either A000-004-GRV-114D works more than once or it doesnt. i doubt it does. (have seen people specifically say for other cards these codes do not work more than once) so if you try to use it they will probably say its been used. but theyre not going to tell you youre getting the points and that it works and then later on not give you the points.

This actually constitutes a huge discount. Assuming you're going to spend $250 on travel over the course of the next year, you can use those 25k points to save $250 by purchasing the tix through Amex. Net cost of a year's plat membership: $145, a smidge less than gold. After a year, though...

1. How long does it really take to get your new card? (I just used the offer and the rep told be that I would have my card within 2 weeks. Sounded like kind of a long time to me.)
2. Do you really see the points posted after the first purchase? (The rep also told me I would see the points after the 1st purchase...so to they appear after the 1st billing cycle.)
This offer finally pushed me over the edge. I had considered getting the card just for the travel benefits. Could never really justify the cost before, but the points equal a free domestic ticket for me...so it finally makes better sense.
Not sure if it will last more than a year, but you never know.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Nikki I called to get the card last week and in 3 days . I made my first purchase and will get the 25k points which I will will transfer to an airline inmmediately and then either cancel or move down to a cheaper product. The card is useless in my opinion as in the usa we don't have the cool cards such as the thai air platinum or the foreign plat cards that come with priority pass or the aeromexico plat card that gives you platino status and upgrades.
So get your points and drop to a lower product or cancel after you get the 25k. I have gotten all the top flight sign up bonuses from delta offering 50k miles on a biz card to 50k mr on a gold charge card. The benefits on the amex plat card are quite useless in my opinion.

Do you really see the points posted after the first purchase?
USA American Express Membership Rewards promotional points typically post two to three months after the qualifying event. Earned points typically post when the next statement is printed, provided the bill has been paid. For example, if your closing date were today and you had charged $1,000 those 1,000 points would post around December 1.

There is apparently no way to transfer directly MR points to AA miles, although, it can be done by using MRs to get Starpoints and then using the Starpoints to get AA miles. However, the result is that you get a little less than 1 AA miles for 2 MRs. :td:
As a new MR cardholder, the best use I have been able to discern so far is to get Delta miles at 1 to 1.

To my knowledge American Airlines has never participated in Membership Rewards. It is possible to use the points for travel on American by transferring to Mexicana which offers award travel on AA.
See below Membership Rewards transfer partners. Most airlines are 1000:1000, but the JetBlue and Southwest programs do not use miles. Hotel point transfers are generally unattractive, I have noted the ratios.

The transfer ratio is not quite that good. 3 MR points = 1 SPG
If you take SPG up on the 20,000 points equals 25,000 miles deal, then 2.4MR points = 1 AA mile. Still lousy.

was that a one time fee or an annual fee?
mia
Feb 4, 07, 12:16 am
$395 is the annual fee for the personal Platinum Card. There is also a Business Platinum Card for $300. (The business version is less because it excludes the retail shopping benefits at Saks and Neiman Marcus/Bergdorf.) American Express annual fees are largely based on the "benefits" associated with the card, not the "rewards" program.
still haven't gotten my points ... i upgraded on november 18th 2006, and upon calling membership rewards today they told me it'd be 12-14 weeks (the end of 14 weeks is near the end of february).

so who's right? i'm setting up a "dispute" case now ...

FYI--
I applied for the card in November, based on this thread. Points hadn't posted as of today. I called the phone number on the back of my card and mentioned that I hadn't gotten my points.
She put me on hold for a few minutes while she called the membership rewards line. She then came back and asked if I still had the promotional code. Since I wasn't sure if this one was unique, I fibbed and said "Maybe, I'm not sure if I can find it". She said that it was OK, she could give them one of the ones she had, but she wanted to know when I applied, because she had one that expired in September, etc. I told her it was November, and she said she had one that was valid from October-January so that was probably it.
Given the above, I am assuming that the codes aren't unique.
I was put on hold for a few more minutes and she came back and told me that it was added to my account, and the points will automatically be added 12-14 weeks after my first purchase (which puts me in mid-late March).
Moral of the story: if your points haven't posted within 14 weeks of your first purchase, best is to call in. I don't see the harm in waiting the full 14 weeks (if anything, it might make help you since you'd likely have forgotten the original offer details).

