Would be great to go home on my birthday and booked a room at the W! Call me crazy but I think staying in a hotel on your birthday in your hometown is cool! ^ Fingers crossed for the mid-August opening! :)

Their actual target is around Sept 15th.
They are actually booking groups for October so I guess it will be possible to reserve individual rooms there in 3-4 weeks from now.

I was up in Montreal on the weekend and walked by it - still much to do and my guess would be the end of Sept/04. I was expecting something much older as I heard it was the former Bank of Canada building - however it is the 1964 Bank of Canada building and the exterior looked kind of bland.

Montreal is a great city and this will be a welcome *wood property. I'm also expecting some great room rates as even Montreal hotel rates are on the low side.

Update....
On the W Montreal website there's an email address contact for their sales office. I emailed them to see if there was any update and here's the reponse I received.

Thank you for your interest in the W Montréal, We do not have a specific date of the open at the present time.
We are looking at Mid-September.

Our reservation system will be working in 2 weeks. We will then have more information.

The opening is pushed back again to October 8th.

I was in the lobby of the hotel today.... Really great vibe and get style. Rooms are special too. Bathroom open up into the bedroom in a Mega catagory, only a curtain to seperate. Wonderful rooms have showers and tempered blue glass facing into the bedroom. The common areas (hallways, meeting rooms and whatnot) look great too.

F+B will be run by some of the best operators in Montreal.

Check this place out ASAP if you travel to Montreal.

You might want to check your reservation. I had recently booked a night on Oct.16th for a $269 CDN 'Welcome Package' rate, (which by the way included triple SPG points + cocktails and gift) but had to cancel. When I went on SPG.com to cancel, I noticed my rate had changed to $329. I had to bring up my e-mail confirmation just to verify I did book it at $269. Right after, I checked my April booking for the W and saw my rate was again changed, this time from $319CDN to $649USD. Not sure what's going on, but I'll deal with this later.

I had the same problem with a reservation in November. First I had a rate in CADs. Then it changed to the same amount in USD. I called and they tried to change it back to CADs and when I went online it went even higher in USD's.

A few days ago I checked rates again and saw new CAD rates. So, I cancelled the old reservation and made a new one.

We'll see if they stay in CAD's.

W Hotels Opens First Property in Canada: W Montreal Will Merge Historical Significance With Sophisticated Design
Tuesday November 16, 9:04 am ET

NEW YORK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- W Hotels Worldwide, a collection of world-class hotels with a unique balance of comfort and leading design, will make its bold entry into Canada with the opening of the W Montreal this October. Transforming the former Banque du Canada building in the historical Square Victoria in Old Montreal, the hotel is connected to the Convention Center and an underground concourse that marks the cultural rejuvenation of the area with retail shops, fine dining and nightlife. W Montreal will make its mark with an inviting W Living Room experience, oversized guest rooms, an appealing restaurant, three scenic bars and a destination Spa.

"Montreal is a beautiful city with a unique sense of style and cultural energy you can't find anywhere else on the planet," said Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and C.E.O. of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT - News), W's parent company. "It's a perfect setting to introduce Canada to W and we're thrilled to be a part of it."

MONTREAL MEETS W FOR THE FIRST TIME

Upon entering the hotel, guests will be welcomed under a sexy lit canopy setting the mood for the W's renowned Living Room experience, a 3,000 square foot space for social gatherings. Plush sofa-style chairs and playful rows of pillows, soothing beats and colorful cocktails will ease guests into a unique retreat. A glowing red welcome desk located next to the concierge offers W's signature "Whatever/Whenever" service, whether it's cookies and milk at 2am or a last-minute tuxedo fitting. The Living Room will also feature three 12-foot high waterfalls with water trickling down sculptured glass which will be illuminated from the back. One will be located behind the Welcome Desk, one behind Concierge, and one facing the elevators.

Adjacent to the Living Room is Wunderbar, a lounge bar created by leading development company bpc with an outdoor-inspired interior. Ebony floors are complimented by stingray banquettes and oversized metallic basin chairs, as a ceiling of copper-tinted mirror enables subtle voyeurism. Wunderbar's sunken, cave-like VIP area offers a sexy sanctum capped by a Barisol ceiling. Lounging options include communal silver banquettes and embossed velvet "Pop" chairs. A large projection screen, showing images of Canadian landscapes, serves as the backdrop for a stone DJ station.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW

The 152-room hotel features generously sized guestrooms designed to reflect the natural elements of Montreal. W's Signature beds with feather-top mattress, 350 thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets and goose down comforters, are outfitted in white fur blankets and pillows for the cold winter months. Fresh cut flowers mirroring the lush greenery throughout the city will be a standard in every guest room. Calming and serene with accents of electric blue, the rooms feature oversized couches and desks, illuminated end tables and voyeur showers, separated from the bedrooms only by a curtain for privacy. A first for W design, each bathroom features a peek-a-boo window, adding an element of pure fun.

The W Montreal will offer eight suites designed like no other in the city, including five 2-level "Wow suites" at 547 square feet each and three 1,000- square-foot "Extreme-Wow" suites with 20 foot high ceilings and floor-to- ceiling windows overlooking Square Victoria, a view exclusive to W Montreal. The suites open up onto a spacious balcony and the scent of the flowers from the Square below.

Standard in-room features include dual telephones, high-speed Internet access, CD players with an extensive CD library, 27"-color TVs with advanced in-room entertainment systems, DVD players, coffeemakers, cotton pique bathrobes and custom bath amenities.

YUM

Located in the heart of the new Cite Internationale District, W Montreal will entice foodies from near and far with "Otto" and its sizzling young chefs Franco Gioffre and Gaetan Poitras at the helm. Designed by W in collaboration with Miguel Cancio Martins of Buddha Bar (Paris) and Man Ray (New York) fame, the restaurant will serve Italian fusion with tasty dishes like ravioli stuffed with lobster and roasted Cornish hen. For those seeking a more secluded atmosphere, there will be a private dining room complete with seating for twelve. Otto will also provide 24-hour room service for guests staying at the hotel.

Taking the grand staircase up from the Living Room, guests can make their way to the mezzanine level where the Plateau Bar is located. Overlooking the Living Room, the Plateau Bar will be donned in soft red and brown tones with woven lighting fixtures and a pressed leaf bar. Happy hour will never be the same as the financial crowds from the neighboring stock exchange are expected to make this their new after-hours refuge.

SPA

W Montreal features Away, a 1,200-square-foot spa that will be a destination in itself, complete with five luxurious treatment rooms where hotel guests and locals can unwind and be pampered with the latest treatments. Away will use G.M. Collin products exclusively in their treatments. For those who don't want to leave the comfort of their rooms, in-room massages will be available. Adjacent to the spa is Detox, a full-service fitness center with state of the art exercise equipment.

ALL WIRED UP

W Montreal will feature Wired, a full-service business center open 24 hours. There will be 3,000 square feet of meeting facilities on the mezzanine level and six meeting studios. Sensory Setup, a W practice designed to liven up meetings with soothing music, explosive tastes and stimulating visuals, will ease guests into a creative frame of mind.

Just returned from a weekend visit to Montreal and a stay at the new W Montreal.

I am happy to report that those who are W fans will not be disappointed in this new hotel. The W Montreal is situated across from Victoria Square and a very convenient Metro station. The Intercontinental is around the corner.

I stayed in a Urbane Suite at a pre-opening special rate of $364CAD (rack rate is apparently around $730 per the posted sign on the checkin counter). The suite is approximately 500-500 sq feet and consists of the wonderful Starwood bed, a center divider where the flatscreen TV is placed (so it can swivel between facing the bed or facing the sofa), a large sofa/lounge (large enough for two people to stretch out on), desk, two sink bathroom with a really great tub and large shower. The only door in the room is to the toilet. The bathroom can be closed off with blue curtain or for those inclined, one can sit on the sofa and watch someone shower through the glass (if they are so inclined). Also, for fresh air freaks, two of our windows opened.

There is a beautiful WunderBar downstairs off the main lobby and another bar on the mezzanine level. On the weekend there was a large crowd of people but during the week it didn't seem that crowded at all. Not like the W in Mexico City which seemed to be the after work destination for many.

The restaurant, Otto, was not open during our stay. We left on Tuesday afternoon and the official Grand Opening was scheduled for that evening with over 800 people on the guest list. I'm disappointed I didn't get to check out the restaurant.

If I am not mistaken, the hotel manager is a native from Montreal, but has recently been employed by the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. She seemed very together and greeted us when we first checked in and throughout our stay, even with her busy schedule due to the upcoming Grand Opening. The staff was both friendly and beautiful...in that W way. Only this time they speak French which is always especially cool in my book.

There was no Starbucks near by, but there were several coffee shops within a few blocks walk. A terrific sushi bar/Japanese restaurant, Soto, is three blocks down and another great and highly rated restaurant, Le Cube is about five blocks. I never found the nearest sundry store. Our bags didn't arrive with us the first evening and we asked for complimentary toothpaste/ toothbrushes but was told they didn't have any "free" amenities. With no sundry store nearby, and without an overcoat and it being 20 degrees, I purchased it from the hotel at a cost of $12CAD. The tube was dinky. Not even the travel size, dinkier than that. I thought it was a bit much but I didn't have any alternatives other than bad breath in the morning.

For first time visitors like me, the Metro is efficient, clean and easy to use. After we got the hang of it, we took it one evening to the Casino and during the day all around the city. For a native Californian, it was a bit chilly, but it was expected. Temperatures during our stay were apparently above normal and it was probably about 40F during the day...after the first day being somewhere in the upper 20's/low 30's.

Taxi fare back to the airport was set at $31CAD.

I hope to someday get back to Montreal during the spring when it's not so cold.

Nice report, I have to take my wife to W bar one of these week ends.

I hope to someday get back to Montreal during the spring when it's not so cold.

The best time to visit Montreal is from mid-June (Air Canada Grand Prix week end) to mid-Oct (the end of fall folliage). There are lots of festivals in the summer : Jazz Festival, Just for laughs festival, Francopholie (french music festival).

On the other note, I am surprised how crazy people are about W hotels. I have been asked many times by New Yorkers when W Montreal opens. and I keep telling them that there are a lot more and better boutique hotels in Montreal : Place d'Armes Hotel (with Nava restaurant), Hotel St.Paul (with Le Cube restaurant), Le St. James (somebody spend $500K last summer here on a suite), Hotel Nelligan, Hotel Gault.

I spent one night at the W back in October during its opening. Since the hotel was still in pre-opening mode, my experience was fractional.

I had booked a Welcome Package rate which included cocktails, welcome gift (http://www.icecider.com/) and triple SPG points. Hotel staff seemed very diligent and eager to assist, albeit there were few guests at the time, 20 I was told. At check-in I was asked if I would like to be upgraded. I wondered if this was a new Platinum procedure or a trick question? I answered yes anyways. Clerk then asks if he can go ahead and charge the $75 to my cc. At first I was confused, but then remembered that the Welcome Package had an offer to upgrade to an Suite Urbaine for $75 from the rate. "If I say no, do I still get an upgrade?" I asked. He replied that Platinums would normally get an Urban Suite upgrade, yet at this time, due to the Wlcm Pkg. offer, they are limited and only available to those who pay the $75. I guess all 20 guests had opted for the upgrade. I figured if I book a room next month and get upgraded at no charge, why pay now? So I declined and was given a Mega room (422-486 sqft) instead. (This is the room show on the SPG site with the signature blue curtain) View was of square Victoria. Nonetheless, Platinums can expect Urban suites, Golds Mega as upgrades.

Also, I was told that the bottle of ice cider might be one of the options of the Plat. Amenities or just added to part of their menu. The bottle was great, as I picked up two more at the SAQ (Quebec liquor store)

Many of the hotel services were still under construction and closed. Grand Opening was on Nov.16 as posted by the OP. Fitness/Spa (SWEAT), restaurants (Otto and Plateau), room service and parking were all not available. Well, room service was, "just not that day." The Wunderbar lounge was. The Wunderbar is a sunken lounge just off the lobby (or aka Living Room) and runs to about 4am. The lounge was packed on opening night along with a crowd outside lining to get in. Had to bypass the line and show room key to security to get into the hotel and elevators every time. Mix of young urbanites and those from the surrounding business district filled the lounge and lobby area. Great staff and decor at the Wunderbar, though Montreal is home to some of the best lounges out there, and many not far from the hotel.

Plateau is on the mezzanine level and overlooks onto the open, very rouge lobby. Breakfast is served here and used as a happy hour bar during the week. (Again, was supposed to open "just not that day.")

Overall, as mentioned previously, if you're W fan, expectations will be met, though not exceeded. The area, square Victoria, should be familiar with those who had stayed at the IC nearby, in the area of Old Montreal and not far from downtown. The Gare Central which is serviced by VIA trains and Airport Express buses is about a 10min walk or a $5 cab ride.

Again, stay was limited and hopefully can give a more detailed report the next time around.

My sentiments exactly, however I do like the lounge scene a the W Hotels, but am not crazy about the rooms. The quality of the rooms' furnishings are questionable, my colleagues like to refer to the W Hotels as Crate & Barrel Hotels, they also don't like the glass bathroom doors. Thank God the W Montréal has at least a curtain, maybe that's only in the suites? Speaking of curtains, I haven't seen black-out curtains in their rooms which drives me crazy during leisure stays.

