Does anyone know if its okay for passenger 1 to fly on an award flight gifted by someone else (i.e. the award is not earned by passenger 1), and passenger 2 flys on companion pass as the designated companion of passenger 1? Essentially both passengers will fly free.
That will work fine. No problem.

As long as the companion pass earner (passenger 1) is flying on any type of ticket, the companion can travel as well. This includes paid, RR, Green mustride, or even standby passes. The only thning that doesn't work is double companion pass. If pass 1 is traveling as the companion of someone else, then their companion can't travel, as a companion also. An individual may not travel as both a Member and a Companion on the same flight. No Rapid Rewards flight credits will be awarded for flights taken by the Companion using the Companion Pass.
On a side note, reviewing the rules & regs from their site, looks like we're getting a break on taxes by just paing for sec. fees, loooks like we could be paying all the taxes:
The Companion Pass is valid for free travel only when the Companion is accompanied on his/her flight(s) by the Rapid Rewards Member. Southwest Airlines' Contract of Carriage rules apply. The Member and the Companion will be responsible for any passenger facility charges, federal excise tax payments, or other taxes or user fees which may be assessed by law on the free travel.

Thanks for the response. What if passenger 1 is flying on an award flight gifted by passenger 2 (passenger 2 earned the award)? Can passenger 2 still fly as the designated companion of passenger 1?

IIRC, it does not matter who donated the award ticket... as long as passenger 1 is travelling on award.. and passenger 2 on the CP... you should be fine.

I'm confused. I am thinking of getting a companion pass for my wife using
my Hilton points.
Can I then give one of my free tickets to my daughter and assuming I change the companion pass name have her husband travel with her using the companion pass?
It isn't what SWA told me.

A companion pass is used for a companion to fly free with the person who earned it. This means that what you describe (earn a companion pass for you for use with your wife, or for your wife [your post isn't clear on this point, but it doesn't matter which], then give an award ticket to your daughter, change the companion pass to her husband so that they can travel free together) will not work.

You cannot transfer the companion pass to anybody else. you can designate the
companion who can fly with you. The pass belongs to the person who
earns it, and the person who earned the pass can designate a companion.
