Just an FYI that it is no longer legal to go trekking by yourself in Nepal. As of the end of October 2006 the requrement for a Trekking Registration Certifcate (TRC) was introduced. The TRC can only be obtained through a registered treking agency or guide. The cost is negligible, but you are required to take a guide or porter.

That being said, if you are set on trekking alone, you could either go without a TRC and pass checkponts early in the morning or late at night or you could try getting one from an agency without hiring thier guiding services. I have not met anyone able to do the latter in Kathmandu, but people in Pokhara have had varying amounts of success for varying amounts of money.

As of the end of November 2006 the Maoists were still shaking down tourists for money. Usually 100 rupees for each day that you are trekking.