BTW, I've also heard good comments about Hôtel Le St. Paul (http://www.hotelstpaul.com/), although I've never stayed there myself.

This is my first post on the Starwood forum. I was searching for feedback on the new W Montreal as my wife and I are staying there while in Quebec this weekend, but have so far come up empty. If anyone has been up there, how does it measure up? How is the hotel restaurant Otto? How generous were they with upgrades, etc.? I have stayed at Hotel Gault on previous visits and they are great, but since I'm a gold making a go at platinum membership this year, I feel wedded to the starwood option in town. I've booked a mega room and am hoping for at least an urban suite upgrade from this. And since, if you're replying, you've been to Montreal lately, maybe you may have some restaurant recommendations.
THanks,

Otto didn't get the best write up in the local papers.... I have been there myself and found it very very expenisive and I eat out 3 or 4 times a week. I think you can do better with several restos on Blvd St. Laurent. PM me if you need specifics.

As for the W, if you can score a WOW Suite upgrade you are in for a real treat. I am a little taken back that many rooms do not have a wall seperating the bathroom (except for toliet) that is in a little room to itself) just a plain blue curtain. Location of the hotel is reasonable. You'll need to taxi it to most places or use public transit. Summer time visitors will find the area a little more pleasent.

How did you do on the rate? Its one of the most expensive hotels in town.

My rate was 199CDN and I upgraded to a mega for 1500 points. There are better deals to be had, I'm sure. I think I may try Bronte one evening over at Le meridien. Most of the reviews were a little more consistently positive. I love Montreal and I think it'll be my last visit for a while, so I'm trying to make the most of it. Thanks.

Mar 16, 05, 10:16 am
I just wanted to follow up on my experience. The W has a great lobby and great beds, like most other W's, and the Otto restaurant was better than some of its reviews. However, my service experience was spotty at best, which just reaffirmed my worst preconceptions about the W chain. I booked a mega room, and was told at check-in I had been upgraded to a Mega! Lucky me! Anyhow, I pressed on whether an urban suite may be available and they said yes for 50 cdn, and I thought the rate was reasonable so I accepted. (This might be a good chance to add this place just kills you with hidden charges, including a 150 cdn fee for my wife's tiny dog.)
The "urban suite" is nothing more than a large, attractive room. There is nothing but a curtain separating the entire room from the bathroom. I've never been in a suite where I can so definitively say there is no privacy! The view was of a bank next door (lots of windows). The shower flooded the bathroom and the bathtub leaked onto the carpet. The living area and bedroom are separated by a collapsing half-wall. Room service prices for dessert and some water were outrageous (32 cdn for a piece of tiramisu!)
Anyhow, we were booked for one night and having plenty of fun in snowy montreal so we decided to extend our stay and didn't want to switch hotels. I booked a second night using cash and points the next morning and went downstairs to ask if we had to switch rooms. The nice woman at the front desk said I would, and I did not mind. I ask if I'll have to pay the pet fee again and she says, no, I'll make sure you don't. Half an hour later, still in my old room, with my coat on ready to finish moving my last bag with my wife, I get a call from the manager. She explained i will have to pay a pet fee again (125$) so maybe I'd just like to stay in my suite and pay the upgrade. I explained I'd already moved my bags, but she was unaccommodating and said, well, I'll have to charge you again. Now I wouldn't mind but when the person at the desk makes a mistake, just let it go, as if my 12 lb well-behaved dog is going to cost $250 to clean up after. But not here. I complain and finally get to stay in my room, so I go recover my bags from the room I was moving to by myself, and bring it back to the "suite."
The day passes and the next morning I get a ten page bill littered with billing errors. A bill that should have been 600cdn for 2 days (with some drinks and extra charges that I keep careful track of) came out to 817cdn. This is not the worst of it. My credit card was littered with so many authorizations (they ran one 150 cdn authorization 4 times, among others), that a card with nothing else on it had 1700 cdn reserved off of it (almost 1000 cdn in extra authorizations). On my bill, my cash and points rate was not recognized and i was charged a higher rate for a sunday stay than I had been charged for the Saturday before. At least, when I checked, they had not deducted my points. Anyhow, after much haggling and their attempt to contact starwood, they still did not remedy the situation and I agreed to pay the higher rate because they offered me a points compensation and had not taken my other points. I am told they'll follow up with an email. Two days - no email. I called and they said they'd repair their mistake. The next thing I know, the 4000 pts ARE DEDUCTED and they call me to tell me they'll credit me back the difference and give me a gift of 1000 pts. Like that makes this all better.
I'm very tired of hidden and not so hidden fees when i travel. None of this money has been returned to my account yet. I am tiring of W and starwood in general. My wife and I are planning to travel up the california coast after the bar exam and i have at least 5 starwood reservations I am thinking about scrapping. Maybe some other chain would appreciate my business and not offer me 1000 pts that'll probably never show up when they butcher my bill and sack me with hidden charges.
I hate writing this because I sound like such a complainer, but I really rarely complain about service at hotels. Montreal has so many great hotels to offer for that size of city and I felt bad for not spending my money at one of them (le st james, gault, le saint sulpice). I picked the W out of brand loyalty and really am beginning to question the need, since I am a gold member who will likely fall a few stays short of Platinum this year again anyhow.
Long story short, Montreal has better choices than the W and unless they learn how to treat customers, I don't know how they'll survive. I talked to a manager about the extreme suites and asked whether platinums were ever upgraded, and she said platinums were never upgraded to wow or extreme suites, because they were mostly reserved for modelling shoots and fabulous parties. Give me a break! I have reservations at the St. Regis Monarch Beach, W San Diego, W San Francisco and Palace Hotel among other Starwood properties in the next 4-6 months and I'm wondering it I should expect more of the same.

Welcome to flyertalk JZ!

I wouldn't expect the same. Luckily I've never experienced your treatment like you had these last few days. I was very surprised about them charging you for your dog! I need to look into who charges and who doesn't in the future!

All of the properties that you mentioned above are fantastic in their own right. I'm not a fan of the Palace Hotel, but I think you'll like all the above hotels. The California vibe is so much easier than Montreal. While Montreal is a beautiful city in some ways, there are people there who think it's the ONLY city worth being in.

I go to Montreal about 6 times a year for the last 10 years. I have had unpretentious Montreal visits, and very pretentious Montreal visits (without the W hotel). Add potential W pretension in the mix, and you're taking a gamble. ;)

Timely thread... the girlfriend and I are headed up to Montreal this weekend for an award stay (free wknd nights). I would've rather JZdrilich had a great trip so I have something to look forward to, but now I guess I'll keep my expectations in line with the amount I'm paying for the room ;)

I do have one thing going for me (since it seems that being Platinum won't be)--a good buddy of mine who stayed here a few months back put in a good word for me with a front desk attendant he became very friendly with after a recent stay there :D. Supposedly a suite is lined up... but I will report back with a detailed trip report early next week.

For those of you that know Montreal well, a few questions:
1) How is the area around the hotel? What can I expect to be in walking distance? (I've stayed at the Le Centre Sheraton before which I thought was very well located)
2) A recommendation for a romantic restaurant (preferably in the $80-$100US range, but I'm negotiable since it is her b'day)
3) We would like to go out to a nice lounge/club at night after dinner. A cool place that plays hip-hop, dance, etc. would be fun for us.
4) An economical place to park nearby the hotel, and while in Montreal, best way to get from point A to point B.
5) Finally, any links to websites similiar to citysearch.com, timeout.com, etc. that cover Montreal.
Thanks!

As for restaurants, I mentioned Ristorante bronte, which is located in Le meridien. It was a very good experience. Entrees are all in the 30-40 cdn range, with starting courses between 10-25cdn and desserts another 10-12 cdn. The waiter brought out a gift from the chef between courses. I liked it because there were a lot of indigineous sort of things (oxtail, venison). It was definately striving for chic. Another favorite closer to your hotel is Chez l'Epicier. They have a little upscale grocery inside and it is a little less expensive. The menus are printed on brown paper bags. It is in Old Montreal and the location is very romantic. On a happier note about the W, Otto was very good for drinks, dessert, and breakfast (can't speak to dinner). Funny, Otto was nearly empty at prime-time dinner hours.
I hear good things about Renoir in the Sofitel, which has a 40cdn set menu for dinner. If you want a splurge, I've been to Toque! and it is the best Montreal has to offer but I feel like it doesn't match culinary institutions like jean georges and daniel. I like Chez L'Epicier because I feel like it isn't trying to emulate a new york restaurant and is plenty happy to be a fine Quebecois establishment. This is becoming a rarity up there.
The W is located on Victoria Square around a bunch of banks. In fact, it was a bank. It is on the border of Old Montreal and you can walk to Notre Dame in 10 minutes or so. If you want a cheap bite for breakfast, we had a nice meal at Eggspectation about three blocks away for 25cdn.
i found the location very good. I took cabs to Sherbrooke area establishments though, but you could just as easily pop in the metro (the station is right outside the W's doors).
Hope you have a wonderful trip. The W itself is an attractive hotel, the rooms look great, but i wouldn't expect a lot of privacy. I don't know, but I really like a door between the bathroom and the room. This curtain thing does not work for me. For a frame of reference, my wife and I are 27 and 26, respectively, and we try to keep an open mind but it was a little too "fabulous" and short on practical touches for us. We love modern design and the room had a cool oversized couch, but the electric blue curtains in all directions were a little bright. I wouldn't call it minimalist. The bathroom was attractive and the shower was grrreat. The rainshower dropped from about 14 feet up providing for some great pressure. Still, I slightly prefer the Hotel gault, which is modern but with concrete floors (heated in the bathroom) and tall ceilings, balconies and other touches.
I hear Le St. James is FANTASTIC. Maybe next time.

I tried to warn you about the curtains.... St. James is great, perhaps the best in town, but totally different than W.

W is a work in progress I suppose... Hotel Godin is also worth checking out, but they have no resto currently and no booze permits from the government.

Places I'd generally rather stay...

In no particular order...

Auberge du vieux-port
Le Saint Sulpice
Le Saint James
Hotel Nelligan
Hotel Place d' Armes
Hotel Gault
Hotel Le Germaine
Hotel St. Paul

All of them have been excellent hotels for me.

I've never been to Hotel Godin.

IMHO, Barry Sternlicht's W is late to the party here, and trying to prove it can hang with the originals. I think the W missed the mark, and comes off as being late to the party, and missing the point.

If it wasn't free, I wouldn't go there... Luckily, most of the time it is for me, but placing the hotel at 10,000 points sure does make it more difficult to stay there over the Sheraton down the street.

I have to say I am surprised by the comments I have read about the W Montreal in this thread. I personally am a big fan of the W chain, its unexpected and different than the usual hotel experiences, which is so refreshing and the whole point of choosing it over a Sheraton. I thought the open bathroom concept and room layout and the W Montreal was novel, it was not your standard room layout with the enclosed bathroom on your right as you walk in. The flow of the room into the bathroom made the room seem that much bigger too. However, the Wonderful rooms (we had a Spectacular, friends had a Wonderful) do have that typical bathroom setup.....but the bathroom and bedroom are seperated by the shower and the wall in between the shower and bedroom is just glass (very voyeur!). I could see how this might bother some people, but I thought it was fun. If cutting-edge, unexpected design is something that has the potential to bother you or make your stay uncomfortable, then maybe the local Marriott or Sheraton is the right way to go. As for me, I choose hotels that are going to have something I would never even think to have in my own home, its part of what makes travel different and exciting.

As far as service goes, I usually look the other way with the W hotel's bit*hy attitude, especially in NY where most hotel staff are that way. Not to say that I think it is acceptable, but I just don't let it ruin my stay. However, after my many W stays, I have to say that the staff in Montreal were BY FAR the most friendly, courteous, and helpful staff I have ever encountered at any W. From the moment our car pulled up, they swarmed us and grabbed our bags, they made sure we did not lift a finger. Check in was swift, and they offered everyone coffee and bottles of water while I was checking in. Any time we were waiting in the lobby for the car to be brought around, again they came running over with bottles of water and coffee. And all of this was complimentary.

We had also made special arrangements for a birthday event through the concierge before arrival, and it was as if the whole hotel staff knew all about it, and kept asking how everything went. I was actually amazed that the entire staff knew who we were, I have only encountered such exceptional service like that in Asia. The concierge also had great reccommendations for food, bars, etc. and was so nice, her name is Mireille and you should definitely pay her a visit if you are staying at the W.

The location of the hotel is completely walkable to the entire Old Montreal district as well, within 2 blocks you are in the district. A great place for sandwiches and pastries that I read about is called Olive & Gourmondo. We ate there one day, it was fantastic. Its mentioned in this article which is also great info on Montreal:
http://travel.guardian.co.uk/countries/story/0,7451,1287486,00.html

Other than that, Montreal is a fun city and anyone going there will have a great time!

Just got back from a Sunday-night stay at the W Montreal, and thought I would provide a a quick summary of the experience.

Overall I would try it again assuming I got a decent rate. I found a promo for CDN$219 including continental breakfast, and while high for the city it was generally good value for money.

