Hawaii-based Airlines - Aloha cheaper than Haw'n Air? Interisland

My buddies and I are headed up to OGG for a weekend get-a-way. One of my friends and I have miles on HA and AQ, so we booked outbound with AQ and return with HA. My other friend needed to purchase tickets and found that it'd be cheaper to book one-way with AQ and HA. Thought this was interesting so I researched a little more...

Went to http://dps1.travelocity.com/lognlogin.ctl?tr_module=FARE and plugged in HNL and OGG city pairs. Clicked our departure date and also checked a random date in December.

Fare codes, as a result, say that Aloha has the cheapest interisland roundtrip fare (besides Pacific Wings, which I think uses turbo-prop planes):

Aloha Airlines USD 146.20 VTCM264
Aloha Airlines USD 143.00 L
Hawaiian Airlines USD 149.00 S
Aloha Airlines USD 149.00 E
Aloha Airlines USD 159.00 M
Aloha Airlines USD 164.50 TTCM264
Aloha Airlines USD 163.00 L7
Hawaiian Airlines USD 165.00 V
Aloha Airlines USD 175.00 M3
Aloha Airlines USD 179.00 BOW
Hawaiian Airlines USD 185.00 X
Aloha Airlines USD 185.00 BWP
...
...

Now this doesn't include the Aloha Air Executive Club fare of ~ $135 RT and Aloha's AAA fare. But with low Aloha fares like this, how does Hawaiian expect to survive? And is it just me or did anyone else think that both carriers just had the same fares?

Edit: BTW, the same fares can be found for any city pairs within the Hawaiian Islands.

There was often a small difference between the two in the good ol' times when they still offered Interisland coupons (depending on the agency you bought from, it could be that AQ was cheaper, or the other way around).

I'm not surprised that HA is a bit more expensive, though. They have been the most aggressive in raising fares, and they were the ones who decided to do away with the coupons. They're also in Ch. 11. AQ somehow managed the last two years' slump much more carefully, so they probably don't need to squeeze every cent out of their pax.

Well not to mention HA's revamping of their entire fleet... That must have costed a pretty penny. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif But I guess it was worth it... will fly on my first HA 717 next month. Hope it's as "quiet" and as "great" as people said it'd be.

slippahs, how can you fly HAL after AQ wrote such nice things about you in their in-flight mag? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

BTW, my next AQ flight is next week: BUR-SMF. First time on the ETOPS 737-700!

Aloha and Hawaiian have begun a three tier fare structure..based on supply and demand
more supply $65 fare, more demand $95 so it pays to play with the online to see what fare you can get but heaven forbid don't change it as they have heavy fines for changes as you require CSR service which costs money

Also if you fly the Dash 8 planes on AQ the wt restriction is 40 pounds of luggage then you pay cargo fees and it flys space available

Umm... the first tier of $65 dollars was abolished as of June 1st. You yourself posted the article about the interisland fare increase here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum25/HTML/000190.html http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Here is the corrected fare structure as of June 1:

$77.50 Low
$85.50 Mid-price
$95.50 Highest

Yes I did

But AQ also put fares on sale at $65 again since June 1 so it pays to be viligant and comparison shop the two

Wondering if you have the fare basis or know where you found this AQ fare for $65 OW. Not seen an ad in the paper or on AQ's website. Please let us know where we can take advantage of this deal http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
