Background
For the previous 8 months I had been looking forward to an absolutely fantastic Star Alliance First Class award trip that, after a lot of tinkering, was my ideal itinerary. I was then made redundant a little more than three months before this trip. Fearing that my employment prospects may be somewhat restricted, as any new employer would need to allow me two weeks off over Easter to visit South Africa (BA Amex 2for1 award First out/Club return) and three weeks in February for this Bali trip, I decided to bring Bali forward. Right now I could also use a real holiday to relax, refresh the batteries and return to the UK with the energy and enthusiasm for a full-time job of job hunting!!!
I was made redundant on November 28th 2006, departing on 2nd December for a previously scheduled trip to Las Vegas and returning on 5th December. So I decided to reschedule Bali for departure around 6th December. Unfortunately, there was no first class availability of award redemptions on that date. The closest was in the evening on 5th December. I took it hoping that I would change dates if and when something more appropriate became available but ultimately prepared to arrive from SFO into LHR at 12:40 then depart at 22:15 for SIN. That is one of the great things about being a 1K with United – they do not charge you any award change fees despite cancelling an award, changing dates, airline, routes or class of service. With no first class availability on my preferred return dates I opted for an economy seat again hoping that something better would open up. Previously (and during the last couple of days before my departure) I had found that availability shown on the ANA tool was correct to what UA had available. This time was different. It is quite frustrating to see a first class seat on the flight where you are currently seated in economy and to be told that nothing is available. As my circumstance makes me rather flexible, I knew something would come through for me eventually. Luckily for me, upon arrival in Las Vegas and thanks to McCarran Airport’s free wifi, I used the ANA tool and found my preferred options. Using Skype I rang UA immediately and had my reservation changed to its final configuration:

As well as the onboard experience, I deliberately selected this itinerary (most notably the insertion of SIN-BKK-DPS rather than a straightforward SIN-DPS) for a couple of ground services that I was eager to experience: the Virgin Clubhouse at LHR and an overnight stay at the SKL F lounge in SIN.
Although I felt better than I normally do after flying SFO-LHR, upon arrival at LHR on 5th December, I was so glad that I could return home and spend the night with my wife. It turns out that my wife was rather pleased to see me too – perhaps it had something to do with the three 400g dark Toblerones that I bought for £2.50 (fantastic value - but that’s another story) and the lift home from work.
Check-in for SQ321 (LHR-SIN) and SQ62 (SIN-BKK)
After initial problems attempting to access online check-in at singaporeair.com, I managed to get there eventually. I was glad to see that it gave me the option of checking-in for both flights because I would need my onward boarding pass to access the SKL F lounge at SIN for an overnight stay and also meant that I could check my bags through to BKK. However, looking at the seat map for SQ321 I was surprised to see 1B available as I had been told only a few hours before that it had already been taken. What then confused me was that I could not then change seat to 1B as it said that it had a bassinet and was reserved for passengers with infants. This in itself I could understand but then how come that during my call to SQ to request my Book the Cook options and seat allocations I was given 1B for SQ320 (SIN-LHR)??? I shall ask at the airport later whether than can give me 1B. I was pleased to note that at check-in for SQ62 there were no other allocated seats! Perhaps there is a slight chance that I could be the only passenger in First for those lovely SQ girls to look after? Fingers crossed.
To be continued...

Boarding Pass collection and Baggage drop
A little under four hours before departure I walked straight passed the long economy check-in line and straight towards the desk that I had spotted as displaying the SQ First logo on my way through the terminal on Saturday for my trip to Las Vegas. The only problem was that this desk no longer displayed the F logo but that of Raffles. A lady manning the queue saw my surprise and asked me if I was travelling First, Raffles or economy. She pointed towards the sole F desk at the end of the cul-de-sac where nobody was waiting after hearing my response. I introduced myself to the girl on the desk and inquired if could grab seat 1B. She informed me that it was not allocated yet and then handed over a BP for 1B along with one for my connecting flight to BKK.
T3 Fast-Track security
The bad part was that the Fast-Track queue was as long as the normal line that I had used on my way to Vegas only four days earlier. It must have taken me about 10-15 minutes to get through the metal detector before encountering the chap who wanted to wipe his little stick all over my laptop. Rather unsurprising no trace of explosives was to be found. Of course, the good part was that the normal security line was massive and I was not part of it!!!!
Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse
I would just like thank jjpb3 for bring to my attention in this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=547676)in the SQ forum disclosing that SQ F and C passengers are entitled to use the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. I have been to some good airline lounges including SQ SKL F at SIN and the LH FCT at FRA as well as some rather shoddy lounges (mainly UA and US domestic clubs) but this place knocks the socks of off all the others. If anybody knows of a better airline lounge please do let me know!! Stylish, modern, plenty of space and fantastic staff. The ‘lounge dragon’ was anything but and did an excellent job of making me feel welcome.
After an initial familiarisation meander, I presented myself at the Cowshed (Virgin’s spa). I was able to make an appointment for a back massage an hour and a half later. The wait was one of the most enjoyable I have yet to endure! Firstly, I was led to my seat to dine in the restaurant which had the following menu:
A la carte

