I have read several posts regarding this phone. Is this phone the same as the Cingular 8185 and the T-Mobile MDA? The keyboard has different buttons. I currently have the T-Mobile Dash and have a lot of trouble with the keys. Either too small or my thumbs are too big.
Any thoughts on the phone?

I believe that is the HTC name for the Cingular 8525 (not 8125). I have one of those and it is fantastic (I used to have the Seimens SX66). It was like night and day.

I confess to not knowing as much as I should about the Cingular offering, but based on past experience I have a couple of questions -- did Cingular cripple the wifi on their unit? what about the 3g, is it triband UMTS (850,1900,2100mhz)? How is Cingular about unlocking?

The TyTN is I believe two generations ahead of the TMobile MDA in terms of HTC products. Cingular sells a version of the TyTN but I believe it has had some Cingular specific modifications that are basically downgrades.

Here is the deal on HTC TyTN/Cingular 8525
The HTC TyTN is also known as a Herm200 which add a small camera on the front of the device for video conferencing and there is some variation on the button configuration also on the front of device.
The Cingular 8525 is also known as a Herm100 which removes the small camera on the front of the device and has a different button configuaration on the front of device to accommodate Cingular Logo Imprinting. The removal of the camera is simply because at this time Cingular does not support Videoconferencing and will not support this feature in the immediate future. The different button configuration on the front of device is as stated earlier to accommodate the imprinting of Cingula Logo.
Besides, that Cingular has made some software modifications to the WM5 software to enable and disable features that they do not want their end users to use.
However, all of these lockouts can be overridden as well as the Cingular branded software can be fully removed fairly easily.

Thanks for the replies! Can you buy it under the HTC label or do you have to buy it either under a O2 or Cingular brand?

You can buy it under the HTC label from many different places...including HTC's US Retailer http://www.htcphonestore.com, however it is not the cheapest place to buy it.

If I am not mistaken they are NOT "HTC's retailer", they are just another HTC dealer. Brightpoint has the distribution rights in the US.
"Mad Monkey Boy" is well known for his good service and prices:

I did not read their website carefully enough, it actually said that we are an exclusive HTC retailer and I took that to mean that they were the exclusive agent of HTC in the USA.....mea culpa.

They are great phones. Ive been using one since Sept, and I love it. Only thing I cant seem to figure out is sometimes mine freezes and I have to reset it. Other than that it works great on 3G, camera is good, etc.

I'm curious as to why did you not buy from Cingular. From what I hear, it is pretty much the same phone, and WiFi works on the Cingular version too, so why not just buy from them and get the discount from getting a new plan?

It is indeed "pretty much" the same phone, but there are some differences. For starters you miss the second camera, plus you get all the cingular crap they install, and then there are some issues people seem to be having with things like memory cards working right. I always prefer unbranded HTC phones over the stuff operators release.

If your device is buggy check out xda.developers.com and look into upgrading the firmware of the device.

I just dumped Cingular and went back to T-Mobile because of Cingular's customer service...oops...lack of customer service.

Thanks. I found it already. Looks like I got a old firmware. Ill have to update it when I get back to Europe.
For people who have the TyTN. What charger do you use? (other than the one it came with) will a V3 charger work? Or does the Cingular store have ones?
I just dumped Cingular and went back to T-Mobile because of Cingular's customer service...oops...lack of customer service. I feel the same way about their 'customer disservice', But T-Mobile doesn't have UMTS, so why bother with this phone with T-Mobile?

UMTS is cool, but it really doesn't help all that much on a PDA. The browsers on WM devices are so slow that it has a hard enough time keeping up with EDGE. I have a Cingular 3G sim, but usually just end up back with my Tmo sim instead.

Then I'm guessing WiFi is just as slow? UMTS and WiFi are really the two reasons why I wanted this phone.

Browsing and email are just as slow/fast. Multimedia applications like Sling and Resco Radio are of course much faster. There simply isn't a really effective browser for WM5.
WiFi isn't that much better. That said; the CPU is much faster than the older(Wizard) model so that did make browsing faster, but the carrier doesn't really improve it.

Is TMo UK UMTS faster than Cingular? It did seem faster there to me but I didnt really test it.

Now I'm wondering what is the point of getting a TyTN when there are other phones like the Dash, which to my eyes looks a bit better, or at least smaller.
Actually there might be a reason - I was thinking about the Cingular international data plan that costs around $130/month, IIRC. I was wondering if I got that plan, could I tether my laptop using the TyTN? Can anyone confirm that would work?

With Cingular/AT&T Wireless's laptop connect plan(domestic or international) one could tether their computer without issue. I have been doing that for some time and really enjoy the 3G service where available.

I've been looking at this for a bit now... the two major differences are that the Dash lacks a touch screen, and more importantly doesn't have 3G hardware support (Edge, but not 3G). The TyTN does 3G (although it's disabled by configuration if you purchase from T-Mobile). I was leaning to the Dash (based on size), but really want 3G. There are rumors of a new Treo 7xx (on howardforums) which might be the best of both worlds - I'm going to wait a couple of weeks and see if it is released as rumored (at CES I'd guess).
