Asia - Saigon: Anywhere to watch the Rose Bowl?

This may sound like a completely lame question... yes, my two friends and I are going to experience Saigon wholeheartedly. Unfortunately for us, we all graduated from USC, so we HAVE to watch the Rose Bowl (yes yes... the "consolation game")

Does anyone know a location that has satellite tv and would show a game like that?

I was at the Renaissance Saigon for last year's BCS championship game: my TV had it live. NFL playoffs were hit-miss. The Rose Bowl starts at 5 AM Saigon time, so I think a hotel room is your only option...unless of course you make friends with a local who has a satellite.

You're right, that is unfortunate.

M GO BLUE!

(At least it will be the best bowl game this season.)

When in Vietnam, do as the Vietnamese do....

Watch English Premier League Football (ie proper football)

That might be proper football/Soccer, but real football is played in the USA.

Mogambo's might have it on if they decide to open (American owned). Otherwise, your hotel room is the place. All 4 BCS Bowls were shown live in HCMC last year.

How about the Underground on Dong Khoi? Not sure of their hours though.

I believe they open at 8am, but you can always call to find out. They have a pretty decent breakfast there.

Not sure if this works anymore, but when I lived overseas I would contact the consulate/embassy, and someone there usually knew where to catch the major games, e.g. Rose, Super, etc. Worth a shot.

SLINGBOX!!!

Went through the same thing last year-hubby wanted to watch his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes in the Jan 2 Outback Bowl.

We were going to be in London. US Football, what's that???

Called all kinds of hotels, sports bars, etc., in the London area. No one was showing the game.

Someone at Best Buy told me to get Slingbox. Had to pay some computer geeky high schooler to set it up for me.

But hubby sat in the lobby of the Holiday Inn in Southampton, UK, watching the game on my laptop. He was a happy camper and we have traveled extensively this year. He sat in an internet cafe in Cusco Peru three weeks ago watching some football game and watched 3-4 Iowa basketball games from the rooftop of the Rex hotel in Saigon in 2006.

It takes a little setting up and someone to turn the TV on at home, but it truly works great.

When I was there in 1999 the lobby of the Rex Hotel had CNBC turned on late at night with couches for lounging. Not sure if their lobby has the same set up now. Since everyone will be exercising at that hour in the morning I bet you might have your pick of stations to watch.

Thanks greatam, I will research further, but Slingbox looks promising!

Check out the Travel Technology Forum. Lots of info on there about Slingbox and someone even posted that is was available for $108.00 (I paid $300 + cables last December).

It truly is a miracle technology and a real hoot to watch American TV shows in weird places in the world.

You don't need anyone at home to turn on the TV. It doesn't matter if it's on or not, the Slingbox works just fine. I download games onto my Ipod so I don't have to bring out the laptop to watch them when I'm traveling.

Slingbox should be you backup plan.
I've watched games from Japan, France, Ireland.

If you have a flakey connection you're SOL (Ireland)
If you have a solid but slow connection or one with latency you can't go full screen. (France)
If you're in Japan, it's like you're in your livingroom.

Makesure you get your slingbox connected to a DVR. Then you have access to all recordings and can even set up programming remotely.

Look for a real TV in Saigon to watch the game live. It will be better.