As I did not want to ruin my appetite (despite being pretty hungry considering that by this time all that I had ate all day were two slices of toast), I opted for the pasta tagliatelle and followed that with the fresh fruit salad. I really enjoyed the fresh fruit salad - I just can not get enough passion fruit and the red berry sorbet was fantasic. My meal was accompanied by a single glass of chardonnay and two small bottles of water.
After dining I took a walk up the stairs into the Skylounge and on to the Garden. The view was quite good of the T3 gate area from the terrace but the cool chill quickly encouraged me to return indoors. I settled into the business centre to utilise the telephone. I am not sure exactly how far Virgin’s generosity extends with regards to free phone calls but it would seem that UK calls are acceptable. I spoke with Mrs TEX277 for twenty-odd minutes before leaving her for the Cowshed. As I approached the desk, a lady looked at me and asked “Mr TEX277?” She then led me into the massage area, got me into position and began to work her magic. I am unsure as to how I would rate the VS spa experience. The drawbacks were that the area in which you receive your massage is not private. You can hear the other spa employees chatting amongst other background noise. As it was not private, I remained fully clothed and the lady massaged me through my shirt obviously without any oils. On the positive side, the female masseur was considerably more attractive than the chap at the TG F lounge in the old BKK airport and also the female Hungarian Hammer-thrower with a moustache  that gave me a beating (she called it a massage) in T1 BA Terraces last year. The massage lasted around 10-15 minutes and afterwards I sat in the bar area and another lady took my drink order. To be honest, service here was a little slow and I’d recommend sitting at the bar itself for a speedier service. Anyway, the champagne (Mumm) arrived and I dutifully drank away. I returned to the business centre and continued my phone call to my wife while we both watched Arsenal in their Champions League match against Porto (she’s a Gooner!). Once finished, I took several photos of the lounge and proceeded to the SQ F lounge.
Singapore Airlines First Class lounge
Oh my God! What a disappointment! It was like walking into a United Red Capet Club that served a small variety of hot food and served Moet Champagne. The seats were virtually identical as I remember those in the RCC to be. But they did have some nicely embossed envelopes and headed paper that may have rather mysteriously found their own way into to my hand baggage. I am not sure how that happened but that is all in the past now! I ordered and drank a glass of Moet and thanked my lucky stars that I spent 3 hours in the VS lounge and just 30 minutes in this one. If I’d have done it the other way around I probably would have shot myself when I eventually entered the VS CH!
Upon arrival at Gate 18 the vast majority of passengers were already onboard and I walked directly into the First Class section to be grated by a male FA. He welcomed me onboard and showed me to my seat. After accepting a pre-departure glass of Krug, I received my PJs and settled into 1B. I know that some do not like 1B but I think it is great. It is just so private and you are oblivious to the rest of the passengers and movement within the cabin. Another benefit is that I do not have to see everybody else being served their drinks and meal before I receive mine. As far as I can tell I am always the first to be served! Meal service began approximately 45 minutes into the flight and finished around an hour later.
Back to the food - I had opted for the BTC Lobster Thermidor and, like the rest of the menu, thoroughly enjoyed it. The menu read:

Once the food service had finished I headed for the lavatories and changed into my old SQ F PJs that I had brought with me. I shall be keeping the new ones unopened until I return to the UK and am hoping that a kind FA will give me an extra pair for Mrs TEX277.
After changing I returned to my seat, copied out the menus and slept. Unfortunately, Connexion was not operative on this flight preventing me from making a live update. I awoke once during the night and upon exiting the lavatories saw one of the FAs in the galley. I very polite inquired if there was a spare medium size PJ set as my wife would love one too. He did say that everything had to be accounted for but he’d see what he could do. I thanked him, admitted I was being just a little cheeky by asking anyway and that I understand should it not be possible. A few minutes later his colleague delivered one to my seat and I thanked her profusely.
Overnight snacks were made available with the menu listing:
Snack Menu
Noodles
Fish ball broth with kway teow or bee hoon noodles
Vegetarian and non-vegetarian instant noodles
Sandwiches
Chicken Caesar sandwich
Roasted vegetables sandwich
Snacks
Cashew, almond or macadamia nuts
Chocolate bar
Cheese and black pepper snack
A selection from the fruit basket
Assorted Walkers biscuits
To be honest that was about it for this flight. I am usually a poor sleeper onboard but managed to get around 8 hours of sleep and feel fantastic on arrival for it. I was not hungry either so I turned down the breakfast offerings and opted for a glass of orange juice instead. The breakfast menu read:
Before touchdown from London to Singapore
Juices
A choice of apple, tomato and freshly squeezed orange
Fruit
Fresh fruit plate
Light starters
Choice of cereals or yoghurt
Cornflakes with milk or Birchermuesli
Plain or fruit yoghurt
Wholesome beginnings

Sliced salmon and shredded dried scallop in rice porridge with deep fried Chinese cruellers
Ham steak with warm salad of potato, mushrooms, tomato and bacon

Baked, boiled or crambled
From the bakery
Assorted breakfast rolls
Butter, jam, marmalade or honey
Hot beverages
Freshly brewed coffee
Espresso or cappuccino
Selection of tea
We landed around 10 minutes earlier than scheduled and I again thanked the crew for their help with the PJs upon exiting the aircraft.

I could not agree with you more about the great clubhouse in LHR. I was blown away by the food selections. I had just as good ( if not better ) experience than the WING at HKG. The all day deli is great and the Eggs Benedict were superb...

