I have purchased a RT coach ticket JFK <-> HKG. Is it possible to use my AA miles to get an upgrade to Business?

You can use CX's Asia Miles to upgrade, but not AA's AAdvantage miles. But even with Asia Miles, I'd bet that this would be a tough upgrade, especially if you're talking about the non-stop flights. It can be difficult to get D availability on those flights (i.e., paid discounted business class fares), and as for business or first class award tickets... lots of luck getting those.