On the service and facilities side, they had some issues. Both on checkin and the next morning I had problems with room keys. The keys they gave me at checkin didn't work for the room, so I had to go back down to checkin to get more. Then the next morning the elevators were set to require a room key swipe to activate any of the buttons. I couldn't go back up to my room and the staff was unable to make them work with their own keys. I was escorted to my room up the service elevator (a creative solution to a problem and I appreciated the quick thinking). It appears the keys give them frequent problems. Finally on checkout I waited in line for about five minutes behind another guest at the one open reception station. Other W staffers milled about and wandered past but no-one manned a second station until about 5 minutes later.

My room (not a suite upgrade) was comfortable, quiet and large. Unlike some reports above I had a wall & door separating the bedroom from the bathroom. The "rain" shower is great, but make sure you are good friends with whoever shares your room -- one shower wall is lightly tinted glass overlooking the rest of the bedroom. Lets in lots of light and generally great design.

At checkin they make you sign a very unusual waiver concerning what activities are not permitted in the room (e.g. cooking, hot plates, open flames, big parties, and other veiled references to x-rated movie shoots). They said there had been some "problems" in the last few months. Interesting...

The staff was generally very helpful and attentive on most matters.
My free continental breakfast at Otto was fantastic quality and the coffee was great.

Just back from 3 nights at the W in Montreal (and one each at the 4 points and Sheraton - I got the double stay promo!). This is a great hotel. The staff are really nice, helpful and genuinely want to make your stay enjoyable. We loved the rooms, I forget what we had but it was big, and the open bathroom concept - yes, it helps if you are a couple :) The bars are nice, though not as busy as some other W's - which I found ok. Didnt try Ottos as not fans of Italian, but do go to L'Epicier on St Paul which is awesome. The area around is quiet, but you can get to the Metro via the basement of the hotel which is nice. At check out we got 2 bottles of Voss, hot towels etc. Very, very nice. We have stayed at a lot of W's and this is one of the best. Go there and love it! Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.
Oh yeah, we were on the Pride rate as it was the cheapest :) The staff were great and we got a load of really nice other W stuff once we kind of hinted we were actually married.

I'm off to YUL at the end of this month and have a choice of Starwoods for the two nights:

Le Centre Sheraton @ $ 150 per night
W @ $299 per night on the shopping package (Wonderful room)
4ptsCentre-Ville @ $ 145 per night
I've never stayed at the W before, and have read conflicting reports on it above. So:

-Is it worth the supplement to try the W? (I have plat status.)

-Has anyone stayed on this W Shopping package before. I'm just wondering what the goodies (Matt-Murphy wallet and bag etc) are like...

-And is the location of the W in Old Montreal close to the IC or somewhere else

Hard to say. As a plat you will likely get a Mega room and possibly an offer to upgrade to an Urban suite for a price. As for $299, better deals can be found, even at this hotel, yet it is a ‘weekend shopping' rate. The last time I was there, the front desk was pushing this package to guests. They were selling it as an ‘upgrade package' for an additional $100/night. I think high_flyer does a good job in listing better alternatives to the W. As for the 4pts, the only reason to stay there at that rate is maybe for the 4k promo, while the Sheraton always remains a safe bet.

Has anyone stayed on this W Shopping package before. I'm just wondering what the goodies (Matt-Murphy wallet and bag etc) are like...
Haven't stayed on the rate, but have seen it. The wallet is the one shown the MM website as the pouchwallet. The bag contains certs/coupons for Armani, Yurman, bloomingdales, sirius, w store etc., mostly ranging from 15-25% off purchases. The "cocktails and nibbles for two" is just a small bottle of wine with a plate of cheese/crackers.

And is the location of the W in Old Montreal close to the IC or somewhere else
Very close. Only about a block or two east of the W along rue St-Antoine.

Do you have an idea as to how long it would take to walk from the W to the Eaton Centre or to Holt Renfrew?

Also, are they any cafes' or takeout joints or a 7-11 or something close to the W? (Based on the posts above, food and drink is rather exorbitantly priced at the hotel!)

If you walk straight north from the W for about 5 minutes, you hit are in the heart of the shopping district on Ste Catherine. There are decent cafes in that area too.

Oh yeah, and umm, the Eaton Centre is in Toronto. That's a long long walk from the W Montreal :)

Well actually there are structures that formerly held Eaton's/Eaton/eatons stores still bearing the moniker Eaton Centre or slight varitions of that in Montreal and Guelph and possibly some other places as well as Toronto.

Holt Renfrew, in my guess, would be about a 30min walk on foot (ymmv), espically since it's uphill from the W. The Eaton Centre in Montreal is about half the distance of HR, just go north along University to Ste-Catherine. Many cafes and take-out nearby the W.

SST
May 8, 05, 9:28 pm
Take a cab up to the corner of Ste-Catherines and de la Montagne; I think that's Holt-Renfrew's location. It's about C$6 (less than US$5). It isn't a bad walk, probably 20 min. If it's raining, go into the CN Gare Central and work your way thru the underground city all the way up to SteCatherines, and you've gone about halfway in dry and a/c comfort, plus you've had a couple or three escalators to save you the walk up the "hill" (not really too steep, but uphill nevertheless).

Holt-Renfrew is a great store.

I haven't stayed at the "w" yet, but this discussion is making me look forward to seeing for myself. Can't say I am too excited about a C$299 rate though: that would be the most I think I've ever spent on a hotel in Montreal, and I've been there about 40 times. Not sure it could ever be worth that.

I know that if I had a choice of $169 for the Le Centre Sheraton or $299 for the "W", the "W" would get no more than one night, even though it is much more convenient to my business in Old Montreal.

I LOVE THE W MONTREAL!

I have stayed there twice this year and plan atleast two more. It is in a decent location - sort of in the middle of everyhting - making it wasy to catch a cab or even walk if you so desire.

Yes it can be a little slow there service wise, bu typically it's not.l The staff is totaly awesome and more than willing to help. Michelle is an AWESOME manager and so is the entire Concierge staff, they made my two stays extremely awesome.

Both times I have stayed in an Urban Suite (so much for an upgrade.. I hate small rooms and always book suites) - only things up are like presidential type suite. I like the Urban Suite... the bathroom is an expereince with only a blue curtain. My friend and I definately had fun.

They are more than willing to run and do anything for you. all you need to do is ask and be nice.

AJLondon. Hope you chose the W in the end. It is worth the extra $$. The 4 points is in major need of refurbishment, which I think it is presently getting. Staff were very nice, but it is the first Starwood in some time I really didnt like - felt old and very worn. Guessing I have been spoilt by the 4 points in YVR, SYD and Geelong :)
The Sheraton is a perfectly nice Sheraton. Big, anonymous hotel. Nothing about it really, but fine in all respects. Lounge is nice.
The W is special though, a hotel that you really enjoy spending time in - whether in your room or public areas. You can also get right to the metro from the basement of the hotel through a key accessed door which is nice. Sure you will have a great stay.

Figured I'd rehash this thread since my question is quite specifically about this hotel....

I booked a "Cozy" room on the Canadian sale a couple of months out. I know that the Cozy room is frighteningly small but I couldn't pass up the CDN $138 rate :) My question is, as a lowly Corporate Preferred, what am I entitled to as far as upgrade to a Preferred room? Would I be entitled to at least a "Wonderful" room, assuming they weren't sold out of them at checkin? I don't know what other Preferred room there could be as a step up from Cozy.

If the answer is that they have no obligation to upgrade out of a Cozy for a Corp. Pref. even if they have availablity, does anyone know what rooms you get at this property for the 1,000 and 1,500 point upgrades? (assuming they have the Instant Upgrade awards)

Let me first start that by saying I've tried W's before and have always found them "interesting". They are trendy/chic and a little out there. Also I think we were the oldest guests in the hotel. (We're early 50's)

That being said, we just came back from Montreal after having three great nights at the W. We drive from BOS to YUL for the Jazz Fest. Last year we stayed at the Sheraton Le Centre, where we were upgraded (we're PLT), and treated very well, but they were full for July 1, so we booked the W. We were planning on using points for the three nights but with the Canada sale(138$ CAD) it didn't make sense, so our first two nights were points (spectacular room) and our third was supposed to be a cozy room. They were booked under two reservations.

When we got to the hotel, check in went flawlessly. Katie upgraded our spectacular room to a mega room. She offered the PLT amenity without even asking, asked if we wanted a newspaper delivered every morning and then gave us a choice of four. I informed her about our second reservation, and she tied them together. When asked if we would have to move, she said no.

The room was large. Now I understand about the blue curtain and the open bathroom. Yes there is no privacy when showering or bathing, but after being married 32 years who cares. The sink vanity was large enough for two people to use at the same time. The shower was also large enough for two and had a ceiling rain head. I prefer the wall mounted double head at Westin's but when in Rome.....

The bed was great. ^ The pillows were soft, the comforter was down but not overly heavy. The fake mink coverlet was a trip. The only issue we had was we were given an inside room. The window faced another building and above the mezzanine bar, so there wasn't much light. The next day, I asked if we could have an outside room, and Marleen came through. Same megaroom only with three large windows facing the square. Lots of light, very cheery.

The conceirge Patrick was very helpful, although we always had to wait a while to be served. Calling the conceirge from outside the hotel was also a problem. We were put into voicemail and the call was never returned. However after the second time of being sent to voicemail (30 minutes later), I phoned the front desk, explained the situation and was connected directly to Patrick .

At check out the lines were long, and as our bill was correct, we just left. All in all the stay was great. Where would we stay the next time we go to YUL - the Sheraton or W? The W definitely.

As an aside - parking at the W is 30$ CAD, but at an outside lot a block and half away on Rue de Vigre it was 10$ CAD. We also had breakfast at Eggspectations on Rue St. Jacques, after the first day of breakfast at OTTO.

One last point. Late Saturday night we stopped in the Wonder Bar for a nightcap. We had to show our room key to get in. Once in there was no place to sit - all the tables were reserved. The mezzanine bar was more accessible.

I checked in on the 6th for 1 night. As a newly minted platinum (on a comp to my Hilton Diamond but they could see I had about 10 nights booked already and had a couple of stays earlier in the year on corp rates), was upgraded from Cozy to a wonderful room overlooking the square on a $138 Canada sales rate. I was preferred plus before when I made the reservation and it sounded as if they were going to leave in my the Cozy as a preferred but when realizing that I recently became Plat, they came through with a nicer room. The size of the room was nice but not critical but the view was excellent. Plat amenity I choose the black fabric W bag and it came in handy a few days later... Had meant to get up early to try breakfast at Otto but oversleep after visiting the Jazz festival so paid as quickly as I can and hopped into a taxi. Will be back again end of this month and see how it is on a proper stay...

Just got back on Monday the 13th from Montreal after the jazz fest also. Stayed at the W on Wednesday and Thursday on a $269 rate w/a goody bag including Bliss products, a W CD, flip flops and a W bag. Spent Friday and Saturday on points, and stayed the night at the 4 pts by the airport for a 7:15 AM flight.

I have stayed at W Atlanta, Seattle, Times Square, Union Square, San Francisco, Chicago City Center, Chicago Lakeshore and Westwood. I'd say this is one of the better W's out there for overall enjoyment of the weekend although not as convient for general 'discovery' as its not so "city center" as the others.

Upon checkin they confirmed my rate of $369, which I stated was incorrect. After going upstairs to find my documentation, came back and they adjusted the room the $100. Was Plat. upgraded to a Mega Suite on the 7th floor overlooking Victoria Square. Nice rooms, luscious beds with a fur cover and pillows. Huge bathtub that fits two nicely (I'm 6'5 and was comfortable even eith Mrs. High_flyer :)) Large shower area with a "rain" showerhead. Toilet was in seperate closet. As always the hotel beds had the feather top, and pillows were glorious and comfy. The rooms do feel large and comfortable, but no room to take people back to really.

The hotel is on the northwest side of "Old Montreal" and you feel more among banks and the Bell Tower building then the Notre Dame Cathedral area the "boutique" hotels in the c. 1800 buildings like St. James or St. Sulpice. Metro right outside the front, and underground access to Palais d' Congress and tunnels for the winter if you care to travel to Montreal in the winter.

Valet parked the first day, but found alternative parking the following days for slightly cheaper.

Found all the people to be very friendly and non-pretentious (anglophiles). Mrs High_Flyer and I went to the Wonderbar after the Jazz Fest on Friday, sat at a "reserved table" when only about 10 people were in the bar, and found no problems from anyone there even without bottle service. Nice DJ around 11 pm. Packed by midnight w/wall to wall people. Met lots of nice fun loving people and wobbled out at 1:30 AM or so. Didn't have any bar problems like others have posted. Smoking is de rigueur in Montreal, so be prepared for smoke wherever you go. On the wine list they only had two reds including a very average syrah. There aren't very many other clubs or activities around the area, so it's the kind of place you come back to after a night on the town. The upstairs bar (Plateau) was nice and mellow compared to the more club like downstairs vibe. Due to high ceilings, much less smoky.

Saturday was rainy and _beautiful_ in old Montreal. Seems more "old world" when it's raining. More "Lon Chaney-ish" actually. W loaned us two umbrellas for the day, which was very nice. No real grocery stores around which means we needed to walk to find cheap water for the room.

I think the place is a bit on the expensive side, but very nice. The Sheraton on Sherbrooke is also very nice, with nice outdoor cafe seating and reasonable rates. Sherbrooke is a very nice street and actually is closer to the jazz fest and Crescent st. and St. Catherines and St. Laurent. If you're not there for the beds, I'd stay on Sherbrooke.