Sleepover at the SQ SKL F
Returning to the airport after a couple of hours walking around the city, I realised that I was not built for such climates. Upon admission to the lounge I headed straight for the showers. One was free so I walked straight in and had an extremely cold shower. After drying myself off and changing clothes I sat in the lounge for an hours or so and had a bit to eat accommpanied by a glass of champagne that I had to request from a member of the waiting staff as the bar had just closed. I utilised the free wifi service in the lounge (rather slow 11mbps) to browse the internet and catch up on my emails.
Around 00:30 I decided to retire to the slumberette rooms. Room II was the last available and I took it. The chair is quite comfy but I opted for the flat bed (ie floor)! I removed the cushioning from the chair, grabbed a couple of pillows and blankets and I was away for the night.
Unfortunately, I did not sleep too well. I think I only managed around 5 hours of interrupted. The rooms have a glass door that allows light in from the communal area, other passengers seeking a room are regularly peering in to determine whether the room is occupied which removes any idea of privacy. Noise is also an issue as it seems to travel through the walls with remarkable ease. I could hear the person next door snoring like he was in the room with me.
Improvements that I believe could be made to the slumberette rooms would include:
1) A real door with an occupied sign on the exterior to provide privacy and make it easier for people to locate available rooms
2) Improved soundproofing - Not sure why I get not get my Bose QCIIs out to solve some of the problem
3) Am I the only one to get really thristy overnight? Some sort of water fountain or mini-bar (soft drinks only would be good enough) would have been great.
At 7:30 I left the slumberette and get to have a shower. Unfortunately, not only were they all occupied but there were a couple of people already waiting. I just used a changing room instead to get dressed and decided to skip the shower as I had one late the night before anyway.
Personally, if I was to make this trip again I would definately pay for a proper hotel. I am glad to have sampled on overnight stay in a First class lounge but once is enough.

SQ62 SIN-BKK 8th December
Feeling a little worse for wear, to took a slow walk down to gate F56. The vast majority of the other passengers were already there waiting to be called for boarding. I somehow managed to find a spare seat and rested for a couple of minutes after taking a photo if the aircraft (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc080044.html).
Before the end of an announcement saying something along the lines of 'We shall soon begin preboarding' the race was on, as a sizeable group walked towards the aircraft. As there was nobody there to check BPs, more people followed. I gave them a couple of minutes headstart before boarding myself. I was greeted upon boarding and shown to my seat 1A. The rest of the cabin was empty and I began to think that I would be the only passenger in F. This did not last too long as several people took their seats in the F cabin. With only 15 minutes left until the scheduled departure, the seat next to me was free. Great I thought - until the final F passenger entered the cabin and occupied it. Having a quick look around the cabin I realised that the cabin was entirelly full.
We ended up pushing back around 15 minutes late and were informed on our taxi to the runway that as the other runway was closed, all arriving and departing aircraft had to use the same runway. This obviously led to a queue of aircraft awaiting take-off (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc080049.html)and further delayed our departure. I had a look at the other runway as we were climbing out and did see several yellow vehicles located half way down there runway.
After we were given the menu, the SQ girl confirmed that I had ordered the BTC roast rack of lamb. To be honest, I was beginning to feel worse and genuinely considered turning all food away. However, I attempted to eat the lamb but only managed to eat about a third of it before retiring. I had skipped the starter and also the fresh fruit salad but successfully polished off numerous glasses of iced water.
The menu read:
Light meal from Singapore to Bangkok
Appertisers
Tian of crabmeat with corn kernels and sundried tomato
Corn nage with olive oil and aged balsamico
Main Courses
Kingfish with white beans, tomato and bacon salad, boiled potato, hazelnut dressing
Pha naeng moo
Pork in peanut red curry served with brinjal and dried shrimp salad, steamed rice
Pan fried beef tournedos in shallot sauce with sauteed spinach, baby carrots and mushrooms-risotto
Fresh fruit
A selection of fresh fruit
From the bakery
Oven fresh rolls
with a choice of extra virgin olive oil or butter
Garlic bread
Hot beverages
Freshly brewed coffee
Espresso or cappuccino
Selection of tea
Realising that I had bearly touched my BTC the stewardess asked if it was not to my liking. I assured her that it was fine but I just did not feel hungry.
BKK Arrival formalities
Upon arrival at BKK we followed a Philippine A330/A340 (can't remember which exactly now) and I hoped that our flight made it to immigration before theirs did. I had little to worry about though as they parked at a gate at the end of one of the concourse whereas we parked right at the main terminal building. After clearing immigration, waiting for the three most constipated people in all of Thailand to vacate the lavatories, I headed for the baggage belt. I had foolishly expected great things from a new airport - like the quick delivery of baggage. No I was wrong. This airport made Heathrow's archaic baggage system seem efficient. I wish I had noted the time from landing to the first bag coming out. To make matters worse, when the bags did finally arrive, despite mine being tagged as F priority - I did note an awful lot of non-priority bags making it out ahead.

