CX Fuel Surcharges will be revised as follow for ticket issue/reissue
on/after 01Dec06.
Levels:
I/ FROM USD61.70/HKD481.00 TO USD59.70/HKD466.00
II/ FROM USD15.00/HKD117.00 TO USD14.50/HKD113.00
Below please find the details:
1. The surcharge will be revised for ticket issue/reissue
on/after and travel on/after 01Dec06.
2. USD59.70/HKD466.00 or equivalent for CX flight coupons
between HKG and South West Pacific, North America,
Europe, Middle East, Africa, South Asian Sub-Continent,
between Bangkok and Dubai.
3. USD14.50/HKD113.00 or equivalent for CX flight coupons
not mentioned in point 2.
4. The Surcharges apply per passenger per CX flight coupon
and will be collected from all passengers regardless of
ticket stock except
a/ Codeshare ground transportation within France
b/ Ground Transportation between DMM and BAH on CX
flight coupons.
5. This applies to all fare type and regardless of class
of travel and type of fares including Frequent Flyer
Program.
6. The Surcharge is to be collected at point of sale or
ticket issue/reissue and show as -YR- in the
Tax/Fees/Charges box of ticket.
7. There is no exemption to any category of passengers.
-such as Children/Infants/Senior/ID/AD/FOC...etc.
8. The Surcharge is interlinable and the amount shall
accrue to CX.
9. The surcharge will apply until further notice.
Let's assume the base level at which no surcharges apply is US$25/barrel; so oil peaked at about US$70 which means that $45 increase in price equates to HK$481 of long-haul surcharge. The price has now dropped back by about US$15/barrel, so the surcharge should drop by about HK$150, not HK$15!
Somebody at the CAD needs to get a grip of this!

I don't like the sound of this "This applies to all fare type and regardless of class of travel and type of fares including Frequent Flyer Program. ".
Asiamiles is one of the few programmes , if not, only programme that applies full taxes and surcharges on all its award ticketing partners, not only to CX flights.

QF has fuel fines for award tickets.

They may as well adjust fuel surcharge based on baseline of $40-50/barrel, theres no way that crude is gonna drop to $25. But it seems like customers are more sympathetic to fuel surcharge than just a general price adjustment... from flying to package shipping to ocean freight..

Who would have thought that an airline would consider fuel expense a cost of doing business and build it into the price of their product, as the do lease fees, payroll, etc. Of course by pulling this BS the additional cost per ticket does not show up when comparing ticket prices on Travelocity, etc. They are trying to work the system against us, I say work the system against them at every opportunity you can.

This is getting silly:
CX Fuel Surcharges will be revised as follows for ticket issue/reissue on
or after 01 February 2007.
Levels:
I/ FROM USD59.70/HKD466.00 TO USD56.20/HKD438.00
II/ FROM USD14.50/HKD113.00 TO USD13.60/HKD106.00
A calculation from a pilot over at PPRUNE shows that the fuel "surcharge" currently covers more than the entire cost of the fuel on most flights! This is a scam - someone in CAD needs to rediscovers some balls!

Would be interesting to see this. Have you got a link?

The calculation is approximately:
A full flight (worst case) has porbably 90 tonnes of fuel or 720 barrels. At USD60/barrel, it is about USD43K.
At USD56.2 each at 300 passengers, the fuel surcharge is about USD17K.
So it is about 40% or more of the fuel cost.

Air Canada Aeroplan also applies fuel surcharges to it's award tickets for flights on AC metal.

I see... interesting...
but I assume jet fuel and crude oil are not the same price, and jet fuel would cost a little more due to the refining costs... still, I think airlines should stop trying to trick customers and just add the cost of fuel back into the ticket prices.. the whole fuel surcharge thing is just silly...

I agree it is silly, and I do not know why it is done that way. I suppose there must be a reason.

Because, in many places, their fares look deceptively cheaper this way and get more attention than they would otherwise get if the fuel charge was included in the loaded fare like has normally been the case throughout most of commercial aviation history.

... and airline pays less commission, and collects surcharge on awards cf if included in base fare as it should be.
Still, at least it is a reduction. NZ is refusing to reduce fuel surcharges
