The Israel Airports Authority is investigating a security breach at Ben-Gurion International Airport after an Israeli citizen flew to New York at the weekend with a pistol in his hand luggage.

The incident constituted the second security breach at the airport in a few days. A few days ago, a youth succeeded in carrying a flare onto an El Al flight to Johannesburg without the potentially-dangerous device being detected by security personnel.

WOW!!! I never thought I'll live to see this!

The guy probably got through because he was Israeli and the security let their guard down.

I am gonna ditto this. I know that they don't check the Israelis as much as others.
At the same time, I give him massive credit for telling them what happened. Impressive.

What happened with the flare on the Jo'burg flight? aren't these things x-rayed?

I flew AA to and from Europe but JFK was the only place where they high-powered X-rayed the bags, then hand searched one. LHR did a manual search. BA didn't do any searches, and LAX and MIA just used matching and profiling, which works, too. If you are an AA Platinum, you are less of a threat, in my opinion.

The guy was so nervous that he got through that he called the Israeli Consulate himself to tell them.

What else was he supposed to do? Try to bring it back with him on his flight home?
The only people who can carry a gun in NYC are Police (or retired police) Jewellers who are licensed, and federal agents. Not Israeli tourists. Dumping it in a garbage can would be extremely irresponsible. If he called the cops and told them he might have ended up in the slammer. His best bet was the consulate.
