We are getting my mother and father a trip to Scotland for Christmas. I was thinking about getting them 5 nights at the Turnberry Wesstin but was wonderinf if anyone had an experience with that property and how it and the area appeals to non-golfers...
thanks

I'm not sure when they'll be going, but I would assume over the summer.
My wife and I went for 3 days last end of September at the Turnberry. She attended the spa and loved it while I golfed. And fantastic golf it is.
The area (ayrshire) is relatively rural, and there are a handful of castles (Cluzean is worthy and gorgeous) closeby and some beautiful small towns, including the homeplace of Robert Burns and worth of visiting.
When you arrive at the Turnberry, you've gone through some very small towns to get there. Ayr (the biggest city) is approx. 40 km away. And I found it had some great restaurants, but otherwise didn't find a lot to do.
I think there is lots to be seen in rural Scotland, but I suspect the city of Edinburgh has more museums and such.
That said, the Turnberry has horseback riding, falconry, bird hunting, hiking, spa, archery, etc. I think one could spend a day here and there and have a great time.
I'd suggest 2-3 days at the Westin Turnberry, and 2-3 in Edinburgh. I'd put both on the plate and let them decide based on their interests.

Never stayed in the hotel but I come from around that area. There's quite a lot to do for non-golfers (I don't play golf) and I reckon it's an often overlooked area of Scotland. It's obviously not the Highlands but there are some lovely bays and gentle, pretty scenery.
In terms of places to go then Ayr, Alloway and Burns Country are close by. Also Culzean Castle which is a major Scottish castle with extensive grounds. And Glasgow isn't that far away for a shopping and museums trip.
Think the hotel has a good spa too which might be of interest.
(And this post having overlapped with the one above - which posted while I was typing! - you should be aware that Ayr is far from being a city.)
