I am 19 and want to rent a car at LAX has anyone ever had any experience? There are a lot of companies that will rent but I am not sure which are reliable and have nice cars. I am fully insured through progressive.
Thanks in advance!

Most all car rental companies have a minimum age of 21 and drivers aged 21-24 typically pay a surcharge which can double the cost of the rental. The exception in age for the national companies is if you are working for the US government or US Military on work/traveling orders. There are also exceptions for the state of NY. I'm not aware of any other state that requires car rental companies to rent to young drivers.

If none of this applies to you, you need to find a local non-francised rental car company. Don't be surprised if you are required to pay a $50-$75 per day surcharge for being underage. Having proof of insurance and a certified driving record may also help convince a local company to rent to you.

If you find a place that will rent to you, please post it as I'm sure others may find the information useful.

I'm also curious how, at 19 years old, you have obtained status with so many companies. You have quite a few items listed in your profile.

After doing some research it seems there are a handful of companies that will rent under 21 as long as you have liability insurance. The company which I have a reservation for is http://www.atwestcarrental.com/

As to my profile I do a lot of traveling as I am a computer consultant although this trip is personal.

Atwest sounds like it will do the trick, but you may want to give them a call before you rent just to make sure you don't end up with any surprises at the rental counter... being 19, you won't have many options if they turn you away. Also make sure your Progressive policy will actually cover you. Some inurance policies only cover your rental if your primary car is in an "undriveable" condition. Be prepared to spend a lot of time at the rental counter - more than likely, Atwest will want to call Progressive to verify your coverage since they take a huge risk on under 25 drivers.

Do you happen to work for a large company? If so, it's possible they have corporate agreements setup with some of the major rental car companies that might waive the underage driver requirements.

I have called around some more and have switched over to http://www.la-rentacar.com/
as it is cheaper since they only charge $5 extra per day whereas Atwest charges $15. I do not work for a large company as I am self employed but I have tried every corporate contact including Amex, Visa and even a manager I know who is charge of Enterprise in Chicago. It seems I can get the 21-24 fee waived but no large rental company will rent if under 21 unless working for the U.S. Government on official orders.

Just an FYI most renters to 18-21 year olds will only rent to out of state drivers. Also for anyone looking for a rental being paid by insurance, Enterprise will rent you a car as long as you have a drivers license if the rental is being billed to insurance. I learned this a few weeks ago and it is very helpful!

My son has turned 25, so we're finally past these headaches. But for him, the major hurdle in renting a car as an under 25 year old was having a credit card with an acceptable (to the rental company) credit limit available. They always put a sizeable hold on his card until he returned the car.
