How does one get a good unobtructed (by crowds of people) view of the fireworks - on the premise that one is either registered in a hotel on the Strip at that time, or assuming that one is not registered as a guest in any such hotel?

Well, the best view would probably be from the Voodoo Lounge (top of the Rio) or at one of the places on top of the towers at Palms. They are across the freeway, so you have an unobstructed, panoramic view of all the casinos shooting the fireworks. Also great views from either end of the Strip - top of Stratosphere (I wouldn't suggest that) or from Mandalay Bay Foundation Room. Those places will be jammed, you might have to book far in advance, and they might not let just anyone book. You may have to be a registered guest - call and check for details.
The fireworks are spread out - on the rooftops of several casinos up and down the Strip. They are coordinated to all go off at the same time, with the exact same fireworks, with a musical background. I can see them from my balcony at home, but to be honest, also have my television on to get that bird's eye view from the local television cameras.
To see ALL of the casinos fireworks - try the places I mentioned. But if you are in a room towards the top of any casino on the Strip, with a view towards the Strip, you should be able to see at least one, if not two, three or more, sets of the fireworks going off.
Most people congregate on the street, somewhere between Bellagio and Caesars...from there you can see it all, but on the street, it does get a little crazy.
BTW, the fireworks have gone off without a hitch for the past few years, but there have been a few "iffy" years - if the wind is too strong, they won't do it and the last two years have just barely made it! Just warning you.

So enlighten us...how did you do it?
How much did it cost?
And is it on the bar floor or at the restaurant floor?

A cheaper alternative is from the opposite side ie the higher floors of the Las Vegas Hilton. If you happen to get invited to one of the Hiltons Casino guest parties you are escorted to the pool area ( on the 5th floor level??) and get a really great view ( as you freeze to death :D )
Incidentally the fireworks do NOT all go off at once but are timed to go in sequence from the participating properties starting from Mandalay Bay and heading up ( or is it down??) the strip.

Actually I am probably naive but are you suggesting that if I don't have some sort of reservation I wont be able to get in? I assumed people can still just go in normally. I assume it will be extremely crowded with long lines but I thought I still would be able to get in. At least I am hoping so. I am Diamond so hopefully that helps, if not there are other ways to have fun. ;)

In a forest clearing stands the elm

Remember closely what you see,
for tomorrow it's just a memory.

Just to be safe, call the Rio now and see what is going on.
As one of the most prime locations to see the fireworks, I would be very, very surprised if they are not planning a special by-invitation-only party, or at least be charging far more than their cover charge. And although the two floors are rather large, they can only handle so many people, so once again, I would be surprised if you can just wander in on NYE without some sort of reservation.
I might be wrong, but as I say, give a call to find out - and maybe you can buy a ticket in advance and won't have to wait in lines.

A great place that really isn't well know, that is very cheap, is the airport long term parking garage. I watched them there last year b/c I picked up some people coming in at 2230 and their flight was late. I got there about 2355 and we went to floor 5 of 6. Parked and walked to the rail - it was a great view. I'd recommend getting there at about 2315 or so, that way you can get a good spot on the top floor...
Also the lady on the way out let us out free even though we would have owed liek $3... Either way $3 for 1 hour, $4 for 2 is a pretty good way to see the firstworks - esp. since the airport is only like 1 mile south of the strip.

Hmm...while I don't doubt your story, I am just wondering how in the hell you got back to your hotel after this? I mean, The Strip is closed down to traffic until about 2:00 AM at the earliest, every parking garage is filled up and often they don't let people drive out until 3:00 AM or even later. Yes, The Strip is only about a mile away, but on New Year's Eve, it might as well be in Botswana for the time and trouble it will take to get there.

trekwars2000 is a local and probably not go to a strip hotel.
This year, Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin road will be open allowing access to the Western Strip casinos. Koval and Paradise will provide access to the Eastern Strip casinos. Twain aka Spring Mountain or Sands will be open westbound from Koval to the Venetian and Wynn entrances only. Overall, it should be pretty smooth unless you need to cross the strip. Desert Inn should be a good east/west thoroughfare.
