Wonder if QF got the A332s for free, as that seems to be the traditional Airbus sweetener. A good solution, but no delivery before Dec 2007 in this announcement, so QF capacity will be tight for next year, unless they decide to wet lease something (hard to see that happening).

Aircraft # Delivery From

A388 20 August 2008
B73H 05 February 2008
A332 02 Mid-2007 (QF)
A332 02 Mid-2007 (JQ)
A332 04 December 2007 (QF)

Possibly additional Q400s too...

The 5 extra 737-800s come as no surprise. Earlier in the year, Qantas sought $350 million for additional 73H and A320. I was expecting them to be delivered towards the end of this year or early-mid-2007, but will now be delivered from February 2008. This also raises the question about their planned configuration - will they be fitted with high density J? (Rumour mentioned in fleet thread).

It's my understanding the extra 4 A330-200s will be in addition to the 2 announced as part of the A380 compensation package. 6 A330-200s will be useful and will allow non-stop Mumbai services. Peter Gregg has already mentioned that the 332 will definitely be used on China and India services.

Mr Dixon said the A380 was clearly the most suitable aircraft for Qantas to deploy on dense longhaul routes from Australia to the United States, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and possibly the Middle East.

Middle East.... @:-) A380s to Frankfurt

Certainly a few big years ahead for Qantas..

No surprises with this announcement. In fact I am almost more surprised they have not ordered more as even 20 may not be enough birds to ensure all the those key routes are covered, i.e. MEL/SYD-LHR/HKG/SIN/LAX/BKK/SFO/FRA.

I am sure that comment directed at EK who have made no secret about bringing A380s to Australia.
