What are locations like during Thanksgiving and Christmas?

I am thinking of taking a trip on Thanksgiving Day, and even though I am 5*, I hardly EVER rent during any holiday. I try to avoid them as much as possible, probably the fear of the unknown.

What's it like? Gold Booth swamped? No good (read: Prestige and newer ;) ) cars available? Easy to upgrade?

And how are the bigger locations? Plenty of cars, or "here, this is the last Taurus we have with 20K+ miles...lol"?

Just trying to get an idea of renting near one of the major holidays comin' up...and what to expect. Thanks.

Well, I can't say anything about inventory, but if you travel ON the holiday, it should be dead. The days just before and after holidays were really a zoo. I once was treated like crap on a holiday because it did actually get fairly busy in the afternoon and some people called out, so I called out the for my shift the next morning (I was feeling physically sick from the day before and that stuff). I heard that several others (notably several people who called in for most other holidays too) had the same idea and it took hours to get the mess fixed up along with pissing off hundreds of customers.

I rented from Hertz at SFO the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) and it was pretty empty. My name was on the Gold board, my wife and I got in the car (a newer Hyundai Sonata w/Neverlost - a complimentary upgrade for my Economy rental) and drove off without any delay.

We returned the car on Sunday and it was busy (lots of cars at the return lines) but everything was smooth and quick. A return agent was helping us as we pulled in and we got out just as easily as we got in.

Our flight was delayed a couple hours, but that's another story...
