MilesBuzz! - double miles for taxes paid with cc in 2007?

Double miles for taxes paid with CC, at least with some of the Chase ones, runs through 12/31/06. Has there been any announcement that this will be repeated in 2007? Months ago, a Chase rep said they were doing great business with this particular promo, so could expect it to be around in 2007 again, but that was no more than speculation. I would be greatly heartened to know that it will definitely be repeated, so paying taxes can be a more pleasant experience. (Unreasonable to hope that SPG AmEx might raise the cap on their double-miles-for-tax-payments from $5K and make it could throughout the year rather than just circa April 15th?)

im sure the usual suspects will pop up. Its a little early though now. Probably after new yrs we will start seeing them.

On the odd chance that the deal does not renew ~ consider making an 'estimated' advance payment.

If you guess low, at least you scored some more double miles ~ if they owe you, they mail a check ^

Would this apply to property taxes, or state taxes, or only IRS?

It's not only about RDM, it's also about the opportunity to go over $35K of spend with the UA Platinum Visa and get 5K of EQM for doing so. ($34,999 of spend with the CC in a calendar year = 0 EQM; $35,000 or more of spend = 5K of EQM). Pre-paying in 2006 would get the RDM, but not no EQM toward requalification in 2007.

best, applies to many, but not all, tax payments, including property and state ones in some jurisdictions. Good for those due IRS with standard forms (e.g., annual 1040 and quarterly estimates), but not all monies due IRS (e.g., estate taxes).

Doesn't the IRS charge a "service" fee for accepting credit cards?

The IRS just wants 100 cents for every dollar of tax obligation, no more and no less whether the taxpayer is paying IRS directly or indirectly through a company like Official Payments. It is the intermediary who imposes a 1.99 to 2.49% charge to cover their costs and earn a profit.

Definitely a good deal, though it will be a somewhat less good deal after SPG devalues the currency. Too bad, though, that they limited us to a max $5K payment, and only for 4/15 taxes. Maybe they will increase that max next year, or even uncap it completely.

Or maybe not offer it at all! :(

Not clear from what is there exactly how this works. I would assume that there is a 2.49% convenience fee and only 1 point earned per $1 charged. Does the up-to-$200 credit get applied against both the payment itself and the added "convenience fee," so that one might make a $200 payment to the IRS, incur a $4.98 "convenience fee, and only be responsible for $4.98 of the $204.98 total because AmEx will credit the account with an offsetting $200?

If that is the way it works, then one is being "gifted" $200 by AmEx and maybe 200 points, if the "credit" does not cancel those out. (What is the annual fee for the card? Is it around $200, so that the "credit" works much as a waiver of annual fee would?) If it isn't, then how does it work? (Interesting that the offer ends 2/28/07 rather than continuing through 4/15/07.)

If the credit card statement date is in January, then the payment should count toward the 2007 spending limit, even if the payment is made in 2006. Wait until after your December statement comes out, and you should be able to get both double RDM and count toward next year's limit.

This is what I've been told, and I think it happened that way for me last year--payments made in late December 2005 counted toward my $35k in 2006--but I can't guarantee it. I'm in the same position: I plan to wait until the latest possible date this month to see if the double RDM offer for taxes will be extended to next year.

You may or may not be right about charges in late December counting toward next year's cumulative spend, I simply don't know. I do know that I applied for a card toward the end of the year, intending to start using it in January so I could begin the new year with a 5K EQM sign-up bonus. I was surprised and chagrined to see that Chase credited the EQM to me not at the time of my first charges in January, but rather in December when they issued the card. I quickly canceled, then reapplied after another month, so I could get that EQM in the year desired, not earlier when it would have been completely useless to me.

First you apply for a new Amex Glod Biz card with the provided promo code 2TAX).

iirc, this card has NO annual fee the first year.

Next you use that card to make a tax payment online through Official Payments Corp during the stated time period.

fyi, presently the time period to make that payment is 11/1/2006 through 2/28/2007. (fwiw, this has been an ongoing promo and they've been extending the time period - 'cause i applied for my new card and used it in June, 2006 to make an estimated tax payment.)

iirc, I received the promised $200.00 credit on my first statement after that tax payment was made as directed.

Plus since tax payments are considered "purchases" you also accrue 200 MR points (plus bonuses if applicable)

As with any online tax payment, the "convenience fee" of 2.49% still stands.

This is just an $200 incentive to apply for a new Amex card and pay your taxes online using Official Payments Corp.

hope that is somewhat clearer.
