Other Car Rental Programs/Partners (ie. Alamo, Enterprise, Sixt) - How does enterprise now if the car leaves a particular area

As I was looking at the rate for a car, it said miles were unlimited when the car stayed in PA and the surrounding area. How does enterprise know if the car leaves the area?

They ride along with you.

Actually, it's probably a GPS unit. Seems like a silly rule to me, though.

They don't. It's completely based on the honor system. The way most people get busted is if the car breaks down outside of the area. When that happens, Enterprise will say you broke the contract and charge you for every mile beyond the standard 150 per day.

I agree, it's a stupid rule. I've seen some Budget and Thrifty locations using this rule too.

They really don't, but if you need roadside, get into an accident, or get a ticket outside of the "zone" your contracted rate will be void and you will be given a "new" rate.

You can ask them to either include other states in the contract (as I did once) or ask what would happen if you go outside the "zone" (most likely if you inform them before you sign the contract, you will be given 150 miles a day (40 cents each additional mile) and you"ll be in the clear

Agree... also, just to add, as discussed on other threads... Enterprise is split up into "groups/regions" and each "groups/regions" owned their own cars... what that means is that if your car that your renting breaks down, they would have to rent a car from the office nearest to you and they woud have to send someone to pick up the car that was broken after it is fixed while the office that rented you the new rental would have to send someone to pick up the car you returned when your done... looks like a huge and expensive mess. When I asked to add another state, they normally do, but they made it clear that if the car breaks down, it will be really really hard for them to help me out if the car breaks down and becomes unfixable within a reasonable time.

Actually, they've got a pretty good system in place for getting cars fixed out of area. Usually they'll rent you another vehicle from the office nearest to the repair shop, and once you return the vehicle at the end of your rental they'll take care of getting the cars back to their proper locations.

What the hell are you guys talking about. Enterprise car rentals include unlimited miles for all USA rentals. There is no reason to lie...just tell Enterprise where you are driving.

You may want to take back your statement.

I just played with the Enterprise website, and got the following condition on one of my test quotes:

MILEAGE IS UNLIMITED WITHIN TEXAS, ARKANSAS, OKLAHOMA, AND LOUISIANA. IF TRAVELING OUTSIDE OF THESE STATES, MILEAGE WILL BE CHARGED AT 200 MILES FREE DAY, 1500 FREE WEEK, AND 3000 FREE MONTH. EACH ADDITIONAL MILE WILL BE .25 MILE.

In many, many, many markets Enterprise limits your mileage when renting from a non-airport location.
