Not to miss places along Pacific coast of Mexico

I'm in Puerto Vallarta. I have a few months in Mexico, and I'd like to see as much of the best as I can. I'd like to stay close to the coast to start.

I would like to know which cities/towns are recommmend by travellers along the Pacific coast from PV heading south. Eventually, I'd like to turn inland and head to Mexico city before departing in the Yucatan/Cancun.

So this thread is about the Pacific coast. Which places should not be missed, and why?

Thanks

You'll find that PVR is one of, if not the best place along the Pacific side of Mexico.

When you begin to head over to CUN I would sugest you take the long route and pass through San Cristobal de las Casas in the rebelous state of Chiapas. This is a Mayan part of the country and you'll meet lot's of Mexicans who don't speak Spanish.

Have a great time in PVR!

Zipolite (Oax) near Puerto Angel is, uhm, "interesting". More of a liberal beach "town" in what otherwise is a pretty mainstream string of beach resorts. Puerto Escondido (Oax) is also more relaxed and low key. Acapulco (Gro) is a big polluted city, and Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa (Gro) is pretty touristy, but has its nice spots (and decent nightlife). I've also heard good things about Chacala (Nay), but that would be going a bit north from PVR.

Other than that there are miles and miles of deserted beaches. Note that there is guerrilla activity in Guerrero, and especially the border area between Gro and Oaxaca does not have a reputation for being particularly safe - that said though on the coast you should be fine.