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers
Once through customs at BKK, I found the hotel representive and introduced myself as I had prebooked a limo transfer. She led me over towards the exit where we waited a couple of minutes until the limo was ready.
I was so glad that I had booked this service (2200 THB) as I snoozed in the rear seat as the driver sped me to the hotel. I am not sure what the speed limits are on the roads upon which we travelled but I dare say we were exceeding them. I was thankful for his enthusiasm, as I was still feeling rather unwell and just wanted to lay down for a while on a comfy bed.
Forgetting that the Towers reception in the hotel was on floor 26, I attempted to check-in at the regular reception desk in the lobby. Upon realising my mistake the chap made a quick phone call and then led me up to the Towers check-in. A cold towel and a cool glass of tangerine juice awaited me whilst they processed my arrival. The towers receptionist then led me to my room and explained the benefits of the tower facilities. To be honest, I was not really listening as I had spotted the bed and was just thinking that as soon as this guys leaves I'll be on that immediately.
He left the room and luckily my baggage arrived before I had time to lay down. However, when that was done and dusted, I laid down for a quick snooze. Five hours later I awoke :o . I had one of those strange awakenings. You know? The ones where for around the first 20 seconds of consciousness, you just do not remember where you are or how you got there!!! When this had subsided I realised that I had just missed the complimentary hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the lounge. I rolled over and got another three hours sleep before spending some time using skype to call the wife back home. I then fell asleep again at around 3am before awaking and kicking off my day with the complimentary continental breakfast.
For those that are interested, I am staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton for two nights paid for with points (2 x 3000) and upgraded in advance to the Towers for $40 pn. The points used for the stay are part of the prize (20000 spg points) that I won at the London Do for coming second in guessing how many miles the hosts and Randy had in their accounts. My thanks to the organisers and especially to SPG for donating such a great prize! ^ ^ ^
I am planning on lazing by the pool for most of the day, before taking advantage of a free 15 minute tension relief massage at the hotel's spa. Tonight I am scheduled to meet Schoflyer, KenF and Willard for a couple of drinks at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.

Mini-FT do at the SGS BKK
I had a very enjoyable evening in the company of schoflyer, KenF, Willard and Seattle1K. Seattle1K was not scheduled to attend but by chance was sitting next to us in the pool area and upon overhearing our conversations inquired if we had heard of FT! He was cordially invited to join in and we all spent the evening drinking and talking travel.
Highlights included KenF attempted to convert schoflyer into crediting all of his flights into bmi whilst attempting from memory (and rather poor math) to determine the one-way business class and first class cash&miles redemption levels between various zones; Seattle1K's extremely conclusive insurance policy that seems to cover all sorts of eventualities accompanied by some entertaining stories and finally getting my hands on a UGS card. Okay, it was not mine but still ^
We managed to press-gang a SGS employee into capturing us upon camera immediately before we departed the SGS (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc090050.html). The photo would be up on the site by now had I not packed my USB cable for the camera into my hold luggage.
As I had been unwell the previous day I decided to return to my hotel at 10pm allowing the to continue the party in the city into the night (and morning??). I wonder how they are feeling right now? Especially Schoflyer who had an early flight too! Thanks for a enjoyable evening with new friends in an unfamiliar city.
BKK Check-in for TG431
The Royal Silk check-in area is very nice. There are several sofas (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc100055.html)positioned to make nice sitting areas along the sidewall, whilst the check-in desks themselves not only look great, are staffed by very friendly and professional staff but also have a seat for you to sit on which they perform their duties.
BKK Departure Immigration
Okay, this is were I demonstrate that I can laugh and ridicule myself as good as anybody! I am soo stupid sometimes and I proved it here infront a (thankfully) rather small queue! I had been through BKK already once this year. I filled in the arrival and departure side of the immigration to get through. Upon arrival, I filled in the arrival side of the form and noted that the reverse side was for departure and needed to be completed before I got airside. Do you think I remembered to fill it or just hung my head in shame as the female immigration officer returned my form and said 'Fill in form first!!'?? Thankfully, as I moved over to complete my form, the behind me in the queue was called forward and she immediately noticed that he'd made the same mistake. That certainly made me feel a little better but the guy waiting behind him must have been like    !
BKK Departure lounge
Nice and roomy (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc100057.html)but just can't get away from that BAA feel about the place. Is this an airport or shopping mall??? I know which it looks like to me but I can see signs pointing to gates where perhaps aircraft are parked:confused:
TG Royal Silk Lounge
I am currently making great use of the free wifi available. I certainly makes up for the time I spent wandering around the lounge attempting to find a seat upon arrival at 07:00. However, it is now 07:47 and there are plenty of free seats around.
Nice written report! ^ I agree with assesment of the slumber room. For a couple hours of napping in between flight, it is a great place for resting. But for overnighting, I'd recommend a hotel's room instead. The wave shaped bed is not going to get you a good night's rest. I've tried it once in June and will never resort to it again for a night's accommodation. Having my body being bent on a curve for an extended number of hours is rather uncomfortable and awkward.
Was SQ321 the only flight available when you booked your award? Personally I have always prefered SQ319 for LHR-SIN. Meals are more comprehensive and the early SIN arrival works very well to my sleeping patter. And with a 2pm-ish arrival, you would have had more time to see the city.
Even though it is SQ321 that would connect immediately SQ285 to AKL, I have always chosen SQ319 to connect to SQ285 as the 7 hour layover in SIN gave me plenty of time to break in between flights, get something to eat inside the SKL and take a rest at the transit hotel before continuing. Personal preference, but it does wonders for my body. ;)

It's nice to read what great use you're getting from your win. ^^

Many thanks to you all for your kind words.
Was SQ321 the only flight available when you booked your award? Personally I have always prefered SQ319 for LHR-SIN.
SQ321 was always my preference as it gave me just the evening in SIN before a relatively early departure for BKK the next day and there is just something about late night departures from LHR! I think that is because when I go on my 'usual' short holiday trips to the US the flights leave no later than 2pm. Everytime that I fly out of LHR late I am going somewhere 'different' like Hong Kong or Australia.
SQ321 was the first of the three flights on my preferred departure date to open up a First award seat. I believe that I later saw SQ319 as available but stuck with SQ321.

