If your company switched to Hertz, you will use Hertz a lot next year, and you have some use for the rental car anyway (e.g., going to Home Depot to pick up lots of smelly mulch), I would say get a cheap week-end rental.

If your company switched from Hertz, why would you want 5*?

Your 5* welcome kit includes 1 Free Day (usable standalone - very valuable if you ever need to do a one day rental). If you think you'll have a use for that, and you have easy access to a cheap rental at a nearby HLE (the 50% off promo might help), by all means do it.

Plus, if you are using Hertz next year, you'll kick-start your rental counter to more free days.

I probably wouldn't do it for upgrades or the incremental ZE1 points alone. But the Free Day cert probably justifies a cheapie HLE rental if you have one close by...

You should call them first to see if they will upgrade you. I was a little bit short of the required rentals (however, this was for President's Circle) but they looked at my rentals and since they were M-R rentals they upgraded me. Sometimes they can upgrade you if you are a bit short.
