How far in advance do you have to use miles?

Is there anywhere on the website besides the award travel to book a flight if NW's are not available say for the partners to see if there is a flight on one of the partners airlines?

Try NW Japan English website. You could check the availability and book award ticket on partner airlines, even on JAL.

NW Japan website gotta love it.

Good for looking up availability, but you'll have to call the US reservation line (if you are in the US), as you cannot book award tickets on the NW Japan website unless you have a mailing address in Japan.

So long as you book it on nwa.com, you can get an award ticket right up to travel. If you're not Plat and have to call in to book a ticket, there'll be a $50 charge if you book within 10 days of travel, IIRC.

It's pretty decent but there are black-out days. Sometimes you have to spend more points for ticket redemption.