TG 431 BKK-DPS
We boarded from a remote stand that although inconvenient did allow for a close quarters photo of the aircraft (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc100066.html). I was pleased to discover that the business cabin (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc100068.html)was relatively empty on this flight with only around 40% of seats taken. This was nice especially after the first cabin on the previous two SQ flights had a combined total of one spare seat!!! A choice of OJ, water or Champagne was offered as a preflight drink.
I was pleasantly surprised by the cabin in this TG A300-600! Although the seats did look a little old (with the old style dial to change audio channel and volume!!) the cabin was well maintained. There was no pen marks and signs of wear and tear like I usually find on US domestics.
The FAs through themselves into the drinks and meal service immediately as the fasten seatbelt sign went off. Their enthusiasm to serve us with food was fantastic and I only wished that I had them on some of my other short flight ie. LGW-CDG, LAX-LAS. The strange thing was that this was not a short flight - it was scheduled for over 4 hours! I later realised that this enthuasiasm enabled them to take the aft business cabin to a 'little' rest once the meal service was completed. I was quite surprised to find that they all retired without even leaving us with drinks.

I did notice on the flight that the seat pitch did cause problems. Although it was spacious enough for comfortable travel without being excessive, with the passenger in front fully reclined the lady opposite was physically unable to get her tray table out for the meal service. Rather unfortunately the passenger in front was fairly indignant with the FA when she explained the problem and asked him if he'd kindly raise his seat for the meal service.
Arrival at DPS
I know that they are on a different scale to each other but DPS proved that, unlike BKK, airports can be quick and easy to exit. From stepping off the aircraft, walking to immigration, purchasing and processing my visa on arrival ($25 for upto 30 days), having my handbaggage scanned, collecting my two pieces of luggage, having a chat with a customs officer about a query with the declarations, clearing customs and finally changing some money took my all of 20 minutes^
Sanur Beach Hotel
I suppose that the purpose of this trip, as well as wanting a proper beach holiday, was to revisit a hotel where my travel bug first began on my first ever overseas trip at the age of 8. Now, 22 years later I find myself at the same Sanur Beach Hotel where I had a stopover with my uncle and grandad on our way to Australia in 1984. The hotel itself is certainly nothing too special but the grounds, and its sentimental value, certainly make up for that. There are two swimming pools and of course the beach is just the other side of the footpath. I booked with the hotel directly on the internet for a seven night stay all-inclusive for $73 per night. I am here (with slow internet access and no ability to update the photos until I get back to SIN) until the 17th and will enjoy my time here by the pools and beach.
I arrived at the airport in a taxi from my hotel. The driver was very friendly and gave me his card and said that if I return any time soon to give him a ring beforehand and he will collect me from the airport for only 75000 Rupiah instead of the usual 85000. I thanked him, took his card whilst calculating that whilst the proposed offer would save me around £0.6 it would cost me either the equivalent in postage or the telephone call! The gesture was appreciated though and I kept his card.
Check-in for SQ143 DPS-SIN
Despite small signs and a very crowded exterior, the airport was quite easy to navigate. It was good to see that only passengers are allowed into the terminal. Having shown the security officer my e-ticket (I am glad I printed it out!!) and after me and my entire luggage being x-rayed, I was allowed into the check-in area. Inside the terminal there was a sense of calm and tranquillity that was absent outside. I quickly found the check-in desk and was pleased to find that although all of the agents were busy with passengers, there was no queue. After being called to the desk and handing my passport over, the agent confirmed that I was travelling home to London. I said I was but I needed my luggage back for the overnight in Singapore (a proper hotel this time with a real comfy bed (courtesy again of the SPG points won at the London Do along with just $45 – I am not doing a SKL F lounge sleepover ever again!) and would be grateful if she would only check me in for the DPS-SIN segment. She printed my baggage stickers out, confirmed my pre-reserved seat (12K) and pulled out two F priority luggage tags for my bags. I was actually very impressed by this as the aircraft was only a two class configuration I expected her to pluck two tags from the mountain of Raffles tags in front of her. She had evidently noted that I was on a First ticket and acted accordingly. Nice touch! I took my BP and lounge invite, thanked her and went upstairs to the pay my Passenger Service Charge of 100000 Rupiah.
Immigration
Next was the Immigration desk that immediately brought back the recollection of my BKK faux pas. This time though I was prepared. Fearing another idiotic oversight I took the opportunity on the BKK-DPS flight (whilst the embarrassment was still fresh) to complete both the arrival and departure cards for Indonesia! The lady in front of me in the queue had obviously not been reading my trip report on FT and decided to provide me with a wry smirk by presenting an incomplete departure card to the official. She and her travel companion in the adjacent queue were asked to move aside whilst they fill in the necessary details so that the queue could keep moving. I approached the desk and handed my documents over. The official processed them before returning them to me. I picked them up and, just before I walked away, heard one of the ladies asking the other “What’s our immediate destination?” Perhaps I am not so bad after all?!
Premier Lounge
After a quick walk around the Duty Free shops (200 Marlboros for $13 seemed good!) I followed the signs to the Premier Lounge (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170027.html) and turned in my invitation. Although the lounge did offer wireless internet access, to which I successfully connected, I just could not get any website to download. I gave up and took the opportunity to catch up writing my trip report into Word. The lounge itself is quite nice (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170020.html). Numerous airlines share the lounge but it has enough room to accommodate everybody without a crowded feel and plenty more space and seating available. It has a selection of food (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170026.html) including chocolate éclairs (that I managed to resist) and a nice outdoor patio area (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170024.html)with four small tables and around each table are four chairs. Both the patio and the main lounge have views out to sea and of the end of the runway (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170022.html).
SQ143 DPS-SIN
Thanks to the priority boarding line, I slipped past the masses and walked straight onto the aircraft. Every other seat in business was occupied as I took my seat. The predeparture drink was noticeable by its absence. My seatmate collared a passing member of cabin crew and asked for a drink. Only one FA was conducting the predeparture drinks service for the entire cabin and, after distributing drinks on the opposite aisle, he walked through the galley and appeared in front of me and offered a drink. The tray he was carrying now only held several glasses of orange juice. I asked for a glass of Champagne and was told "I am sorry Sir, we have ran out of Champagne!". The two seconds in which that statement left me speechless allowed my seatmate to jump straight in - "We have not yet even had a single predeparture drink and you are telling us that you are out of Champagne???" The FA said he'd have a look and see what he could find. He returned a couple of minutes later with a tray full of Champagne glasses. Out of Champagne?! Looks like he was just too lazy to open another bottle and pour some drinks! Poor service!
That opened up conversation between myself and my seatmate and I am glad to say that we chatted for most of the flight. We were interrupted by the meal service and tucked in. After finishing my salad and main course, I noticed a small plate on the lower left of my tray just behind a small bowl containing some butter. I wonder what they were for with the absence of bread? I was not until after I and everybody else in the cabin had polished off dessert that the FA approached with a bread basket. The FA was the same guy who had informed us (lied to us) of the absence of Champagne. He made the same mistake again and approached us firsts. My seatmate expressed a dissatisfaction with the timing of the bread offering and let it be known that he was not happy with the service provided on this flight. The FA received several more similar comments from other passengers before retreating to the safety of the galley. Personally of all of the flights on this trip, I found this one to be worsed. I was expecting the TG A300 to be a horrid experience but that came out ahead of the poor service that we all received on this SQ flight. To be fair with the FAs the cabin was full and it did seem that they were a crew member light. But my seatmate informed me that he had been noticing the SQ slip on this particular route for a while.
Due to the conversation with my seatmate, time flew past and I realised that we were starting our descent and I had yet to complete my immigration card . Again SIN was operating on only one runway which led to a further 15 minute delay (we were 30 minutes late leaving DPS due to the late arrival of the inbound flight). The approach had was not eventless. We hit some clouds and turbulance ensued. I was aware of some lightening in the area but then I looked out of my window just in time to see a bolt of lightening as close as I ever seen in my life. It was followed a nanosecond later by a crack of thunder. That was close!
As the crew did not retreive the menus on this flight, I took the opportunity of allowing one to walk into my carry-on. Apologies to whomever was seated in 12K for the return flight to DPS (SQ146) on 17th December. I have your menu:o
Lunch Menu
A Savoury Note
Marinated prawns and julienne of vegetables with basil tomato dressing
The Main Event
Salmon fillet with crushed green peas and pea veloute, carrot and new potatoes
Indonesian lamb curry with spicy vegetables and steamed rice
Stirfried sliced beef in ginger oyster sauce with seasonal vegetables and steamed rice
A Sweet Note
Coconut creme brulee with peach

