Over the past few years, I have been a member of the BMW club and have attended many drivers eduction events all across the country. In Feb, there is a DE in California and I don't want to drive to CA. I've rented several of the 300M's with the 5.7L hemi (darn lots of HP) and the Caddy STS with the 4.7L Northstar V8 (again, lots of HP). Both cars are available for me to rent in SFO but i'm toying with the idea of renting a Ford Mustang Shelby GT-H (500+hp).
So.........
The Caddy and Chrysler will be uber cheap. The Mustang will be $199/day x 2.
Thoughts?

First off, it's Hertz and NOT Herts.
Second, this is the wrong forum mate. National does not have any GT-Hs, STSs or 300 Hemis in it's fleet.
Since the topic is about Hertz I'll move it to the Hertz forum.

The GT-H has only 350 hp. You will also be limited to, I think, 75 miles per day with a hefty overage charge.
They don't make the 300M anymore. I think you're thinking 300 RT or 300C. I actually don't like driving the 300s much even though they have all that power. The suspension is way too soft. I always imagine it as driving a large sailing ship.
From SFO, I would pick an Audi A8L, Nissan 350z, or Audi S4 Cabrio (you might not be able to get the S4 anymore).

If you want to keep it in the Roundel family, Hertz's downtown locations at Mason Street and at Van Ness Ave have 3-Series cars (usually only 325is though). They are local cars and can NOT be returned at the airport however, AFAIK.
Other than that, I would also try the Infiniti M45, Chevrolet Corvette or the Audi A4 Cabrio (as Tummy mentioned, the S4 Cabrio may be on its way out).

Cabrio's <> DE's. You are required to have a tin top, not a rag top.
*sigh*
I do like the idea of the 325 or the vette. Someone mentioned earlier that the 300's are like a sailing ship. When I read this, I nearly fell on the ground laughing. I had one a week or so ago and was convinced that I should be in my late 60's and wearing a dark suit with a monocle.

Shelby GTH has 350hp? Eh? I may need to rethink this one.
Also, what is the deal with the pre and post inspection? I know that I won't drive more than the allotted miles, but I am worried about paint chips. With a hefty application of painters tape at strategic locations, I know I can fix that. Are the brake pads looked at? Condition of the tires? You know, "wear" items.

If you want to take a Hertz car to a DE, the 350Z is the way to go. Much better brakes than the GT-H, independent rear suspension, and a tiptronic-style transmission instead of regular auto. Also, Hertz are much less likely to obsessively check it on your return and ask tricky questions about (e.g.) shoe polish on the tire edges.
If you don't mind flying to LA instead, Budget of Beverly Hills have various BMWs and Porsches.
I just now got that you're going to be actually driving the hertz car in the event. I would also suggest the Infiniti G35. It shouldn't be too expensive since since it's only an H class.

Ding ding! I just don't want to drive cross country in my 87' 325. So.... a little rental mayhem might be in the cards. Right now, i'm leaning towards the 350Z or a caddy from (cough) National (cough).