Ate at the venerable "Schwartz's" deli on St. Laurent and they were filming a documentary for CBC or something while there. Ate at Mediteranneo, Sofia and Kaizen Treetop with excellent meals. Ate at Boris Bistro another night. Ate at Eggspectations. Always good food in Montreal.

I'd recommend the place again, but after all the TPS/GPS taxes, city taxes etc, it gets a little hefty at the .83 CND exchange rate. HSE is $20/day. Phone is $1.50. They are definitely proud of their rates, although even during Jazz fest the place didn't seem that busy.

If you are not a Canadian you are allowed to claim back the TPS/TVQ. Call the hotel and ask them to fax you the forms. Or try a google search.

Got one of those "Thanks for staying at the W we would like to know how your stay was." Not one of those horrible surveys, but the email from the hotel itself. So I clicked on the link and emailed the GM telling what a great stay I had. How the staff was helpful, and so one. I did recommend that they hire another conceirge on weekends as the lines were always long.

I also told them to come to FT and read what is posted about the hotel so they will get true opinions of the facility and service. This is her response:

Bonjour,

We thank you for your suggestions and are in the process of hiring a third concierge so that should help to reduce the line up
on weekend. We will check for the comments in the flyertalk.com for now on.

We look forward to see you again in Montreal

I stayed at the W over the Jazz Fest and was upgraded from a Cozy ($139.00) to Mega room prior to arrival. So anything is possible. At the Hyatt near the Jazz Fest, there were people picketing around the entrance almost everyday. Didn't see any activity at the W. Good luck with the upgrade and have fun!

even though i live in montreal i couldn't pass up the canada day special so i booked the $138 rate for a cozy room for one night. as a mere gold i was upgraded to a Wonderful room on the 7th floor with a nice view of the square.

this was my first stay ever at a W and i admit i wasn't prepared for the hotel's aversion to light. my little daughter didn't like the dark hallways and elevators and we had to comfort her because she started crying in the elevator :(

but once we got in the room we were welcomed with a blast of sunlight. the room is not big but it was comfortable for two people and an infant. like others have noted you can't really visualize the "open concept" bathroom until you actually see it for yourself. i didn't like the shower though, even though it's big i'd prefer if they had made full use of the space and put a combination shower/tub there instead.

the bouncer-types in front of the entrance were a bit intimidating at first but they were very friendly and helped my wife carry the stroller up and down the stairs. in the morning we did a leisurely 10 minute stroll to chinatown for breakfast, and then the wife and baby went back to the hotel for a mid-day nap until checkout at 2pm.

all in all we thoroughly enjoyed our one-night stay there, and would highly recommend this place for those looking for something other than your average run-of-the-mill hotel.

I wanted to add my two cents as my wife and I had a horrible experience at the W Montreal. We have warned off many friends who thought of staying there. The staff from front desk to management is pretty much incompetent. Most of the food at Otto was good when when it finally made its way to the table.
It is probably, in my mind, one of the most overwhelmingly bad hotel experiences. There were errors on the bill, errors with room service, problems with housekeeping and a general manager who could not be bothered to reply to inquiries about the problems that were reported during and after the stay.
I am a big Starwood fan but on the Montreal W I have to step in so that others don't face a similar fate. Be warned and expect to be underwhelmed by the sparkling level of uncorrected incompetence.

The concierge at the W was fantastic. We got Patrick to help us with restaurant recommendation and reservation, and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. You may want to send him an email prior to your arrival for suggestions. There seems to be one festival after another throughout the entire summer in the city.

If this is your first time in Montreal, the W is located right on the edge of the old town. Lots of fascinating history and beautiful architecture, as well as several museums. We got a book that has several walking tours of the area that was very easy to follow along and enjoyed a half day roaming in the old port city. Le Jardin Nelson right in the center of old town has excellent outdoor dining with great Crepes and Pizza. It's the only restaurant I can recall that is worthy of recommendation. I spent most of my time there last time hanging out at the Jazz Fest, drinking beer and eating hot dogs. Hopefully you'll get other great recommendations.

Hope you will enjoy your stay in Montreal!
May be a good start would be to look at the Montreal Tourism office web site;
http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/B2C/00/default.asp

You will find plenty of information of the City.
Restaurants recommendations,
Well there is a lot of good restaurants in Montreal.
Some of the restaurants in the old Montreal are tourist oriented so ask for advice before heading there if you want a real good experience.

Personnal choice: Chez l'épicier, near marché Bonsecours.
Make sure you stop at Notre-Dame one of the most beautiful church in North America. (also close to the W) There is plenty to see in Montreal. PM if you need more advice or recommendations.

Stayed here this weekend. I got a $135CDN rate during the Canada Day promotion for a cozy, but was upgraded to a Wonderful.

I am a big fan of the Ws, and wasn't disappointed in Montreal. The lobby was more inviting than other Ws, with interesting furniture and lighting, plus fresh orange juice in the evening. The room was very dark--my view was of an office building--but some inventive lighting made the room work. I was alone, so didn't mind the shower wall next to the bed, especially since the shower is one of the best ever. The bathroom is really large and while the Wonderful was smallish, it was fine for one person with a niced sized Armoire.

I found the staff to be efficient. The male models who they appeared to hire to work as bellman were always friendly and helpful and the room was always cleaned promptely and thoroughly.

I've stayed at the Sheraton Montreal and think this is a better location, especially if you want to spend time in Old Montreal.

Was also there this weekend and had a very nice stay. I would definitively recommend this property.. On an award stay, got upgraded to a mega room on the 9th floor. Loved the feel of the room, loved the bathroom, no view out (indoor building). Staff was very helpful and very friendly, only faux pas was from the concierge desk sending us to a japanese restaurant when we requested a thai restaurant.. oh well.. Location is very good, walking distance from all the attractions..

Was also there this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the stay although having booked a Cozy room during the Canada Day promo we were allocated ... a Cozy room. I had called in advance, had notations made, etc. but when we arrived (around 8pm) they said they were 100% full at that point and had nary a Wonderful/Spectacular/Mega room left to upgrade us to (as Gold). They agreed to move us if one came open Saturday or Sunday but were assured on Saturday nothing had opened. Apologized and said basically that if we'd arrived earlier in the day we'd have gotten a Wonderful. Shame they can't/don't block that and base it on arrival time but I suppose it makes sense. I admit I had convinced myself the odds were slim of getting stuck in the (reserved) Cozy room so that was a downer.

DCGuy & Couscous: What time did you arrive on Friday?

Anyway, my only minor complaint besides the shoebox sized room was the $30/nt Valet charge (no on-property self-park). I found a public lot around the corner and parked 2 days on the street for $16 total. $30 is a bit high and I *prefer* to Self Park.

The rest was spectacular. The location is superb (right in between St Catherine's area and Old Montreal). The decor is very hip and modern. The bathroom experience is certainly unique although I admit a prefer a bit more privacy! Wunderbar was undoubtedly a "Scene" on the weekend and was amusing to watch for a while :)

And the staff were all a pleasure... very professional and interested in the guests having a nice stay.

Overall ^ despite the Cozy room ;)

(I am trying to make platinum using just W Hotels this year...)

Arrived CONUS 2 JAN. Arrived with no reservations, Acela NYC-BOS. Did a 10k-point award stay at the BOS Copley, since they only had a $600/night rate available. Very nice hotel, friendly staff. I particularly appreciated the interconnection with the Prudential Center, Copley Plaza, etc., as this trip was totally unplanned (servers in SFO and NYC went down while I was in DXB, planning to go to HKG for a couple days, but I bought a ticket to JFK instead, with 30 minutes to spare...)

Rented an FX35 from Hertz; drove through the snow to Montreal. Got in very late, stayed at Sheraton Le something, as we'd arrived so late. Room was....manhattan sized, despite hotel being mostly empty, but it was adequate. Probably wouldn't stay in this hotel again, although I suppose it is ok as a conference hotel or just boring place to stay.

Went over to the W. Had a Mega room booked, was told that I could have had a free Spectacular->Mega upgrade, but not a Mega->Urban Suite. Oh well. Mega room was very nice.

I was with 2 other people (no comment), but they did not charge the extra guest fee. Maybe they were just used to it in that hotel, but I didn't get any hassle over the "interesting" aspect of this.

We went out to clubs/parties/etc. all day, and were back around 0300. Someone tried to take a bath, and she noted that the water would not stay in the bathrub, due to a problem with the drain. I confirmed. Called the w/w for an engineer, who came up quickly enough that she was barely bathrobed. Much amusement ensued, but he discovered that the drain plug had been installed upside down, and unscrewed/fixed it.

After making use of the (really nice) bath, relaxed for a while. Around 0500, I think there was another bath, and it was noted that there was no hot water. Again, confirmed, and called w/w. Engineer came, verified. Offered to upgrade us to an urban suite with hot water, but then discovered the ENTIRE HOTEL hot water system was offline. Took the upgrade to urban suite anyway. Still no hot water.

Tried to book another night online, but spg.com showed no availability. Called w's phone number from the hotel, and they were able to find a cheaper rate, which somehow they had but not online. No problem with me.

Hot water problems intermittently fixed, but never really totally fixed.

However, the really excellent w/w staff, combined with excellent club in the lobby (although I was a bit underdressed), interesting montreal party scene, etc. made it quite worthwhile. Discovering a metro entrance under the hotel made it that much better -- will definitely book another stay in March or May, although probably for a regular room, given their liberal upgrade policy for gold (and hopefully platinum, by then). I can also definitely recommend the W Montreal as a "party compatible" hotel; it seems like we were the most tame guests at the hotel, judging by the sounds coming through the relatively thin walls...

(drove back to Boston, did a night at the BOS Four Points (depressing), followed by a night at W The Court (excellent, but Union Square is probably better; the staff at W The Court were far better than the physical facilities), return to Dubai, and now at the DXB Four Points. I'm really looking forward to W Maldives, W Las Vegas, W Seoul Walker Hill, and dreaming of a W Dubai).

For those who knew her, Isabel Fagnan, the General Manager of this hotel left. Not sure who the new GM of this hotel is now, but she was a great GM and had very high standards for customer service. I hope the transition to a new GM upholds those standards and improves on areas where the hotel is currently lacking.

I got an upgrade, loved the room once I found it. Its a little too dark for me in the elevators as I tripped over several people during my stay who were trying to simply find their floors to press. The bar was happening but at my age, I wouldn't know any better. Breakfast was a little too much and slow..slow...slow.. I guess they didn't expect the 9 people who showed up that morning.

But comfort wise and room decor, I would put this hotel at right up there with the best.

Hi William! Well, just wanted to report back on my experience. I checked in today and was told that Urban Suites are NOT available for Platinum upgrade. They insisted that their Mega rooms are comparable to any standard suite at any other Starwood hotel. This was explained to me by the front desk agent, the hotel Whatever/Whenever operator and the manager on duty. :td:

Just out of curiosity, were you able to follow up on this issue a few weeks back? Any word on what transpired. FWIW, I hoped up my own case with Customer Service which I would gladly PM you if needed. I honestly hate doing this when I'm still at the hotel (gives me that uneasy feeling like when you complain at a restaurant before they serve your food).

Just to bump my own post - I got back to my room today about 10pm from work and saw the message indicator was lit. Had a VM from both the day manager and evening manager saying they had a corner Urban Suite on hold for me and to call down when I am ready to switch rooms.

My initial reaction was to ask what the problem was in the first place to which I was told that since they opened they have always been instructed to give Mega Rooms, not Urban Suites to Platinums as upgrades. The manager said something to the effect of Mega Rooms being marked as 'SS' in their system which they took to mean Standard Suites. He went on to say that they have now revised their procedures and will let it be known that Platinums should be upgraded to suites when available. We'll see (I check out this Friday and back in again on Sunday).

I spent a weekend at the W Montreal last month on the cash+points offer. We were upgraded to an Urban Suite on the 4th floor. At check-in the agent hinted to me that they usually try to upgrade SPG stays (I'm not a Plat or even Gold, yet), but in this case there were no Mega rooms left so we were lucky enough to be given a suite instead.

As a sidenote, just after checking in, their elevator decided to "crash", locking us and another couple inside for ~30 minutes. While noone likes to be stuck in an elevator, the situation was promptly and professionally handled by the staff. Josh, the duty manager, made sure that we were adequately compensated and called us later to apologise again and make sure that we were happy with our stay. We were credited with 10k SPG points and offered some free room service, which I was quite happy with.

The suite itself was great but I'm sure I would have been just as happy with a "Mega" room. It was large but I felt the space is not really utiltized all that well, with a large TV and one "long" sofa (funky, but not particularly practical/comfortable) placed in the centre of the room. It would be more of a real suite experience if it had a real sitting area, and the old style, non-flat TV didn't seem to fit in with the otherwise uber-modern, techie style of the place.

Still, we had a fantastic stay - its easily the best W experience of the several I have stayed at. Cool vibe, great staff, great location.

We are talking a short weekend trip to Montreal and can't decide between W and St. Paul Hotel. For those who've stayed there, could you please share some comments? W is supposedly 'close' to Old Town, while St. Paul is IN Old Town.

Also, is this W good with Platinum recognitions? It'd be nice to have a suite upgrade, otherwise, we're leaning towards St. Paul.