Gourmet coffee

SIN arrival
I think we have a winner!! From touchdown, through taxi, parking, disembarkation, the walk from gate F58 to immigration, being processed at immigration, changing a few £s into S$, collecting my two checked-in bags, clearing customs, right up until the taxi door closing after I got in - 22 minutes! ^ ^ ^
Sheraton Towers Singapore
The taxi from SIN to the hotel cost S$18 and took us through a torrential downpour. Check-in was quick and the agent confirmed my cash and points redemption. 2800 points along with US$45 converting to around S$65. I was allocated room 1603 on the northern Scotts Road facing corner. After setting up my laptop my luggage arrived. I accessed the hotel's hi-speed internet access (S$29 for 24 hours) and rang my wife using skype. Despite it being 09:30 back in the UK, my wife was still in bed and missed my first call. A second call placed immediately after leaving a quick 'get of of bed, lazy' message was answered and we chatted for a couple of hours.
The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel (finally!)
This was the fifth time that I have spent at least one night in Singapore this year. The one thing that I really wanted to do was to enjoy a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar inside the Raffles Hotel but on none of my previous four visits had we/I managed to get around to doing it. With some encouragement from my wife, after hanging up I headed out bound for Raffles. The hotel door opened and I was immediately greeted by the sound and sight of rainfall that you just do not see (often) in the UK. Waiting a few minutes allowed for a lull in the rainfall and I darted out for the MRT station a couple of doors down the road.
I stopped off at the food court directly opposite Somerset MRT on Orchard Road for a quick bit to eat. S$7.5 got me a bowl of soup and rice along with a plate of sizzlingly hot fried lamb and a Sprite.
The Long Bar (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170034.html)is located on the first floor (by UK defintion) and the first thing that you notice even before entering are the discarded nut shells (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170033.html)on the floor outside the bar. I took a seat at a table inside, ordered my Singapore Sling and set about tackling the mountain of nuts on the table. The bar was fairly busy but seating was available. Obviously, everybody else was part of a group and as a lone solo drinker I became just a little conscious. That quickly disappeared when I realised that most of the others in there were also first timers and I noticed frequent flashes from cameras as people posed with their drinks. Upon delivery of my second Sling, I asked the waitress if she'd mind taking my photo (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc170032.html).
Once my final drink was completed, I asked for my bill and presented my DPS-SIN BP stub that entitled me to a discount thanks to SQ's 'Boarding Pass Privileges' scheme. The bill came to S$35 (S$5 discount).

