Starwood Preferred Guest - Bonus points question...

Hi,

This is my first year of membership so please bear with me if i'm too confused...

I have some stays at the W's this year during the qualifying period of nov 17-Dec 3 for triple points. However, i am supposed to call in and tell them a code in order to sign me up for the triple points. Can i do that after i booked my stay online ?

Also, i referred my wife to try the spg program, and i've noticed on other posts that people referred their spouses and they got upgraded because of that. Is that true or am i misreading here?