Can't comment on the St. Paul, but I like the W's location - its an easy walk of 5 minutes or so to the old town, and also right beside a metro stop. I was upgraded to a suite without any status, so I imagine they would be pretty good to Platinum's. I don't think there is a big difference between a Mega room and the suite I was given, though - its really just an over-sized room.

That's actually not quite 100% true and hopefully their policies have changed since my last stay (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5854675&postcount=27) ;).

Their service is generally very good and I didn't notice much of the 'we're holier than thou attitude' most folks have come to expect at other W's. I actually became quite friendly with the several of the managers and even spoke with the GM on a few ocassions.

The location is decent with not too much within the immediate proximity, except Toque! which happens to be one of the most highly rated restaurants in Montreal right behind the hotel. That being said, if you are open to walking 5-15 minutes, you can experience most of Old Montreal fairly easily.

St Paul and W are very close to each other..... In fact if you walk down McGill Street, which ends on Place Victoria (where W Hotel is) you will end up at the St Paul. Maybe 3 blocks apart at most. Neither are really interesting for a summer stay.

They hotel should be upgrading Plat's based on availability. If not, I would open a complaint with Customer Service.

mega room with a view #908

Gold Member---upgraded (free nights)

10 is the top floor....

Get a high floor to avoid loud music at night..

also, get a room not by the elevators, you hear all the drunks going to bed.

loved the hotel overall...

$30 a night (overall) w/points and free nights :)
---------
ps- you have to walk uphill to get to all the action or a $6 cab ride. St. Catherens street. Movie Theater in English $11 a flick. Also Imax, bars and restraunts.

The walk is not bad in the summer, I hate to do it when it is cold, if you can't physcally walk far, the loews hotel seemed nice and is the middle of it all.

I stayed there in May and was given an upgrade to a Mega WOW room - they don't do suite upgrades at this W as their only suites are not considered Std. Select Suites.

Is this still true? Has anyone stayed there recently?

Going to YUL for a conference in 2 weeks and will stay at the W....would love to receive a suite if one is available.....

What are "Standard Suites" at the W?

All I can see are "Fantastic Suite" for sale on the booking site. Did the hotel rename "Urban Suite" to "Fantastic Suite", or are they trying to play the change the name game so the "Urban Suite" is now called "Fantastic Suite" and is considered a "Specialty Suite" and therefore not applicable to Platinum upgrades?

William, Lurker, would you clarify please. Thanks.

Jkc22, I had a 2 night stay back in August and was only upgraded to a WOW room and not a suite. The hotel itself is a typical W brand - a bit of style but no substance.

The hotel did rename its Urban Suites to be Fantastic Suites and closed one, so there are now only 20, three of which are smoking preference. The Fantastic Suites are still on the SPG4SU rate plan for this property and would be eligible for Platinum elite member upgrades, subject to availability at arrival.

Thanks so much. :)

Looking forward to my stay (hopefully in a suite). Judging from the rates, seems like they are not running high occupancy at all.... ;)

$179CAD on weekends and weekdays is probably the lowest I've ever seen at a "premier" hotel in a major Canadian business city.

I am staying at the W Montreal next week. I just called the hotel to ask about the parking and they said it cost $31 to park. Is this true? This is kind of pricey for parking. I am from NYC and have no choice but to drive.

Yes, is about that much for the valet parking. You can also park elsewhere in the city in a garage if you want to save money. We were there for two nights and just used the valet parking for convenience, but there are other cheaper alternatives.

I think that's about how much I paid for valet parking too. I believe I read in another thread that on weekends you can actually park on the street for free or something. And indeed, as quinella66 pointed out, you can find self park close by for less. By valet was ever so convenient (and I still remember that morning when we checked out, and were about to drive away, the bell person rushed out from the hotel to give us two bottles of water for the road. Nice ^ ).

We were there last year and we drove from BOS. We parked 2 blocks away at an open air parking lot. I think it was $8 or $10 a day, much less than the W. Just drive around the neighborhood as there are lots around. We never took the car out of the lot until we were going home.

On a cash + points offer, I am offerred various duplicative rooms. Any ideas why? Don't want to pick the wrong, seemingly same, choice. Thanks!

I would also appreciate an explanation on why this sort of option screen comes up for on line award bookings. I presume its because standard rooms can still be subclassified (high floor, low floor, city view, garden view, etc.) However, if that's the case, one wonders why the detail screen wouldn't make some of that info available.

I booked an award this week at the U S Grant in SAN and noticed in the fine print, it appeared to have pulled out of ADA compliant inventory. WOW!! I'm certain that will change when I arrive (or long before), but interesting to note nonetheless. That info was in no way available to me throughout the booking process. Weird.

This has been true for a long time with online award bookings. Here's a similar thread from 2005...
Duplicate(?) rooms when redeeming - which to choose? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418207)

The codes that the OP asked about in this other thread is known as the Room Type Code, I think. And I think that this is just a selection from a sequential list of codes that have been used to group all of the rooms into their different classifications. I don't that there is any consistent meaning of the codes from one property to the next, though.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the hotels don't really follow these award assignments into ADA vs regular rooms. If they did, I would think that there would be a rash of complaints about how awards often get assigned irregular rooms. My understanding is that the ADA classification is ignored for online awards. If that's true, I don't know how SPG handles ADA awards in which a customer actually needs an ADA room.

OTOH, my own experience is jaded by the fact that I usually expect to get upgraded to a non-standard room (or hopefully the best available standard room) anyway because of my Plat status. For non-elite members, I don't know if the room type assignment is usually left as is. If so, then these codes may be important. Unfortunately, there is some work involved to search the code in order to determine which room type is which at a particular property. One can, for example, usually find these same room type codes over in the paid reservations search area to match them up with their more detailed room descriptions.

I know that this question has been asked some other times, but I couldn't find the threads with my few search attempts.

KathyWdrf

The reality is that most hotels don't really make room assignments until the night before, or even the day of arrival.

There are too many variables that make it difficult or impossible to assign a specific room, or even a very specific room category, way in advance. People check out early, or extend their stay unexpectedly, etc. In other words, it's a dynamically changing situation and you really are not getting an advance room assignment (except perhaps in certain specific situations).

So the notion that it really makes much difference which line you select is just absurd. Usually you are only expressing a room type preference; the exact type of room is not necessarily even guaranteed.

Yes, but the hotel would theoretically assign rooms based on the room type preferences that were expressed in the reservation. If a room is actually available in both the ADA and non-ADA category on the day of arrival, would the hotel assign the guest to the ADA or non-ADA room type that they (randomly) selected? If not, then is the visible selection of bed type given any more regard than the hidden options of standard rooms such ADA, view, or high/low floor? Or are these preferences equally ignored?

So, we stayed at the W Montreal on Sunday night on the points and cash basis. I will preface this by saying that due to the Nor'easter that was hitting the region on Sunday and Monday, we arrived earlier than originally planned to out run the weather. Also, I am a brand new Starwood gold, only earning the status a week ago based on a promotion.

We arrived on Sunday at the W around 1 pm. We parked alongside the hotel on St. Antonie since there were ample meters on a Sunday afternoon.

This is my first W experience but knew enough about the concept. Anyway, check in was very smooth and there was no issue with checking in early. Evidently, the room I chose with the King bed was classified as a "wonderful" room. It was room 315 and faced out to the Victoria Square.

Room was as promised, king bed, funky furnishings and a huge glass wall shower that faced the main room. So, overall a typical room that was fine.

The staff were great and very friendly. I used the wireless in the lobby which is free. I had a little problem connecting, but a staffer had come over to help (without even knowing I had a problem). She also asked if I wanted water or the like.

The scented candles throughout the lobby are a little overwhelming, but we don't spend much time there so no biggie.

We did not use the valet parking since I heard on Flyertalk that it is expensive - $35 CAN I believe. We parked at the meter for the day and then put the car in a lot for the night nearby.

I did not ask for an upgrade, nor was one offered. We did take advantage of the 4 pm Gold benefit check out which was great.

Since we were staying only one night at the W and the the other night at the Sheraton Centre-Ville(see other post on that topic), I have a good perspective of both properties. I would stay at either again although the Sheraton is a bit more covenient to some great restaurants and other activites, but Montreal is easy to get around anyway.

I hope this helps and you enjoy your upcoming stay!

returned from a weekend stay at this property. i hadn't stayed at a W in a couple of years. my favorite W is Seattle and i haven't been there in a while.

after this stay, i remembered why i generally dislike W's.

cons:
1) i hate coming back to the hotel at night and having to show a key so that one of the huge bouncers can open the velvet rope. this is montreal, mind you...not exactly NYC, LA, or London. once you enter, more velvet ropes guide people to either the "club" or the elevator banks for room access. i got back 1 AM'ish saturday night (primetime for clubs) and, from what i could see as i passed, there were about six people in the "club" and there was no line to enter. as with most "things W," this "scene" was more flash than substance.

2) the gym was pretty pitiful. the room itself was tiny and under-equipped. if i had time to work out, i would have had to go to a private gym.

3) there are only two elevator banks and no staff elevators (or, as they call them, "lifts"). so, elevator waits could get pretty bad.

4) the rooms were small with virtually no drawers for clothing, etc.

5) there were no coffee pots in the room.

6) way too much room was designated for bars. there were three freestanding bars and a restaurant with a bar area in the first two floors of the hotel.

7) the business center has two computers and a printer. even though the front desk knew the toner cartridge was out on friday, the hotel couldn't replace it until monday even though there was a computer store about two blocks from the hotel. the mouse on one of the two computers needed a battery and was basically inoperable during my entire stay.

8) i generally don't like rain showers. i prefer speakman showerheads. it's really tough to direct the showerhead when it's on the ceiling. you get much better pressure and versatility from the westin speakman set-up. if a hotel is going to have a rainshower, they should also have a speakman, as i have seen at some properties.

9) the room set-up had the bathroom as soon as you enter the room on the right....then the see through shower....then the bedroom. you could see all the way through the shower to the bathroom from the bed (i.e., the wall between the bed and the shower was glass and there was only a curtain blocking the toilet. so, if someone gets up in the middle of the night, it's hard to block the light. again, fun to look at but not super practical (the calling card of the W).

10) the bed is platform style and is dark wood to match the basically pitch dark nature of the room. even with all of the lights on, the room is very dark. but, the corners of the platform bed stick out. so, given the small size of the room, it is very easy to stub one's toe (as i and my companion did several times) walking around the bed.

11) for such a hip hotel, the TV was gargantuan tube style. how old fashioned.

12) no wifi in the rooms. how old fashioned.

13) the hotel tries too hard to be cool....and rarely succeeds. but, simple things like room service fail to deliver. my saturday morning delivery was a disaster. i ordered two omelettes, one with cheddar and ham. well, the omelette came up without cheddar even though the order was repeated back to us. also, we received an english muffin instead of the requested bagel. and, the coffee came up without cream. and, there was no cream cheese which was requested and repeated when the order was read back. a call to Service Express resulted in the bagel and cream appearing in about 15 minutes....but no eggs. the agent had no idea that the eggs were wrong. 15 more minutes resulted in the egg delivery. but, at that point, the bagel was cold. and the coffee wasn't super hot after having to wait for the cream. and, the first person had to eat alone or the other omelette would have been cold. so, all-in-all, i took about an hour and twenty minutes for the full order to arrive from placement to final delivery. and, mind you that this was an $80+ breakfast order.

pros:

1) the concierges were nice and helpful...particularly hugo.

2) the staff was very helpful.

3) free wifi in the lobby and (tiny) business center.

4) free bottled water as we were leaving.

i guess i am much more of a westin guy. but, i find W's to be LOTS of show and little substance. i wouldn't race back to this property.

I am currently on my third of four nights at the W Montreal and am very much enjoying the stay. As a gold I was automatically upgraded to a large room...by W standards and situated on floor 9 of 10 with a beautiful view...all on points. Front desk and concierge staff all warm and very helpful and support you through any language challenges. The rooms are well appointed and we have not been in need for anything. We havent utilized restaurants and were not even encouraged by concierge to avail ourselves due to the amazing local choices. Parked at a garage around the corner for 16,00$ per day. Have yet to use my car, so the valet option is not worth it if you plan on staying local. The have an small internet room or kiosk which eliminates the need for 15,00$ daily room fee, unless you need frequent access. I was happy to discover on a side note that I get free texting and data access from my Verizon Blackberry, even though calls are 39 cents per minute. The night life is quite rich at the hotel with a bar for all types and modern lounge appointments. Great place to hang after you go out on the town, or even stay onsite. I am an infrequent traveler, using AMEX points everywhere I go, but I would say that this is well worth the pointage. Hope this helps whomever whenever.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at the W Montreal...came over from the Ritz...what a nice change.

First the downsides...the robes were too small (Only Vegas has been able to help me with that), the ice bucket was tiny, the drawers were almost non-existent, the rain shower was fun to look at, but not super functional and the drink on the patio was expensive.

If it sounds like I am reaching, it is because I am. I thought the W was a beautiful place once you walked through the doors. Certainly not created for big groups, but since it was just me and a friend, it was perfect. I even thought that the lack of privacy in the bathrooms was unique. I did have a door separating the shower/tub/sink area from the toilet, but otherwise everything was open.

I was staying on points, so my expectations were set accordingly, but the hotel treated me as if I were a king. An email showed up 2 weeks before my stay asking if there was anything that they could help me with. Within hours we had arranged time at the spa, dinner reservations, an upgraded room, concert tickets, and late check-out. I have to say that the service before I showed up was amazing, topped only by the service after I arrived.