Check-in for SQ320 SIN-LHR 18th December 2006
After a quick taxi ride to the airport (S$15), I was greeted by a porter at the First Class drop-off area of SIN T2. I think he asked if I was travelling in First once more than I'd have liked but loaded my bags and escorted me to the SQ First check-in lounge. Check-in was handled quickly and efficiently and soon on my way through immigration with my BP for 1B.
SIN Departure Lounge
The check-in agent had warned me that the gate (E28) was a long walk. I decided that I'd take a walk to the gate, have a look at the aircraft before entering the SQ SKL F lounge and searching FT to see if the aircraft had Connexion working. Walking was a big mistake for this gate was the last in T2 and jumping on the transit train to T1 and walking back would have been far quicker!!
However, just as I was approaching gate E28 I noticed a group of SQ girls walking towards me:D . One of their male colleagues made eye contact and asked if I was travelling on SQ320 to London. He informed me that the gate had been changed and that we were now scheduled to depart from gate E4. So I began to walk back towards E4 with them a few other passengers. It was great to see this guy approaching every passenger walking in the opposite direction if they were on SQ320. He must have saved 10-15 people an unnecessary long walk as the gate change at this time had not been made public.
Upon arrival at the gate area (which was not yet open) I took the opportunity to thank the FA for his consideration and went on to have a quick chat with him. An announcement was made about the change of gates and was soon followed by another stating that due to the late arrival of the inbound aircraft departure would be delayed by 40 minutes.
Making a friend out of a stranger
I took the prompt to seek out any other solo travellers. As the originally scheduled departure was still 1 hour away (and most passengers had not had time to get to the new gate) there were only a small group of people in the gate area. But I did spot us one person by themselves. I approached him and asked if he was travelling by himself. He was. I then told him that I am allowed one guest into the SKL F lounge and would he care to join me for a glass or two of Champagne. He took me up on the offer with very little thought. The offer did raise an eyebrow of these sitting near him. I hope it was a 'oh, Champagne in the F lounge - how nice!' rather than a 'that guy's trying to pull this poor chap!'. To be honest this is only the second time that I have approached a stranger and invited them to join me in the lounge. The other time was with a female in SYD last year. Luckily for me, she too jumped at the opportunity. And neither of them seemed under the impression that I was on the pull. The first time I get a dirty look and told to 'go away' will be the last time that I ever offer!
The guy was called Ray and was on his way home to Canada. We spent around an hour in the SKL F lounge drinking Champagne and chatting away. He was into the miles game but had not heard of FT. We headed back to the gate around 30 minutes before the delayed departure. Placing my close to legal limit carry-on onto the xray belt, the security officer asked if I my bag contain a laptop. I confirmed that it was. He turned to me and asked 'Just one???' I laughed and agreed just the one but a lot of other crap too. He smiled and waved me through.
In the gate area I asked Ray if he had a good economy seat. He had 44H (IIRC) and I offered to ask the GA if any bulkhead or exit row seats were available. After finding out and confirming with Ray, she altered his seat assignment to the bulkhead 32H. We preboarded together and said goodbye and shook hands at the entrance to the premium cabins jetbridge. He thanked me for the drinks, conversation and improved seating and I thanked him for his company.
SQ320 SIN-LHR
I was greeted and shown to my seat (1B). I was pleased to note that the cabin was only half full. Six F passengers and three F crew looked like a nice ratio for some good service. After introducing herself my SQ girl and I had a quick chat about my trip and the journey home. She inquired as to what I would like to drink predeparture and I asked for a (another) glass of Champagne. I took her up on the offer of Krug over the Dom as I had OD'ed on that on the outbound. I pushed my luck a little and explained that I had a friend seated in 32H back in economy and would be most appreciative if she could arrange a glass of Champagne for him too. She confirm the seat number and his name and promised me that she would sort that out. Around 10 minutes later one of her colleagues approached me to confirm its delivery. I thanked them both for going above and beyond the call of duty and expressed my heart felt thanks. My glass was topped up and I enjoyed sipping on it until it was empty again. The SQ girl reapproached my with the bottle of Krug and offered yet another top up. I accepted (rude not to right?) but asked for just half a glass.
Both runways were open this time and we made a speedy departure. Unfortunately, we experienced some light turbulence. Usually this would have been no issue whatsoever. As we climbed with the seatbelt sign still illuminated I could feel my bladder struggling to cope with the influx of Champagne that I had consumed. The fact that I had yet to eat anything at all that day (and it was now 13:30) certainly did not help. Eventually, I just could not take it and asked the SQ girl as she accessed the closet that I know that the sign was still illuminated but I was desperate for the lavatory. She said okay but just be really careful. I was and very grateful for the relief.
The meal service was just fantastic. I informed the SQ girl of my meal preferences to accompany my BTC Lobster Thermidor (http://public.fotki.com/TEX277/bali-trip/pc180005.html) but had noted that there was an alternative Indian menu. I asked rather cheekily if I could have the papadum and chutneys from that menu with my meal. She said it was no problem.

