Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Can someone help me get my laptop computer back from the Wing?

Yesterday, I did one of the more bone-headed things of my career. After working for awhile in the Wing, prior to the departure of CX880 to Los Angeles, I somehow managed to pack up all my stuff except my IBM laptop computer, which was sitting on the desk right in front of me.

Not only that, I didn't even notice until after our flight took off. About 30 minutes into the flight, the purser approached me and informed me that they had received a Telex from Hong Kong indicating that they had found my lap top. I was instructed upon landing to contact ground staff and they would tell me what to do to retrieve it.

Upon landing, the person who opened the door said they had received a Telex, but that their version of the Telex said they weren't sure it was mine. :( (My name wasn't on the laptop, the only way they could have figured out is that the welcome screen says "HKG_Flyer1" on it; that's presumably how they tracked me down inflight.

I was instructed to proceed to baggage services desk... but there no one had a clue as to what to do. Moreover, the service is outsourced to some company (not sure who) and he didn't seem to have much of an idea as to how to proceed. After waiting for someone from CX to arrive, I finally happened upon a fairly junior CX staffer, who similarly didn't know what to do other then file a missing baggage report (even though it wasn't baggage).

This didn't leave me feeling very warm and cozy, so I decided to go upstairs, where actual CX employees were busy checking pax in for the return flight. After much back and forth and scratching of heads, one fairly senior person (a "Service Leader") took down my information and suggested I follow up with the CX Secretary in L.A. I suggested that we contact the Wing, since they were the ones who found it... she said that was a great idea and looked at me expectantly, thinking I had the phone number (I did not). Unfortunately, she didn't either, so that was that.

Well, anyway I'm now wondering what to do. I'm happy to pay to have the think boxed up and shipped to the U.S., but don't know how to get in touch with the folks in Hong Kong who have my computer.

I also suspect that with each passing moment, the chances of ever seeing the computer again are less and less.

Any ideas?

How did they find you if all they knew was "HKG_Flyer1"? Did they google you or something? I'm impressed.

I did something worse once in HKG.

I was flying QF back to SYD and of course I used the Wing instead of the substandard QF lounge. However on my way to the QF gates (a fair walk from gate 2). I went to the RELAY shop to get some magazines and I accidnetally left a whole bag of duty free shoppign there.

I only realised I left something when I arrived in SYD and I thought it was on the QF flight, so I asked the baggage service desk to page the fligth dispathcer. But no bags there.

I emailed the MPO and within 2 hours they tracked down the bags and send it on the first flight back to SYD! I am so surprised they managed to do this.

Also did not cost me a cent and I picked up the bag at the airport in the evening.

Quite impressive that the duty free bag was not picked up by another pax and wound up in lost and found. I've always felt that HKG was one of the safest cities in the world. Also that CX sent the bag to SYD for free, when you weren't even flying CX! They do manage at times to give more than excellent service.

I know. I am really impressed at CX. They even called me several times to confirm the status of the bag and also when it arrived in SYD they asked me what time will it be convenient for me to come and pick it up.

I neglected to I.D. my computer in any way. I think what they did was look at the welcome screen, where it prompts for the entry of a password. I have identified myself in windows by my first and last name. Then, they must have reviewed the scanned boarding passes from that evening, at which point they could tell that I was on CX880. Finally, they sent a telex to the plane.

Yep, pretty impressive.^ ^

As a follow-up, I've exchanged e-mails with someone from CX in Los Angeles who has assured me that they are on the case!!

And, yes, I am still very, very embarrassed!!!

Just a suggestion to everyone
Scotch tape a business card to your laptop computer cover.
Also helps with secutity in the U.S. where you MUST remove your
laptop from your bag/case.
You would be amazed at the number of same looking lap tops that
go though security xray at the same time
