We'll be on a cruise in Jan. and one of the cities we visit is Christchurch. In searching for things to do in or around Christchurch for that one day (a Saturday), I noticed that this will be taking place. Has anyone experienced a World Buskers Festival? Is it worth a look or should we venture to an outlying area (i.e., crowds make Christchurch harder to maneuver)? Thanks for any opinions.

Its fun. If you're in the area you should try to see some performances. I don't think it will be too crowded (NZ has a low population and many locals are away on holiday in January).

Kiwi Flyer, thank you for your feedback. It will be a pleasure visiting places where we can enjoy things without having to deal with masses of people. So for the day we'll take a look at Christchurch--perhaps the botanical garden, Avon River, Canterbury Museum, farmers market,--in between the Buskers Festival--and, if time, the Antarctic Center. That should keep us busy!
I don't think you'll run into extreme crowds in New Zealand.. especially
the south island.
Its an amazing place. Enjoy!

Driving on the south island is awesome. Parts of the main highway has so little traffic that it seems deserted (about 1 car per hour). Christchurch is not like that, of course, but a big crowd there is a few thousand people. Very charming town. The Arts Centre is well worth a visit (realy great building and some high quality arts and crafts) http://www.artscentre.org.nz/
