Northwest WorldPerks (Discontinued Program) - Getting Upgrade when changing to earlier flight

I am flying to FLL on the 9pm flight. (didnt get upgraded 1st is full) Now I just found out I can leave earlier. There are 1st seats open on the 7am and 1:30 flight. If I paid the "fly now" fee in the am will I be upgraded (being I figured all elites that are flying already have been upgraded) or am I missing something?
Thanks!

Depending on how much time you have, you might want to stand by for the earlier flight -- I've been upgraded for free on that basis a few times.

I agree with what BobH says.
More than once I've gone stand by for an earlier flight, and if seats were available I've always been able to get an upgrade.

One obvious thing you are missing is that the two facts that it is within 24 hours of flight time and there are seats in F open do not mean that there are not elites in coach. Particularly if there are only 1-3 seats left open in F, which may be being held for last-minute purchases (either of F directly, or of high-yield Y fares by last-minute purchasers).

I had flown DTW to FLL regularly as a Silver and had very spotty upgrades - on the order of 20%. Probably had the worst luck with the 9:00 pm... best luck with the 7:00 am. Don't forget that it also has a lot to do with your fare class... so I don't know how the "fly now" fee impacts that.
Good luck... Bring a light coat... it's starting to get cool in the evenings. :)
