Does anyone know the easiest way to get to SYD without flying? The flight at $180AUD seems a little dear and I'm going to sit around and read a book all day on Tuesday anyways. There seems to be a train from Newcastle at 7.56 that gets me to Central station around 10.30. I don't know how to get to the airport from there. Does that sound like a good plan and does anyone know my options for getting to the airport?

Once you get to Central, just grab a train to the airport, will take around 15 min and although overpriced for what it is if you are on your own, cheaper than a taxi.

Massively overpriced but I do find it pretty convenient.

No, but it only serves to highlight how overpriced the airport segment is

No, but it only serves to highlight how overpriced the airport segment is About $2 or so for the extra distance involved, and another $7 or so for the station access fee. Not too bad really as far as airport transportation goes.

My main issue is that you are not paying extra for a special airport type train, it has no special area to store luggage etc, often you cant get a seat from the airport because its a commuter train too.

And the pricing structure just looks all the more silly because SYD is so close the CBD and taxis are cheap.

The big issue with Sydney is, as you have said, that it is a commuter line which just happens to go through the airport stations.

But the fact remains that it is indeed an airport service. And the pricing is about the same as what you will pay with LUL from Heathrow, and far less than what you will pay on HEx.

It seems that aeropelican flies Newcastle to SYD. I'm getting a flight with them for $80ish AUD. More than the train+cab, but not by a lot and its a huge time savings. I didnt' feel like donating $180 to Quantas for a 40 minute flight. Thanks everyone for your help.

If you want to get out to Newcastle Airport it's a bit of a trek from the city centre - Port Stephens Coaches head out there from Newcastle - take a look at http://pscoaches.com.au/timenewcastle.php for the timetable, tickets cost $5.90. Otherwise you're looking at $50-$60 for a taxi out there if the timings don't suit (which definitely eats into the savings).
