I am NZ*G traveling with a friend who has no status. I know he will be able to come with me in the lounge, but can he use the premium check in counter at AKL with me as well? What about other Star Gold check in counters around the world? What's the usual practice? And what about priority boarding? Can we go together? Thanks.

Definitely yes use premium check in at AKL. Priority boarding not unless flying business class. Elsewhere, well it depends on the airline. *G benefits don't accrue to your travelling companions.

[..]Priority boarding not unless flying business class.[..]I've never had a problem bringing a companion with me as *G and priority boarding when flying in economy, but obviously YMMV and I guess it's up to the GAs!

Never had a problem taking a companion through priority checkin in any NZ served city either...

Normally if you're travelling together they will let you board together, but then again depends on how they do the boarding announcement as to whether there is priority boarding. Yesterday on NZ 6 MEL-AKL, they announced "..... boarding rows X to Y" then they said "Business Class and Elite Gold, Star Alliance gold can board at their leisure", but it was already a mad house. So business and *G basically got stuck there in the mass unles they were still in the lounge, which looks pretty cool. Will try it again next month flying UA to the US.
