Welcome, grillo!
This is the Air Canada forum. You might want to read the Ultimate Seating Thread on the Air NZ forum first:

Both of the aircraft are brand spanking new, or at least the interiors are in the case of the 744. I find the bathrooms on the 777 a little larger and the head room marginally better, but the differences are really a matter of taste.
The seating on both aircraft are new style pods that are amongst the most comfortable I've been in on any airline. You will have tons of space, a ten inch VOD screen, Lie flat bet and a real duvet. Meals are not Michelin Guide, but perfectly adequate, and you will be served by friendly attentive inflight staff.
At the end of the day I think your real choice between the two flights is when you want to arrive in AKL, and or how long you want to hang around in LAX for a connection. My personal preference is to go on the later flight, but that's just me. One thing to keep in mind about flight 1 is that it is the continuation of LHR-AKL via LAX so if you have favoured seates, you may find that somebody in LHR has already tagged them, likely for the same reasons you want them ;)
NZ is one of my favorite airlines, and is my prefered way to cross the Pacific. I don't think you can go wrong on either flight.

Welcome to Flyer Talk grillo1971 :)
As mentioned already the seats and IFE are identical.
That said, I prefer the 747 front cabin or upper deck (despite the disadvantages on disembarking in AKL after maybe 80 people) to the 777's large business cabins. Before the new LHR-HKG-AKL service started both NZ1 and NZ5 were 747 and usually NZ5 had lighter loads. Given some LHR traffic will now fly via HKG (much more convenient than the annoying US immigration transit procedure), the loads on NZ1 and NZ5 may now be more comparable?
Of course if seats are only available on 1 of these flights I would have no hesitation in booking. Whichever one you take it is a great product.