Every need was attended to and the hotel even provided some nice touches...like roses, 1/2 bottle of Champagne, truffles, and chocolate covered strawberries in the room upon my return from dinner and the concert. Every recommendation from the Concierge was great! Every restaurant they steered us to was top notch and they gave us great directions.

I could see how a business traveler would not be as happy, but for a nice weekend with a good friend, this is the only place I will stay in Montreal!

why? you paid for those points...and spg points are hard earned points.

and, while i thought the service was very strong, i didn't understand why the hotel couldn't fix problems in the business center from friday until monday (i.e., no toner for the printer (even though a computer store was two blocks away) and a broken mouse).

on a one to five star scale, i still would only give this property 1.5 stars. i guess i am a westin guy. i thought the property was pretty weak overall (again, other than the service).

Based on my five visits to this hotel, I'd agree with what you said except:

9) the room set-up had the bathroom as soon as you enter the room on the right....then the see through shower....then the bedroom. you could see all the way through the shower to the bathroom from the bed (i.e., the wall between the bed and the shower was glass and there was only a curtain blocking the toilet. so, if someone gets up in the middle of the night, it's hard to block the light. again, fun to look at but not super practical (the calling card of the W).

This depends on what type of room you booked... I'm guessing you had a mega room. There are many different types of room layouts in this hotel.

11) for such a hip hotel, the TV was gargantuan tube style. how old fashioned.

That's why you need to stay on 10th floor ;)

12) no wifi in the rooms. how old fashioned.
hmmm... maybe they've changed since Feb. I remembered they did have wifi in rooms (not free as usual).

It's CDN - with the exchange rate it's close to what is being charged in the States right now too. IMO it's outrageous these days to charge anything for internet/wi-fi service since you can buy Boingo and others for $15 per MONTH :)

FWIW, the rate is actually 15ish per day. But again..you don't have to pay for it! Register in lobby for FREE and your account is good for 24 hours, even in room. Honest!

yup, I can confirm that (at least that was the case in Feb). I had no problem brought my laptop back from the lobby to my room on 10th floor and still had free wifi.

the bed is platform style and is dark wood to match the basically pitch dark nature of the room. even with all of the lights on, the room is very dark. but, the corners of the platform bed stick out. so, given the small size of the room, it is very easy to stub one's toe (as i and my companion did several times) walking around the bed.

An interesting and pleasant matter regarding this issue. I received an email requesting feedback on my stay. I had addressed this matter (smashed toes) via an email response and I was e-contacted by the manager with apologies and assurance that I contact him the next time I stay there. A week later, corporate contacts me via email and informs me that I should expect 8000 points to be redeposited into my account! Completely unsolicited and unexpected.

Well, well, well :D

I had an opportunity to stay at the wonderful W Montreal for several nights over Near Year's 2008. The experience was amazing. The service was impeccable, surpassing some of the Ritz, Four Seasons, and St Regis I'd stayed. ^

Before arrival, I received an email from the "hotel experience ambassador" (not the standard email, but a personal email from her) welcoming me to the hotel. She recognized my Platinum status, offered assistance and asked if there was anything I wanted ^ Well, I told her we were celebrating a special occasion and since it's going to be a NYE stay, we'd prefer some privacy.

Check-in
The moment I walked into the beautiful lobby (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158876576/), every staff greeted me with a warm smile and offered assistance. I took off my gloves, 180s, scarf, breathing in warm air and the check in agent first annouced my upgrade...wait... wait....*drum roll please*

"Mr. BlissWorld, we have upgrade you to our WOW Suite (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158064547/)"

*jaws on the floor* she offered my platinum amenity, told me I'd love the suite, the sent me to my WOW suite on the 10th floor (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2157967161/).

Suite
The WOW suite was basically a bi-level loft suite (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158843316/) with 20 ft floor to ceiling windows (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158054771/). The view was pretty good, of square victoria and adjacent towers. Upon entry, I found a gigantic sofa (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158048199/) in the middle of the living room (the size of a queen size bed) with pillows scattered around. There were a half bath, mini bar area, extra dressers (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158024903/), long desk, 42" plasma tv on the wall, bang and olufsen stereo system (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158041735/), and a large balcony (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158801464/) with a nice view (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158797082/).

When I looked up, I found the bedroom loft area. A nice bathroom (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158032913/)was situated at one corner with see-through shower walls and vanity. The rainfall shower (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158829300/in/photostream/) was a nice touch. The other corner resided the W classic bed (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158837180/) with lovely illuminated nightstands (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158035913/in/photostream/). And, there was another large LCD TV hanging from the ceiling. It was adjustable to face the bed, bathroom, or downstairs living room. A modern illuminated staircase (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158819872/) connects both areas. It was fantastic.

The blinds were fully automated with a remote control. a touch of a button controls the various pieces of the window.

Room Service
This is where it got even better. The first night we wanted to order some room service. However, we didn't particular find the items on the menu to be interesting. We called Whatever/whenever to see if we could order from the in house restaurant, Otto. Whatever/whenever agent offered with enthusiasm and read me the menu. I asked if they had any seafood dishes with risotto. She told me the only dish they had with lobster, clams, and mussels was the linguine. I told her I wish it was risotto instead of linguine. She put me on hold. When she came back, she said she asked the chef and the chef would create the dish with risotto just for me! :D ^ ^ ^ Now, that's Whatever/whenever!!!!

Then, the next day, we decided to have an impromptu New Year's party (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158009309/) in our suite. We wanted some hors d'oeuvres and called Whatever/whenever. On such a short notice, we were extremely impressed when the items showed up to our suite: gigantic prawns platter (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158018955/) with oysters and cheese plate ^ ^ ^

Restaurants/Bars
Like I said, they had an in house restaurant Otto, at the hotel. From my room service, my entree was delicious. They also had 3 bars throughout the hotel. We went to wunderbar and had a couple of drinks. I had this french martini with bubbly and raspberry stuff (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2158867518/) in it. I didn't really know what was in it as the cocktail waitress was explaining it to me in French :D :p. But, it was one of the best cocktails I've had in a LONG time.

Facilities
There was a small business center, a nice gym with giant personal TVs in the basement next to the entrance to the underground.

Internet
Internet is available via wire or wifi for $20CAD a day. Wifi is free in the lobby or on the Mezzanine level seating area (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dunkindonuts/2157958847/).

Area
The area can be confusing at times. There aren't too many establishments around the immediate surroundings. There are, however, plenty of places within walking distance. The underground connects W Montreal to Place Bonaventure, Eaton Cetre, and other places.

Everything in on Notre Dame, including a Tim Horton's and Starbucks. That's also where the nearest convenient store is.

Old Montreal/Place Jacques Cartier is about 10-15 minutes away (walking).

Overall
The hotel far surpassed my expectations. It's not just the upgrade, but every single staff I ran into smiled and made small conversations with me. Everyone was extremely friendly and courteous. Whatever/whenever was wonderful and the pre-arrival email was a nice touch.

This was probably one of the best if not the best experience I've ever had at a hotel. The service and amenities were better than some of the Four Seasons, St Regis, and Ritz I'd been to. ^

This hotel should be an exemplary to all Starwood hotels.

Hello,

I'm here at the hotel right now on the 4th floor. I booked a regular WOW room (I think that's what it's called.) I must say, the room is pretty neat as is and the floor layout (hallway) is definitely aweing as this is something I'd only see in a movie. The staff are pretty friendly however, it's 11:20pm right now and the clubbing/bar is opened to the general public and that, to me, is rather inconvenient because like another member mentioned, you have to flash the bouncers (several of them too!) your card key and whatnot. There are line-ups all over the place making it difficult to get in and out, however, I kind of like the atmosphere that is being created. The music being played is something we never get in Vancouver - house music.

Cool hotel but I think the concept is far beyond my liking for now. We'll see how things go in the morning when things calm down. I've been travelling for over 16 hours today and I think I deserve a hot shower and some Zzz's. :p

Okay, so here I am at the Maple Leaf Lounge @ Dorval YUL. After spending some quiet time at the W Montreal, yes, I have to agree, it was a lot better compared to the chaos I encountered last night. I had breakfast at the W Cafe (complimentary breakfast) and spent some time in my room to finish up some last minute reports and packing. Went downstairs, the staff fired a chat with me and sent me on my way to meet my co-workers with a bottle of water. I got some time to check the hotel out while it was still quiet and it was super nice. :D

I'd definately come back to the W Montreal. :)

Hi All,

I'll be staying at the W next weekend. Since I need two beds, I have a Mega room booked on points to guarantee 2 queens. I'd obviously like a suite upgrade, but would probably only take it if it also has 2 queens. So, my question is- does anyone know/has anyone stayed in one of their suites that has 2 queen beds? If so I'll request that before hand.

Thanks!

Just back from a four night stay at this property.

The Good;
Staff is so friendly and helpful. One of the best staffs in a hotel I have ever encountered.
Daniel the concierge is great-what a charming and nice fella
The bed is incredible-the bath products are great.Room was kept very clean
The decor is very different-in a good way.And well maintained.
Free Internet in the lobby and the Mezzanine.
The not so good:
Everything you have to pay for is outrageously expensive-a small Voss water is $6,coffee and a tiny pastry $5.85,Internet $20 a day,the restraunt is crazy expensive as is the room service. The mini bar is outrageous.
NO COFFEE in the room
No free water in the room for plat's(I know this is not a published bennie-but c'mon)
The turndown is iffy-and not very extensive.

I was upgraded to a Fantastic corner"suite"(just a very large room)on the fith floor.Room was very quiet.Hotel was pretty busy.

I would stay here again just for the staff.

i think i am the only flyertalker that doesn't like this property. oh well. :)

from what i remember, if a staff member was nice, they were really nice. if they weren't nice, they REALLY weren't. not a lot of gray area.

but, i don't like W's anyway. i am a westin man, myself.

FlyCoToSeeTheYanks-I do not think you are alone in that.
While i could appriciate the room-it was pretty badly thought out if you had to actually use the room for something besides a fun weekend.
While there is a nice desk-the lighting is poor over the workspace,
There is no place to have a meal in the room
The infamous toe stubber bed platform
The bench/coffee table facing the dresser-wonderful if I have to sit and ponder what to wear that night.
The huge amoire with three tiny drawers inside.
The enormous sofa-ummmmmm would be fun if I had that many friends to come over and play-but I don't
The tub is wonderful
The shower-welllllll it is hard to get really clean in it.
The club music 24x7-although it was MUCH better than the other w's I have been to.
Now My B'room could be closed off from the rest of the room with floor to celing curtains-could make for some fun shows

The Westin is coming along-finally!But I think you are still lookking at another year till it opens.

I agree completely with this assessment, the staff was super and I really liked my room when I was there. Also the No Coffee/No free water is pretty much SOP at Ws they always have that "what do I have to do to get a cup of coffee" thing in the room directing you to downstairs.

I guess Ws are either a likem or hate them thing, I do wish they would copy the "westin wakeup", that would make W's perfect IMO.

Or, call whatever/whenever. They will set up a coffee machine in your room if that's what you want. It's about full service and more guest interaction. You won't find coffee machines at many upscale properties like St Regis or Ritz Carlton. You call.

Ha, you know it does say call whatever/whenever, but I always took that as "call room service and we'll gladly send you a $12 pot of coffee" not call and we'll bring you a machine.

Guess I'll do that next time!

The card in the room at the W in Dallas, pointed you in the direction of free coffee in the Living Room, but did mention that a coffee maker could be brought up if you wanted. At the W in Dallas, the coffee was free in the morning.

The W in Montreal could also offer free coffee, which would be appreciated, and they could be a little more clear in the fact that a coffee maker could be brought up.

I just spent 3 nights here this past weekend with 2 friends. I redeemed starpoints.

Overall impression: Very good!

The people on the trip turned from 2 to 3 soon before we left. I e-mailed the hotel asking for either a room with two beds (I had originally just booked one) or a roll-away should the former not be available. While in EWR waiting to board my AC flight on Friday, the manager called me (!) and very professionally said that I had been upgraded to a Mega room with two beds - and is there anything else I needed? ^

The lobby was DARK. I mean - I understand the whole "dimly lit" W vibe, but I mean it was practically pitch black in there. Check in was very simple and the staff was friendly. The concierge, Daniel, was fabulous and had our weekend plans ironed out in just a few minutes.

The room was very large but not a suite. Massive bathroom with a gorgeous rain shower and huge jacuzzi tub that could comfortably fit two people.

Room service was a massive rip-off. We ordered 3 (three) cocktails and had them brought up and it was $65.

Location is good but not great. Nothing really immediately around the hotel (a great bagel/breakfast place just up the street though), but it's a very easy walk to more fun areas. Also the Square-Victoria metro stop is right there.

The bars and restaurants in the hotel seemed nice but we never really went there. There's just so many in Montreal that it seemed a waste to hang out at the hotel.

Definitely a great place to stay in an amazing city. Just don't bother with room service. Or the mini-bar for that matter. The $90 oxygen canister was more comical than useful.

One thing I would like to add is to check your creditcard statement after you check out!

I was charged for 2 bottles of the very expensive VOSS water that I did not consume! I decided to go for the Chateau d'eau St Laurent from zee tap instead of what was offered which is not complimentary even to Plat members I might add!

