is standard.

As my final destination after Papette is Buenos Aires, however, I'm wondering if it is advisable/possible to purchase a roundtrip ticket: AUK -PPT-AUK and just toss out the return?

Anyone who could advise me about whether I'd get reemed/ put on some terror list would be welcome!

It is not illegal to not use the return segment, but it is a breach of contract and most airlines include in the fine print their right to collect an additional fee from you. In practice such charge-backs are more common-place to travel agents than to individuals, but some airlines have done this in the past. Air NZ is one of the more aggressive airlines in enforcing fare rules (but I have never done this with NZ). I suppose you can avoid using a credit card and never fly that specific airline again (and paying in cash might affect your security profile, particularly as PPT is a hotbed of terrorists). Hard to assess the risk that the airline would in fact try to charge an additional fee, it is very small but non-zero.

I wouldn't worry at all. I've had a pile of NZ returns that I've thrown out.

Isn't there service from PPT to Chile via Easter Island, and would that be useful in your routing?