Hi, is it possible to call in with the OPs reservation code but instead of apply for a new account convert an existing AmEx card and still get the bonus. IE. have a starwood card, call in with the promo for 25,000 points and convert it to Platinum Charge?
If not, what is the highest amount of MR points for a personal card in signup bonuses? Could I use one of those promos with a card convert?
Thanks for all you help.

I have a code for 15,000 points for a plat upgrade its A-000-003-ETS-15K. Didn't use it myself as I don't need Plat so if its a one time code then it should still be active. Expires 31 Dec 06.
way back you offered this code and I called in before the end of dec (while they needed another code on a mailing, they input that I called in with an offer so ultimately gave me 15K. Thanks! ...miles just posted after upgrading in november.

I emailed AMEX CS last week and was told that the code was no longer valid.

Does anyone know of a current promotion in the 20k range for upgrading from Gold to Platinum? I feel sick. I just upgraded from Gold to Platinum without knowing about these particular programs. I figure if someone can show a link, I can convince them to give me the points anyway.

FYI--
I applied for the card in November, based on this thread.
I don't see the harm in waiting the full 14 weeks (if anything, it might make help you since you'd likely have forgotten the original offer details).
grr...
So I called in today, 15 weeks after my first purchase. Platinum line said this is a MR issue so they transferred me there. MR representative said she couldn't find anything on this. She offered to set up a case so that they could call me back in 2-3 weeks.
This was obviously absurd, so I asked to speak with a supervisor. When he came on the line, I politely explained the situation and that I was frustrated.
He put me on hold for about 5 minutes, and then told me that the points would be posted within 24 hours.
While I had originally intended to keep the card, i just got a great offer to join worldclubs for $250, with about 20K worldperks miles as a bonus. So I think I'll cancel my Amex soon after the points post.
EDIT: They did post, but not under the right offer (not that it matters):

my 25000 points just posted on friday (along with some other bonus points). yay! nearly five months, though.
i sent a message earlier in the week to inquire about this ... this is the reply i received:
Thank you for your e-mail and Iâm sorry to hear that you have not yet received the 25,000 bonus points for upgrading your Platinum Card.
Upon further review of your account, it looks as if we currently have an investigation opened to resolve this matter for you. Our Membership Rewards Department will be contacting you directly via U.S. Mail with a resolution. We do not have a timeframe as to when this matter should be resolved, but I am hopeful that it will be within the next 2-3 weeks. I do apologize if you were not advised of a timeframe when you contacted us on 02/07/07.
We want to wait the appropriate timeframe so that the 25,000 points are not duplicated. If for some reason the points are not issued at that time, please contact me via secured message and I will be more than happy to take care of this matter for you.
I thank you in advance for your patience. Mr. Mensch, I hope you know your Membership since 1986 is important to us.
they wanted to wait to make sure they didn't inadvertently credit me twice. so what if they did? they'd reverse the 2nd transaction and get on with life . . .

I just called today. I was considering upgrading to the Platinum AMEX anyway since the 4 free companion tix benefit was announced. I will now cancel my other AMEX cards that charge an annual fee (incl Delta SkyMiles gold, Starwood, etc.).
Also, as of 3/1, the annual fee has increased to $450 and $175 for up to 3 additional cards.
The CSR assured me that the 25k MR points would post in 4-8 weeks.

remember if you have additional cards, they each get 4 companion per year.
i have both plat and starwood, considering its so cheap, and has good hotel / oneworld flight options.
Recreation
Mar 22, 07, 8:08 pm
So we're flying to Hawaii spring '08. In theory, I can ask for 3 additional cards for $175 for my husband and my 2 daughters. We can use their cards and certificates to book another family of 4 for the price of 4 tixs + $650 in annual fees. We can then split the cost of the tickets between the 2 families.
If we booked the tix without the companion tix, we're looking at
Avg "every day" ticket price: $700 each x 8 = $5600 or $2800 per family
If we were able to book all 8 tickets with companion tix:
Buy 1, get 1 free @ theoretical price: ($1100 for 2 tix) x 4 = $4400 + $650 annual fees = $5150 or $2575 per family, which is a savings of $225 plus we'll all get Crown Room access.
Not a bad deal, if there are sufficient seats at a reasonable rate. Hawaii flights have to be over $899 but I'm finding plenty of fares that exceed that on both United and American.
I may have to get the companion cards just for that benefit.