Am trying to get my $28 bucks back, which is turning into a bit of a chore!

Big fan of the W Montreal.. its basically my second home.. VERY friendly staff, etc etc.. however..has anyone else experienced REALLY long wait times for drinks at Wunderbar (on the 2nd floor)? Its a great spot to get a cocktail after a long day, but the bartenders are incredibly slow. Like I waited 15 minutes for my Singapore Sling (which was delicious btw).. and the place was empty. This happened for every round over my 2 day stay.

Also- just curious if anyone has ever been to the main bar (forgetting the name).. it was absolutely THE place to be this past Wednesday night.. when I came back late at night, there was a line around the block, bouncers, promoters and lots of hot Montrealers.. I wasn't in the mood to "club", but will they let hotel guests in or do they wait like everyone else?

The main bar has very yummy drinks. Yummmmmm

You will be able to get in without staying in line as a hotel guest. Or, if you have hot girls with you, you'll be IN ;)

It's a very small bar though....not very many tables but awesome design. I was there for New Years.

Always check you bill at this Hotel they have a habit of chargeing the wrong amounts.

Question about this hotel again... as I'll be back for 5 nights next month this time.. (for the Black and Blue week-long event). :D

Is it worth it to redeem 12K points for a suite upgrade or should I just wing it and hope for the best.

Also, I do know that the hotel does not give 'free' stuff to Plats, especially breakfast. But on the reservation, I booked and paid in full for the prepaid rate, and in there it states "AAA breakfast rate". Does that mean I get breakfast too? This only shows up on the main "view my reservation" page but it doesn't show up when I click on "Printed View". I wonder if it is a glitch. Cos when I previewed my reservation last night, it showed up and I printed it out. But when I looked at it again this morning, it's gone. It just says "Prepaid rate 30% off". However, I have the pirnted page and will it to show the front desk just in case! :D

Watch this hotel its BAD for adding charges... a lot of us use this hotel and have a lot of problems with billing issues.

Beware: Some rooms at this hotel are undergoing some renovations. No major disuruption though I was awoken on Tues morning with bangs and drilling!

I agree on the exorbitant charges re: room service. In fine print - to be added to order, $5.00 plus 18% gratuity charge (to who I wonder), plus applicable taxes which is 5% GST and 8%QST. So a $5 cup of coffee may end up to something like $15!

I really like this hotel, but my major gripe is the insane prices on everything. Room service is off the charts- its actually $9 for coffee (plus all crazy charges). Cereal and milk is $18.. Voss water is $8..valet is $40, internet $20 (though you can get it free if you log on in the lobby and get a free 24 hour pass)..anyway I love the location and staff but the charges are a bit ridiculous..I'm excited for the Westin to open around the corner.

As if the internet couldn't get any more expensive at the W Montreal.. a new "enhancement" has been recently rolled out. You can no longer get 24 hours free by doing the lobby log-in trick.. that now only gives you 1 hour of free wireless.

With the new rate plans you can choose between "Lite" and "Enhanced"... the difference between beats the hell out of me and no explanation is given at time of purchase (that I saw). I cheaped out and got the lite and it seems fast enough (then again how much bandwith do you need to browse FT).

$19.00 for 1 day of High Speed Lite
$25.00 for 1 day of High Speed Enhanced
$38.00 for 2 days of High Speed Lite
$50.00 for 2 days of High Speed Enhanced
$52.00 for 3 days of High Speed Lite
$68.00 for 3 days of High Speed Enhanced
$66.00 for 4 days of High Speed Lite
$76.00 for 4 days of High Speed Enhanced
$80.00 for 5 days of High Speed Lite
$100.00 for 5 days of High Speed Enhanced

Also- they have new, free I-phone mobile concierges to use. I started a new thread to discuss them specifically, but they are pretty interesting.

I specifically jailbroke my iPhone and installed tethering software, so I would finally be free of Internet costs in hotels (at least in Canada). Rogers allows tethering in their plans unlike AT&T in the states.

Do they have a parking garage at this hotel or do you have to use valet parking? Any idea of the charges?

pitbrian

They have a lot across the street that they use for valet. Its really expensive- something like $40/day. There are definitely cheaper places to park... I think its been discussed earlier in the thread. Everything at this hotel is pricy (a pot of coffee is something like $9 from room service). great hotel though!

Go two blocks either North or south and you will find cheaper parking at self service lots.
Of course with the current temp's that may be a loooooong two block walk

Any recent Platinum (suite) upgrade experiences?

I was upgraded to a Fantastic Suite on a three-night stay just before New Year's. I'll post a photo report as soon as I upload my pictures to Flickr.

I always get fantastic suites and once in a while WOW suites. Both are nice.. the Fantastic Suite is basically an extended mega room with a large (queen size) couch, double sinks (double Bliss product) and more windows. The Wow suite is 2 levels- same big couch, double level windows and has a loft feel.

I was just there yesterday - when I checked my reservation online before heading up there it showed I was in a Fantastic Suite (upgraded from the Mega room I had booked), but when I checked in I ended up in the Mega room after all.. Hardly something to complain about, the Mega room is quite large and still very nice.

As for parking, there's a lot across the park from the property, you can enter it on Rue Sainte-Antoine (it's the first right you can make after you come down Cote du Beaver Hill). It's a very short walk to the hotel, actually it's where the W valets your car to, and the fee for parking there was $19 CAD for the night.

Currently staying in the middle of two night stay at the W Montreal for the weekend. Preassigned upgrade at check-in to a Fantastic Suite from a Wonderful Room. Cool room basically as described: this is essentially a "jr. suite" in conventional hotel terms. The very large open bathtub is a centerpiece. The TV swivels to viewable from either the sofa side or the bed. However, the 4 foot high room divided partially block the right side of the TV in you are sitting/laying on the right side of the bed, which is a little weird -- there was no reason to have to construct the divider like that.

After checking in, noticed that TV reception was poor. Engineering was unable to fix and was moved to a bi-level WOW suite on the 10th floor.

The room is very cool, but the bed of room 1003 seems to be up against the elevator motor, and so you hear and feel a grumbling all day/night long, every time the elevator moves. The engineer was here and confirmed the issue (mumbled something in French which I didn't understand) and said he was going to speak to the Manager on Duty to see what they can. The response was to move us one room over to 1005 where they promised it would be "quiet". Well, it was quieter, but you could still hear and feel the rumbling of the elevator motor/hydrolics. Not sure how they felt the moving one room over was going to eliminate all noise. I don't know why they would put anyone in 1003...1005 is a closer call, but still a problem. The noise from the elevator is extremely intrusive and I was unable to sleep well as a result. I will be following up with the manager on the elevator noise after the stay. Maybe they should combine these rooms, and put the bedroom on the main (10th) floor (where I don't think you will hear the elevator) and the living room up in the loft? Anyway, I recommend that people steer clear of these rooms.

Overall, I think the hotel is great the staff is excellent, especially the Concierge Daniel.

One additional note: the hotel has discontinued providing free coffee in the morning for hotel guests. :(

We did find a good place for a quick breakfast called Bagel Express (omlettes, bagels, crepes, coffee, fresh OJ, etc.) about a block away, up the hill on the right.

As for parking, there is ample street parking which is free overnight (I think charges start at 9am). There are also smaller side streets (away from the river) which are totally free (no meters) over the weekends.

Hi folks. Although I was planning a very romantic weekend in Quebec City, given the limited choice of Starwood properties coupled with my free night Plat. gift, I've decided to do W Montreal instead. So I'm hoping to get down over the Easter Weekend.

A couple questions:

1. Since this is a very *big* weekend and I am hoping for romantic, any suggestions on how to get the best upgrade as a plat member? I will bo staying two nights (weekend), one night paying cash and the second using the free stay.
2. Does this hotel offer free breakfast or other amenities for plat members?
3. Is there a lounge?
4. Anything else I should know about W Hotels? I've never stayed at a W Hotel so this will be a first.

Finally, I've never used the platinum concierge service before. Might this be a good time to give it a shot?
Thanks everyone!

1. I only manage to stay there one night during my visits and as a Platinum have always been upgraded to a Fantastic Suite. It always depends on availability and in my experience if I stayed at a property for more than 1 night I tend not to get a suite but that's me.

2. No breakfast unfortunately. They have two places where you can have breakfast, Otto and the Cafe on the main floor. But as other posters noted there are some alternatives outside and hopefully the weather will be better for you to venture out. The fitness centre is very modern. Free wifi on the ground floor the last time I was there.

3. There is no lounge like the Sheratons. There are two bars on the property. For me, the W is the hip place to be in Montreal for SPG. The Sheraton has a very nice lounge with free breakfasts and snacks at night for Platinums.

4. There are 4 SPG properties in Montreal. As in my previous reply, the W has the cool factor. If you want to dance and party, this is the place to be with the Wunderbar. Be prepared, the halls and some places are darker than normal. It's the vibe.

Hope this helps.

Why not let the hotel/GM know you are coming for a big, romantic weekend and ask them

As you have heard, no lounge, no breakfast, and (sas of last week), no free coffee in the lobby in the morning, but yes to free hot chocolate and pieces of cookies in the afternoon.

But, I think it is a terrific hotel for the money, and the only "romantic" spg hotel.

Agree with redtsorm- Generally plats will get upgraded to a fantastic suite- which is nice (ask for a corner suite if available), but not absolutely amazing. I stay at this property usually once a week and thats my standard upgrade- however they have hooked me up in the past due to my loyalty (ex. I had a Wow suite upgrade this past Valentines day weekend).

If it is really special occasion I'd recommend trying to get a Wow Suite (bi-level loft like suite with huge windows)- even if you have to pay extra or use points. Email the GM and see what they can do- the management at the hotel is very responsive. I know they routinely sell out, especially on weekends, so don't show up the day of check-in hoping to score one. They aren't "select standard suites" so they don't have to upgrade platinums even if they are available.

As for your first time at a W- I think you will be impressed if you are looking for a scene. The check-in will usually have loud music playing and everyone working there is good looking. The only real annoying thing is that the lighting is very poor. There is generally no overhead lighting in the rooms- just desk lamps or side table lamps. Ipod docks/speakers are standard and all of the showers are waterfall- with a large head pouring water down vertically from the ceiling. Bliss products are great- body butter, foaming fash wash and lemon/ sage soaps/shampoos. Hallways are especially dark and the club in the lounge gets pretty packed at night (you can always jump the line as a hotel guest). All food/ drinks are expensive so plan to shell out cash if you want to eat on site- for ex. a bowl of raisin bran is $17 and coffee is $9. The restaurant Otto is decent, but way overpriced ($30-$40/ entree). Valet is $40 which is funny because the hotel isn't in the downtown area and theres lots of cheap street parking. Internet is also $25/day (though you get 1 hour free if you log in from the lobby and then go up to your room).

Overall its a cool hotel in a unique location- between the downtown and Old Port. Staff will bend over backwards to make your trip pleasant which is why this is my hotel of choice in Montreal. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had a stay at this W just before New Year's. The experience was simply fantastic, and this is one of my new favorite W properties. We were upgraded to a Corner Fantastic Suite on an upper floor, and absolutely loved the room. Check-in staff could not have been more friendly, and the concierge was very helpful in arranging ski lessons for us at the Westin Tremblant. The Suite came with an iphone 3G, with preloaded apps that recommended restaurants and sights in Montreal. The GPS functionality of the iphone was also extremely useful for navigating around Montreal on foot, as neither of us had been there before. I was sad to leave after just three days in Montreal, and will definitely be back. Below are some photos of the Hotel and the Fantastic Suite they placed us in:

I am planning a possible weekend in Montreal in August with family (spouse and two teenagers). I have stayed at the Sheraton before and it is getting old and tired, the Le Meridien looks even worse.
Questions: Is the W acceptable for a family on a weekend? Do some rooms have two beds instead of only one? Are some bathrooms closed off with a door so there is a degree of privacy to shower?

I once had friends stay with me in a 2 bed, park view Mega-room and the shower had a curtain so privacy wasn't an issue.
I love the W and hate the Sheraton. Le Meridien is okay.. if a little boring.
The W is very accomodating. You should have no problem getting a confirmed 2 bed Mega room (ask for the park view), which are surprisingly spacious. They treat plats very well here, so make sure you add the comments that you need the 2 beds- otherwise you'll get a fantastic suite upgrade which is featured up-thread.

Actually if you look at my review of the Sheraton from march of this year you might be suprised at how nice I found the renovated rooms to be.
Plus having a lounge is a big savings when it comes to breakfast.

I LOVE the WMontreal-but if you need space four for people in a room I am thinking a JR suite at the Sheraton(with a fold out sleeper)might be a better fit

Pre-Arrival
Used two of my free weekend nights from the Q2 Promotion here at the W Montreal. Two weeks in advance I was surprised to find my reservation had already been touched and upgraded from a standard wonderful room to a fantastic suite. Definitely the furthest in advance I have ever been upgraded! A nice touch and shows you how well they treat Platinum Members at this hotel. In addition I later found out that the Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament in town so the hotel was booked solid for the weekend.

Arrival
My wife and I flew into Montreal and took the Via Rail train to Quebec City for 3 days prior to our stay at the W. Mrs. Sleepdoc and I had a fantastic time in QC and stayed at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/fairmont-presidents-club/437217-fairmont-official-fairmont-hotel-review-thread-16.html).

