I often rent at of airport(local)locations in other towns.
Can you save the outrageous taves and fees that are charged at LAS by doing this?

I've found that most of the time the money saved on taxes is added to the base rate and it ends up costing more to rent locally. The largest discounts tend to be available at the airport even with the exhorbitant taxes and fees. I usually price both options.

I have had the same experience, although there are exceptions. LAS airport rates are usually quite low for weekend and weekly rentals and Hertz almost always has discounts on their web site.

I have found the airport rates to be very competitive. For me, at least, it's not worth the hassle to go to those other locations.

I agree - my cousin looked into this and, yes, the rates were somewhat lower by renting a car away from the airport and The Strip - but when she did some calculations, she needed to pay for a taxi to go get the car, and would have had to spend more time to get to the car, and leave her hotel earlier to return it and decided the few bucks she was saving was not worth it in the long run.

If staying 5 days or more, then use an enterprise.com residential non-airport location, they will even come to your hotel and drive you to their depot.

I found out the hard way, never do a walk up reservation. They will charge you some sort of outrageous rental charge. Always make some sort of reservation before going to the rental counter...even if it on you cell phone in front of the bldg.

That's a definite. I get quite amazing rates when using various codes online such that many rentals get down to quite low rates compared to the "regular" rental fee. Even worse is when a major event is happening in Vegas and they're heavily booked on cars - then you're really going to have a hard time getting a good rate.

In general just get it from the airport, I asked once at the Wynn (Hertz) and they said they charge extra since they have to bring the cars from the airport.

As for walk up rates they're outrageous, though I know that Hertz have 3 different prices on the screen, the total donkey price, the discounted price, and the managers approval discount price. For good cars, a $50 in the hand works wonders....
