Just about to book a Red e-deal MEL-LHR, and these are the rules as shown on qantas.com.

Before and after departure:
Date changes permited.
Itinerary changes permitted. At the time of making the change, you must pay (per person per change):
an itinerary change fee of A$100
any fare difference
a telephone service fee of A$75

My questions is, is a date change considered an itinerary change?

It's irrelevant whether it's a date or an itinerary change in the case of these fares. You get a credit of the original paid amount less $175* per pax for the rebooking of a new fare.

*$175 = (itinerary change fee of A$100) + (telephone service fee of A$75)

A red e-deal may not allow an upgrade - if that is important.

I thought that was only for domestic red-e-deals

I have upgraded an red-e-deal SYD-WLG online with points. It just costs a lot more but how else can you burn points without wanting to get an economy award.

Domestically, Red e-deal fares book into the N & O classes. These two as well as Q are often used for International fights but are sometimes described as 'Sale" fares rather than red e-deal.

Also, many international Red e-deal flights book into other fare buckets such as V; which can have upgrades requested.

By buying a higher booking class and upgrading that, or by booking business award.

Do you perchance know the (original) booking class of your red-e-deal?

Booking class "S". I decided to upgrade as it was the return from a holiday and it was off to work the next day. Oh I did not originally plan to request an upgrade it was sort of a spur of the moment thing and I was amzed that there was an opportunity to do it.

I was frustrated the last SYD-WLG trip where I wanted to upgrade, because it was my birthday, but there was no online availablity left. When I got onto the flight there was only 6 people in the Business Class cabin out of 16. Oh well I got the next best things as I was in row 5 of the 737-400 and they also gave me the DVD wallet to select what I wanted to watch rather than what was on the screens. ^

I can confirm that I purchased a SYD/LHR return "Red E-deal" fare from in S class prior to the fuel surcharge going up and having the same rules as what you described above for my trip. I was due to travel on 25 November from SYD/LHR on QF 1 via BKK, but when news of the Qantas Club lounge not being available was annouced, I rang Qantas and was able to change my flight out to QF 31 via SIN without any penalty because the routing is still SYD/LHR. Hence, your fare would allow a change from QF 9 to QF 29 because the routing is still MEL/LHR no matter where the flight stops. As a result, you could not do QF 9 to SIN and then change to QF 31 from SIN to LHR for example.

In respect to date changes, I have since changed the ticket to March next year (which consequently falls in the same season as my original trip in November this year). I was able to change the dates without any additional cost but, as noted above, had to keep the same routing. I was also not charged any extra costs because the fuel surcharges had since gone up, since I booked before the rise a couple of months ago.

That only applies if the journey is ticketed as SYD-LHR and not as SYD-BKK-LHR . If booked as 2 sectors , then it would have been a rerouting