The W Montreal is conveniently situated downtown across from Victoria Square downtown. It is a short walk to Old Montreal, Chinatown, the Metro and the rue St Catherine where you will find the insanely large and confusing indoor mall that stretches from building to building. I can imagine though this would be very convenient during the winters! In addition the Westin is just a short walk away from the W… though we didn’t tour it and just saw it from a short distance. We arrived at the W Hotel quite early on Friday just before noon by train. Inquired about the possibly of checking in early with the friendly FD clerk and was pleased to find that our suite would only take about 1 hour to clean as the guest had just checked out. I took a W scented candle as my Platinum Amenity gift. Not wanting to explore around at that time we headed to the bar at Restaurant Otto and had a few drinks while we waited for suite. My wife and I met a friendly female pair from England and had a hilarious chat with them with over drinks. We did not take partake in the meals at Restaurant Otto but the bar drinks were interesting enough and the selection of premium liquors was plentiful though they were missing a few key ingredients for certain drinks that our newly found friends attempted to order. In the mornings the bar also serves as the W Café with coffee and assorted pastries. Incidentally unlike many other W’s the coffee here is not for free and there is nominal amount that one can bill to your room.

Fantastic Suite
The FD clerk called us when the suite was ready and we proceeded to head up via the one bank of elevators. All of the floors with rooms must be accessed with your keycard. Typical W mat in the elevator… this one only says bonjour. No switching of mats during the day to reflect the morning, afternoon, or evening as the other W’s in the states commonly do. Hallways and of course overall feel of this W lend to the trendy dark hues and reds with softly lighted corridors.

Only one entrance to the suite, immediately to your right is a large cabinet with a small set of drawers and large amount of hanging space and typical room vault. Next to this is your wet bar with goodies and refrigerator filled with typical beers, hard liquors, juices, water, and sodas. The Fantastic Suite is one big room with a large couch, dual sinks, open shower, separate door enclosed toilet and large bathtub in the center with only a wall separating the bathroom from the rest of the suite. In addition as others have mentioned there is a flat screen TV that swivels to either face the bed or the couch. There is a typical Ipod dock with speaker next to the bed along with a James Concierge iPhone on the desk that sits in a dual docking station. Although nice I didn’t really find the James iPhone to be overly helpful and preferred to use the services of the real concierge downstairs.

Way Spa
There is no Bliss Spa at this W as we have been accustomed to at the stateside Ws. According the concierge this W does not have a Bliss Spa as there is a minimum square footage that is required but nevertheless the services at this small spa in the lower level was excellent and we would easily recommend it.

Restaurant/Bars/Room Service
Did not partake in Restaurant Otto other than using the W Café in the mornings for a cup of coffee. Room Service was excellent… we had a nice flatbread along with Middle Eastern inspired chicken skewers with cucumber dipping sauce.

There are three main bars in the hotel. Bartini a very small bar located next to the elevators, WunderBar is on the opposite side of the hallway and lastly the Plateau Lounge located on the Mezzanine level. We only partook in the Plateau Lounge… had one of their famous Maple Mojitos… unless you like your drinks really sweet this one may not be the one for you!

Final Notes/Conclusion
Only two small problems arose during our stay. We had a small leak from the ceiling in the hallway of our suite and later found out that our AC compressor was blocked according to maintenance. They unfortunately were unable to fix it that night. A discussion with the 2nd shift manager revealed that the only other suite available was on the 3rd floor and according to her the noise level in that suite can be quite unbearable secondary to Plateau Lounge a floor below. She did offer us a standard room to which she apologized profusely as the hotel was fully booked and all the other suites were taken. I suggested that we could open the windows (these are locked and have to be opened with a special key), as it was cool enough outside to make the room bearable in the evenings along with the addition of a fan, which I requested. The following day I was assured that the AC would be fixed at the time Mrs. Sleepdoc and I were at the Way spa. Unfortunately the morning manager neglected to read the morning reports and this was not done. He apologized profusely and had it repaired immediately along with comping our room service ordered the night before and sending us a nice bottle of wine.

Platinum recognition as well as treatment is excellent in this hotel. I forgot to mention that the female concierge helped us (actually me!) track down the painting that we had bought in Quebec City which I forgot on the Via Rail train on the way back to Montreal. My French is sorely lacking and she made the process of finding the painting much easier! Merci! She in addition made reservations at an excellent restaurant in the Latin Quarter of the city. The service and friendliness at the hotel were excellent and we certainly didn’t sense any of the pretentiousness or “I’m better than you attitude” that some would describe as the W brand. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Montreal. Another great stay for us!

I just checked my ressie and my next Tuesday-Thursday stay was pre- upgraded from a standard room to a Fantastic Suite - used Cash and Points.

Should I print out the confirmation in case they boot us to the standard room by the ice machine?

Not sure if it would do any good even if they did. The upgrade is subject to availability at check-in and that can change at any time before that.

Be aware that *W u/g policy is effective day of arrival and even at that it is not reliable. For example I recently stayed at W Court in NYC and was told a few hours before my arrival I was given a suite but when I checked in, I was given a regular room. I was very disappointed.

Also be aware that the W Montreal is now a non smoking/non sinful hotel. Pity IMHO. Starwood is losing a lot of my business as a result but it seems happy with itself for this decision. Most W hotels still offer sinful rooms to those of us who puff, but not in Montreal which amazes me. However the Hilton Embassy Suites which is 1 block away offers what I want and all rooms are suites for a fraction of the price the W Montreal commands. Check out the alternatives!!! where you are a puffer or not.

It's actually not just the W Montreal that is non-smoking... It's the law in the province of Quebec so not really the fault of Starwood. Quite a surprise as there does seem a large percentage of people from my observation that do smoke in Montreal. Nevertheless outside of many buildings there are cigarette receptacles in abundance.

yea I realized they can change it all the time. I was preblocked to a Fantastic Suite for my stay this Friday but then i just saw they d/g me to the wonderful park view room. Hopefully I'll get something better on the day of arrival.

Actually, the Quebec law prohibits smoking in all public spaces but smoking rooms are allowed at the discretion of the hotel.

Nomade, I stand corrected! You're right designated smoking rooms are at the discretion of the hotel. My apologies on the semi-correct info I relayed earlier.

I've read all 17 pages of this thread. I've been reading reviews on Tripadvisor.com too.

I'm a Preferred Plus looking at going to Montreal for three or four nights next month (will depend on airfare, prefer four nights but due to price for flights will likely end up being three). Celebrating a special birthday. (the age women don't like to acknowledge)

Mr. Zipadee and I are in late 30s/early 40s. Would we feel out of place at this hotel? I absolutely love Starwood and Westins. I love the Westin in St. Louis and the Le Meridien in Munich. Never stayed at a W.

I would want a quiet room. I can book a wonderful room. Any chance a preferred plus will get upgraded to another category or at least get a higher room floor so I don't get stuck listening to the pulsating music I've read about?

Also, if we do four nights I'd be arriving around midnight. Would I get a crappy room then?

I know the new Westin gets mixed reviews but would be better off there? My other option is the Embassy Suites. Did I read there are smoking rooms there? My preference is an entirely non smoking hotel. Pricewise, there's only $25 or so between Westin and W. Embassy Suites is in the same price range. I like Embassy Suites and the extra room and breakfast/evening cocktails are tempting. Anyone stayed at all three?

This is our first time to Canada and Montreal. Like I said, I'm wanting a special romantic trip so I'd really appreciate suggestions.

Edited to add: Do I understand right that the W has a tub and the Westin doesn't? But the W has the weird bathroom set up. Does the wonderful rooms have the privacy curtain? And what about the view comparisons? Does the W have a nicer view of the square? And metro access? Does the W still have older style tvs? Which has better English speaking channel options?

And finally, the Fairmount is actually the cheapest "nice" hotel option. Would you recommend it over the others? My preference is the W but I'm wanting to be convinced I guess.

Don't know about preferred plus, but I can say this property is very generous with upgrades. I say this while sitting in a corner Extreme Wow Suite on the top floor... pics to follow later ;)

Anyway- I don't think you would feel out of place here. I see many couples in their 30s/40s quite enjoying themselves. If you've never stayed at a W, this is the W to try. While the atmosphere is somewhat clubby- I find it fun and different. I haven't tried the other properties you mention, but I just can't imagine celebrating a special occasion at an Embassy Suites:p I like the W because its in between the Old Port and downtown- easy walks to both. As for your other questions:
All of the TVs are new plasmas (at least in all the rooms I've had).
I don't think Wonderful rooms have tubs- just nice rainfall showers (with Bliss products). But all of the suites have nice soaking tubs complete with rubber duckies.
The W is right on Square Victoria so the view is the best, though its not that much to see. There are some side rooms that look into an adjacent office building, so try to request park view (most rooms).

As for free breakfast/cocktails at the Embassy Suites- if thats what you are looking for, then take it. The W is expensive- and that is coming from a Manhattanite. My breakfast this AM was a $9 pot of coffee (only coffee option) and $22 bowl of yogurt and granola. Drinks are expensive too- but the bars have wonderful cocktail menus and fun waitstaff.

The Westin seems to be a mess- so I'd avoid it for the time being.

Anyway- I don't think you'll be disappointed at the W unless you are very cost conscious. Enjoy your birthday whereever you end up!

I'm in my late 30's and spend more time at the W Montreal than I do at my house. I never feel uncomfortable here at all. The other poster is correct as I am also sitting in an upgraded Mega Room right now and that's the worst room I have gotten. I spent the first half of this year staying at the Marriott Chateau Champlain and the experience is much better here.

My room has a 40" LCD and IIRC that's pretty much what most have. I was in a big suite one week and it seems like that room had a different TV but it has been a while. That said, I basically only watch sports on TV and honestly have never turned my TV on here before now (use a SlingBox and tune in to my home channels) but after tracking down the remote it looks like there are about 40 channels and a decent split on English vs French.

Other points:
Metro is literally right across the street.
I usually get here around midnight on Sunday nights and do not get crappy rooms
The view is, well, it is OK I guess but not spectacular

Of Starwood properties in Montreal, I prefer the Sheraton. Not likely to be upgraded though. The views from the Lounge and the higher rooms are wonderful.

Beyond Starwood, you might think about Le Vogue or one of the boutique hotels - Le Germaine, etc... maybe one of the newer/older ones in old Montreal.

The Fairmont is OK, in a John Lennon retro cosmopolitan kind of way.

There really is no such thing as a bad location in downtown Montreal - you can pretty well walk anywhere, time and weather permitting.

There's no need to worry about the W Montreal, although given your list of concerns maybe you'd enjoy the Embassy Suites. I've enjoyed both this year (since the Westin just opened, haven't been there). However, I wasn't able to snag an upgrade at the W (also Preferred), since it was a summer weekend and pretty well booked up. I'm not aware of smoking rooms at the Embassy Suites, although it's possible -- but my floor, at least, was nonsmoking. The Embassy room itself was amazing: lots of space, a fantastic bath, a full kitchen. The Fairmont is an older grand-dame hotel, closer to the middle of the business district.

Noise was not a problem on the 5th floor -- and given that the public areas go up to the 3rd floor, it really shouldn't affect the vast majority of rooms. At least some rooms at the W don't have tubs, but from what I understand most have the see-through shower. The Westin and the W both front public squares -- Place Jean-Paul Riopelle and Square Victoria, respectively -- and actually, as an urban designer, I prefer Place Riopelle (http://www.pps.org/great_public_spaces/one?public_place_id=721). The Westin is about half a block further from the metro (you have to walk through the striking convention center), but in any case you can get there without going outside. My room at the W had a flat panel TV.

Do NOT worry about English, since all the hotels not only get CBC English broadcasts and all your favorite American cable channels, but even TV stations from Vermont (NBC, PBS, etc.) -- and by and large the Montrealais (downtown and west) are happily bilingual. (I was there two weeks ago with a fluent French speaker who grumbled at how little he was able to speak it.)

Zipadee.. do you feel comfortable in a modern hotel? If so go for the W... if you are willing to forgo points (ie Fairmont, which has zero romance by the way) then look at Hotel Saint James or Hotel Le Germain. Saint James is the hotel of choice for the celebrity market and offers a real old world feel with top notch service. Resto is currently being renovated. Germain is a more contemporary hotel without being too modern (ie W style with open plan bathroom / bedroom),

Also be mindful of our Thanksgiving holiday weekend in October which pushes up against a big party event run at the nearby convention centre run by the gay community as a fundraiser. The W will be jamming with people in a party mood and might create more noise than usual.

Just wanted to update. We booked the W. Unfortunately I didn't realize (valuable lesson learned) that by booking through Travelocity I lost my Preferred Plus priviledges. But it was a great deal. Oh well, still hope for a higher floor room. I'm very excited about our stay and checking out the W. We love Mardi Gras in New Orleans and survived the 09 version at the Royal Sonesta (tres bien!) I'll be in a party mood and can't wait. I hope the weather cooperates. I'll let you know how my first time W experience goes. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Some of the more popular hotels were already booked up because it is a popular week. I'm happy with our choice. As my husband said, we can't get powdered eggs anywhere. The W seemed like a great hotel choice, great location and we want to enjoy Montreal breakfasts anyway rather than save the money for the Embassy Suite breakfast. The extra money is worth the Montreal food experience we decided.
