When investigating some details for a Zoo visit, I found this offer, virtually a freebie but perhaps only useful if you have your birthday work-free.

CELBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY WITH US
As a special offer during our 90th year, you can visit the Zoo on your birthday for just 90 cents from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007 (http://www.zoo.nsw.gov.au/content/view.asp?id=1193). (T&Cs here (http://www.zootopia.com.au/content/view.asp?id=1190))

Here is the news page (http://www.zoo.nsw.gov.au/content/view.asp?id=21) (Feb 07 sunset concerts, new animals etc).

Plus the risk for some FTers that a trip to the zoo is ONE WAY ;)

Oh, I don't know. They've let me out every time I have gone. ;)

I love Taronga, but unfortunately, my birthday will conflict with something I have to be in the US for the following week. :(

It's a good time to visit the relatives again; a baby gorilla was born last weekend and is reported to be in public with his mother.

Sydney's Taronga Zoo is celebrating the arrival of its latest addition - a new baby gorilla.

The male western lowland gorilla was born between 3:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturday to parents Frala and Kibabu and goes on public display for the first time today.

If you want to see, get there very early or late in the day! ;)

Congrats to the proud parents!

We loved visiting the Taronga Zoo last March......and the gorilla exhibit is super: especially at feeding time!

Just to warn you - the 'gorilla lounge' room with the large window, that is adjacent to the outdoor living area is closed since the unnamed baby boy was born, so your views will be restricted to the (slightly more distant) outdoor area.

This is noted at the zoo's harbour entrance.

kaukau is right - get there for the feeding time (around 3PM).

It is after this time you will see everyone out and about, including Frala and her child.

We were 3-4 people deep, though, as everyone jostled for a camera position.

At other times you will be able to see the juveniles do their thing. They can be very playful not only with each other, but occasionally see some 'realatives' from the human side who they interact with. ^

(There are keeper talks and feedings especially 1.30-3.30PM, for reptiles, chimps, gorillas plus a morning and afternoon bird show).

To possibly maximise your ticket, wait for the seal/water show to open in 2008.

(If going on a Saturday, don't buy the SMH newspaper in the morning- get your free one at the zoo's info office. If you're in the city, buy your combined ferry/zoo ticket 'zoopass' on your credit card (AUD$88 for two adults) :))

Plus the risk for some FTers that a trip to the zoo is ONE WAY ;)This post reminded me that last time I was at the zoo we were so engrossed in watching the kangaroos that we didn't notice they had closed the zoo for the day. We almost got locked in!

Just don't run into one of them. They can kill a very big car.

Well... here in rural Virginia, USA we have herds of deer that do the same thing. :td: Funny you say that as I have a memory of a kangaroo bounding across the road north of Cairns. I never needed to slam on the brakes but it made me aware that there are probably many kangaroo killed by cars.

Wombats are in the southest corner area of the zoo, in a 'cave' and in the afternoon you may see one stirring a little. That's it!

Around 3.30PM there is a snake and spider show - essential if you want to be aware of 'what spider is that?' in the Sydney bush. :)

FYI the Zoo has a promotion to name the baby gorilla.