I struggled to eat all of the offerings and felt rather full upon completion despite leaving sizeable quantities of rice and vegetables.
After swapping my L PJs for a M pair (the wife loves them) I asked if I could have a female amenity kit for her instead of my male version. She returned and reluctantly informed me that they only had two female amenity kits and as they had two female First passengers it would not be possible for me to have one. I thanked her for checking anyway. Upon reflection later I found this hard to believe. Does that then mean that they were not carry any female amenity kits onboard for the return flight either? Or were there some onboard but they wanted to hold onto them for female passengers on the way back. Mrs TEX277 appreciated the effort but was not too disappointed.
Due to the repeated problems I had been encountering with my ipod that had now decided to give up functioning altogether, I asked for and recieved an adapter for the inseat power supply. I plugged in my laptop and by headphones, loaded up itunes and spent the flight listening to music whilst I had the IFE tuned to the map and flight details. I snoozed for a sizeable portion of the flight, awaking a few times to check our location, use the lavatories and on one occassion to help myself to a Snicker from the selection of mid-flight snacks.
All too soon, we were around two hours away from Heathrow and the second meal service began. I was just not hungry but I had to at least tuck the Caviar didn't I? The canapes (satay) got off lightly but I was looking forward to the caviar. I was rather dismayed to see the caviar serving. It was bearly enough to provide a light covering of the three slices of the accompanying melba toast. From memory of previous SQ F flight, there is usually enough for a good covering whilst leaving enough leftover to eat alone. I though that such a meagre was quite strange especially since the cabin was only half full:confused:. I was not bothered by it enough to bring it to the attention of the crew though.

I hardly touched my salad and when the SQ girl came around to check on me seemed genuinely concerned that it was largely untouched. She enquired if I did not like it. I said it was fine but that I was just not really that hungry. She then continued to ask if I was feeling okay. I assured her that I was but after such a large first meal service even 8 hours later I was still not hungry. She understood and asked if I'd like a drink instead. I asked if I could get one of their Singapore Slings. She seemed pleased to have been asked and enthusiastically set about providing one to me. Upon serving it to me, she said that she hoped that I enjoyed the drink and that it would bring back some good memories from my visit to the Long Bar at Raffles on the previous evening. To be honest I am not sure if it had anything to do with the pressurisation, but his Sling seemed to have a bit more of a kick to it than yesterdays. Nonetheless, it was enjoyed and the memories that it brought back put a wry smile on my face as I sipped away.
LHR arrivals
We touched down around 25 minutes late having made up only 15 minutes of the 40 minute delay to departure from SIN. I deliberately noted the time that the wheels hit the tarmac at LHR and thought that there was absolutely no way that I could be through LHR quicker than either DPS or SIN. The looong taxi to the gate in T3 certainly did not get things off to the best start. Neither did the walk from the gate to immigration. IRIS took a dislike to my carry-on luggage entering the booth with me at immigration. I was called back out, then in, then back out, waiting for the door to close, gave up waiting, directed to the other IRIS machine which worked straight off and allowed me admission to my country.
After a slash and dash  visit to the lavatories in baggage reclaim I headed for our carousel. As I walked towards it, Ray walked past me on his way towards the green customs channel, placed his hand on my shoulder and thanked me for sending that glass of Champagne back to him upon our departure from SIN. I said no problem and wished his farewell. I was surprised to see bags begin to appear only a couple of minutes after me arrival at the carousel. I was pleased to see my bag as one of the first off and grabbed it and headed for the green customs channel too. The total absence of customs officers made me regret really not stocking up on Marlboros at US$13 per 200 carton.
As I exited the customs channel I noted the time. 36 minutes after touchdown. Now as much as I love to bash BAA I was quite impressed with this. Admittedly, it failed to beat DPS or SIN but considering just how long we had to taxi for, 36 minutes was acceptable.
I then had the long walk from T3 arrivals to the Central Bus Station where I had to wait 45 minutes for the first coach to my home town of Brighton. Despite touching down at 19:10 it was not until 22:30 that I walked through the front door and was welcomed home by Mrs TEX277.

I have now completed this TR in full and have gone back through and inserted links to the relevent photos for ease of use. Many thanks to everybody for reading my TR and I do hope that you enjoyed it.
This month is certainly proving to be rather busy for me. After my Vegas trip at the start of the month, this Bali trip and tonight I shall be attending my final Christmas Do with my old colleagues from my now previous employment. So far this month I have only spent one full day in the country!!
Now on 19th December I am beginning to count down the days until our (Mrs TEX277 gets to come along this time ^ ) BA First class outbound and Business Class return trip to NYC departing on 24th December. But that's another TR altogether (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=639638)!

Thanks for the a very interesting trip report. Sorry to hear about the job, does this mean a new username is required.
For me flying MH this year doesn't get you the legendary Singapore Sling like on SQ. I'm surprised you weren't hungry I flew a SQ day flight to London last year and I was starving. Seems like the portions in First are probably better than economy.
Great use of the SPG points.

But that's another TR altogether (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=639638)!
excellent report
out of interest (as I'm planning a LHR-DPS trip in October) how many miles (miles + cash) did you pay for this itinery?

Among the most well-written and delightful TRs that I have had the pleasure to read on FT.
Excellent work, TEX277! ^ ^

Many thanks for the bump MCS? ^
Due to the bump I realised earlier today that I had allowed by fotki account to lapse, therefore making the pictures unavailable. I have now sorted this out and the photo links are now working again.
My next trip report should be up this time next month, BA CW LHR-NYC return for a 10 day Caribbean cruise on the QM2.
More Champagne Sir?

FANTASTIC report TEX277, enjoyed reading every bit of it! I just got back from a 2 week trip - LAX, NRT, SIN, DPS, BKK, HKG, PEK and was on SQ F most of the way except a couple of sectors and after reading your TR, already looking forward to my next trip in a couple of months.
