Travel Technology - Aggravating Nokia N80ie purchase experience

I have a Nokia 6820 that I've had for a number of years. It has been a great phone, but is getting a bit worn. I decided to replace it this Holiday season, and after much thought, decided on an unlocked Nokia N80ie purchased directly from NokiaUSA.

I decided to stick with Nokia based on my very positive experience in dealing with the phone I have - very reliable unit, and very good synchronization software. I expect I'll be equally pleased with the new phone, should I decide to keep it. :(

However, purchasing the phone was a bit of a pain - not due to the Web site itself, which worked fine, but the 'identity verification' I had to put up with, after the fact. Here's a complaint note I penned:

I ordered a Nokia phone online last week. I received an email asking that I call to complete my order. This delayed my order from being fulfilled in a timely fashion, as you were closed when I received your email. When I called, I was first asked for identifying information (DOB, last 4 digits of SSN). However, this information was then used to 'mine' my credit report for more questions to ask me. In the process, I felt more than inconvenienced - I felt that my privacy was violated. I found the process to be humiliating. Never before, when ordering much more sizable purchases from other vendors, have I been subject to such an interrogation. When I spoke with a Supervisor (Patricia), she offered only to 'pass on my concern to her manager", to whom she was unable to connect me directly so I could voice my concern. She did promise that this Manager would call me - I seriously doubt it will happen. How nice that your fulfillment agents remain anonymous, and your managers uncontactable, while your customers, such as myself, have to be delayed and questioned like criminals in order to have the 'privilege' of doing business with you. I am outraged by this experience. I will never order anything from Nokia again online, and am considering refusing delivery of the order when it is finally shipped. Your company should be ashamed of its behavior - it is hard to believe you are a Finnish company, given Finland's track record in protecting consumer privacy. I cannot, at this time, recommend doing business with you, with this process in place - I would not want anyone else to suffer the indignities of doing 'business' with you.

As expected, I' ve not received the phone call I was promised. :td:

Sorry to hear about your experience. Hope you still would consider getting Nokia in the future. Some of their nseries phones are quite good. I wonder why they would do something like that - I bet they'll say "national security." PSH.

Glad that AT&T Wireless/Cingular still thinks that I have a Sony Ericsson T68i, even though I've changed phones some half dozen times since then.

Fortunately, there are plenty of places from which to purchase a Nokia (and at a better price as well) besides Nokia.

joe_s, since I see that you're located in Santa Monica, why not head over to the Nokia store in the Beverly Center. IIRC, they should have the N80ie there.

Great idea! I didn't even think about looking for a brick and mortar Nokia store. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that is just an "experience center" where all you can do is look at their phones. The only Nokia stores are in Chicago and New York.

There have to be 100's of online vendors that sell Nokia's, if Nokia themselves can't help you just use one of the reliable online stores like mobileplanet.

Is that what that place is? That seems like a silly idea to have a "demo" store with nothing to sell in one of the more expensive places around.

How weird!
