Cathay Pacific managed to lose my luggage on flight CX289 from Hong Kong to Frankfurt on 11/28. I've never experienced such a thing so i am quite nervous whether my luggage will ever turn up.

I've checked in at HKG airport very early. My flight was at 23:55 local time on 11/28 but because i didn't wanted to carry the luggage with me i checked in at around 19:30. I went to the Cathay desk to ask them whether it was possible to check-in that early and the guy on the counter assured me it was fine. So i checked in, had diner with family at the airport walked around a bit and then went past the customs at around 21:00.

After i had arrived in Frankfurt and went past the customs the luggage was already coming out of the conveyor belt. Some people were already leaving after having taken their luggage and i was standing there waiting and waiting and at the end there were only a few people left and no luggage was coming out anymore. So i went to baggageclaim where there were several people complaining about the fact that their luggage/baggage was missing.

One of the guys at the counter told us to look at the bulky baggage belt on the other side of the hall so i went there to no avail. After i was back there were less people standing at the baggageclaim. I don't know if they somehow found their baggage or that they filled in the lost luggage report and left. There were 2 men still waiting but they were lucky that somehow 2 pieces of luggage came out of the conveyor belt and it was theirs so they left with their luggage.

I was the only one still around with my piece of luggage missing. So i went to file a report and the lady at the desk told me there was another CX plane coming from HKG with delay and i could wait cause there was 50 percent chance that it was in that plane. It was then around 06:45 local time and the plane was estimated at 09:00. I took the option to wait but i got no luck. It wasnt in that plane either. I had no option but to leave at 09:45 as i had to catch a train back to Holland.

Seems like bad luck was all over me cause i missed the international train to Holland at 09:17 because of waiting for my luggage and the train at 11:17 was cancelled so i had to wait till 13:17 ! I frikkin had to wait for about 3 hours due to a mistake of CX. Because of the long waiting i went back from the trainstation to the terminal and went to the Cathay desk to ask them if they had any update of my missing piece of luggage. They lady at the desk said only one thing : I CANT HELP U, GO HOME AND WAIT.

i was at boiling point. Your company makes a mistake and u are telling me in a unmannered way to sit back and do nothing ? i want my stuff back !
I was demanding she called baggageclaim and the lady of baggageclaim came to the desk and asked me for more details of my baggage. Then i left to catch the train.

All these things happened yesterday. I called FRA airport baggageclaim this morning and they had no update. I don't even know if my baggage ever went into the right plane or it's still in HKG. They couldnt tell me. Somehow they can manage to offload baggage from persons who didn't turn up in the plane. My flight had a 10 minute delay because of 2 persons who didnt show up. They had to delay the start because CX had to offload their baggage of the plane. In that situation they can identify their baggage and offload it ( cause they know the baggage of those 2 persons went into the plane ) but when it's missing they can't identify if my baggage ever went into the plane. Kind of strange for me cause when it never made the plane it should be in HKG airport but hey can't locate where it ever went.

My aunt in HKG phoned Cathay several times and everytime their answer is : We are working on it. We will call you back but they never call back.

I am worrying about the fact that someone else may have took it because i was one of the later persons arriving at the conveyor belt and when i arrived at the belt several people were already leaving. Or someone inside HKG airport cargo took it ? ( don't know if it's even possible )

Another possibility is the fact that i checked in early. I don't know how the system works at HKG airport but baggage that were checked in have to go to the right cargo to load onto the right plane ( is that right ? ). As i was checking in very early maybe there wasnt a cargo assigned to my flight yet and it went somewhere somehow, never arrived at the cargo for my flight and then went missing.

Last possibility i am thinking of is that they offloaded my baggage together with the baggage from the 2 persons who never showed up for the flight. But that should be traceable i think. So i have no clue what to do now.

HKG airport and Cathay HKG have no clue where my baggage went according to my aunt. They can't locate it or even tell me if it ever made it onto the plane. Only thing they told was that there are a few pieces of luggage that could be mine as they kind of match the description i gave them. I had a addresstag on my bag and the baggageclaimsticker was also put onto the baggage. Little chance that both were taken/fallen off the baggage. It almost seems like my baggage disappeared in a blackhole or something like a conspiracy.

Anyone got any experience regarding such a situation ? i've tried to search in the forums but most people seem to get a quick response that their baggage is identified/located somewhere and it all ends in a good way ( though for some it takes a longer time then 2 or 3 days ) but my baggage seems like it dissappeared into nothing .. help me !

Every large airline loses some luggage everyday. Sometime luggage is lost forever. CX cannot give information that they do not have like "Where is my luggage?" or "When will you find my luggage?". If they knew that then it wouldn't be lost.

it makes sense what u say but i find it kind of strange that it disappearred after it went onto the belt at check-in.

After that they have no clue what happened to it, that makes me wonder if it ever made it onto the plane or is stuck somewhere at HKG airport cargo. At least find out if it ever made it onto the plane. If u can identify and offload bags of other passengers who didnt show up for the flight than u have the ability to check if it ever made it onto the plane. Cathay can confirm their baggage had made it onto plane to offload it. Why can't they see if mine ever made it onto the plane ?

Now it gives me the feeling that they threw it onto the conveyor belt to cargo and that was it, say bye to your bag.

Edit : seems like it is stuck at HKG airport, just got a call from my aunt who said a matching bag for my given description was found. They will sent it to FRA airport tomorrow and i have to await further information and details.

Almost all luggage is lost after it goes on the belt. The tags can get torn off. It can fall out of a cart. It can get left inside an airplane. It can get sent to the wrong city.

Your first sentence was probably written in haste and not intended. God forbid if *almost all luggage is lost after it goes on the belt*!

Dcell, I can well imagine how annoying it is to lose one's luggage although these things do happen. Do keep us informed of the outcome.

Just in case you are not aware, as described here http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_INTL/helpingyoutravel/claimbaggage you can use the file reference from your lost baggage report to access the WORLDTRACE system and get updates on progress with your bag.

i am aware of the tracking website. Thanks anyway for telling me.

Apparently they located my bag although it's not 100% confirmed it's mine. It matches the description i gave them so it's about 90% it's mine. I got a call from my aunt in HKG who was handling this for me with Cathay HKG and they told her they found it. So i called Cathay HKG to confirm it myself and they told me it should be my bag and the baggageclaimtag was fallen off my bag so it never made it onto the plane. I asked them about my addresstag but they couldnt confirm it was still on the bag and i also asked them about the weight but they didnt weigh it. Since it matches the description ( color, no pockets on outside, label of the bag and a keylock on the zip ) it should be mine ( i hope ).

They have now sent it directly with the next flight onto the plane to Holland AMS schiphol airport ( cause it's more nearby my hometown ). If they sent it to Germany FRA airport they have to redistribute it to AMS and they dont want to take the risk that it will get lost again ( it was also my preferred by me to have my bag sent directly to one destination and minimize the risk of getting lost again ). It should arrive tomorrow and then i have to call again about the time of delivery and when it arrives i will know if it's mine. I am glad i now got some confirmation. Will keep you updated when it arrives.

They lady at the desk said only one thing : I CANT HELP U, GO HOME AND WAIT.

It's exactly what I do nowadays after too many bags lost at FRA/LHR with LH/TG/BA/AY/whoever. Always turns up within a few days and is delivered at my door. I never check in anything valuable/essential so I just don't care. Easier if they deliver it to me. :D