It's the 2-for-1 companion tix that are discussed at length on this thread:
I had upgradded from Gold to Platinum last month, but just noticed this thread today.
I called the CSR asking when my promotional points were going to post to my account, acting as if I'd been given the promotional code. She gave me the typical 12-14 weeks response, but said she would note on my account that I was expecting the 25k points.
I didnt give her the code, but will to the next person I call in a few weeks.
This is kind of a backwards way to do this, I'll post here if it works.

That's awesome it worked for you! Amex is really stingy with MR points when it comes to upgrading. I went ahead and took my 25k bonus offer rather than holding out for 50k or more. It seems like the 25k is alot more common now. They sure aren't very quick about getting the card to you. I should have had mine expedited. I upgraded over a week ago and haven't received it yet.

I called customer service asking about the 25k bonus stating that i did not have the code or letter with me.
The first customer service person told me that it was not possible to get 25k points w/o the code.
And that if I ever found the promotion letter that I would need to call the number listed in the letter.
The second time, 1 minute later, I called requesting the 25k points the customer service person told me to hold and that she was going to check on the promotion.
She then gave me this number, 888-814-9099, w/ the code FH39-0001.
<I wouldn't use the code. I would just go ahead and focus on promotion.>
I called that number and explained that I wanted to upgrade to platinum and also get the 25k bonus.
I gave her the code. She said it didnt work but that she would try to find another one.
She found one and now i'm a platinum.
She indicated that I will get the points after my first charge.
So I anticipate getting them in about 6-8 weeks.
If anyone's going to call this number I wouldn't use the code.
I would just go ahead and focus on talking about the promotion with whoever you talk to.

My 25k points posted right away as well, way to go Amex! They had to overnight me a card since they sent mine out so late...so now my 2nd one came in the mail today in the fancy little box. Tried to get the 25K offer last week, with no luck so far. I had received the 15K offer, and called AMEX to ask if there were better offers, mentioning spefically the 25K offer. The rep was helpful, and put me on hold a couple of times to look for offer codes that would work, but didn't find anything.
I told her no thanks on the Platinum upgrade. She said that her team leader was out last week but would be back today (Monday), and said that she would review with him and call me to let me know the outcome - either way.
So far, no call today.

I pestered the hell out of them and called 4 or 5 times asking about promotions and got nowhere. Then all of a sudden I start getting the 25k offers. It's probably just a coincidence as I'd get random 25k, 15k, upgrade for no incentive, etc. type offers. If you can get the 25k, that's not a bad deal....that's comparable to a $300 plane ticket or a night at the MGM Grand in Vegas, so that will partially pay your fee.

I wanted to upgrade my business gold to platinum but she told me that the code was for a personal platinum. I was going to open a personal account anyway. I just called to cancel my gold MR card. I hoped that if I said that I would keep the card provided I was given the 25,000MR bonus to upgrade to Plat. that they would grant it. They couldn't do it. I ended up canceling the card out of frustration.

Not so fast......
The deal ain't dead yet.
A short while ago I called the number given by the OP and used that RSVP code and got the upgrade with the 25K miles. After I gave the AmEx agent the code she asked me to hold and returned after a minute or two. She said, "congratulations" and I got the upgrade and the miles. I was told the miles should post in about six weeks or so.
I had tried a few times over the past few weeks to get an upgrade from gold to platinum - with points - but was never able to, no matter what I tried, e.g., new account, etc.

Its definitely worth a try though -- I called and immediately received the 25,000 bonus points without much effort. If you get a rep that's resistant, you may just want to put in a second call and see if someone else is more willing to give you the bonus.

It's the former. The wife just got upgraded using the same code but said she did not have the letter with her.
As I had advised, she took the name and ID locator of the rep who promised the points.
She was told that she would have her Plat card by 10/24 -- in time for her upcoming trip to MSY on CO on 11/1 and a day after her Prez club membership expires. ^

Suppose I do apply for the Platinum AMEX, would I still be able to get the benefits for the Starwood AMEX, namely all those points???
Thanks!
I don't think so. The Amex Platinum give you MR, Starwood is a separate deal entirely. If they can be combined, I would be all over it.

Anyone have a code for 25k MR points (or even 15k?) for new applications, i.e., not a current AMEX cardholder?
I had a 15k one I turned down when I got a 25k offer later. I might have thrown it in the trash, but when I get home this afternoon I'll look through my pile of mail on the counter. If I find it, I'll post the code since I've already got a Plat. card.

That's really my problem, too. I want the Platinum AMEX, only if I can get a large MR bonus to sign up, mostly for the companion certs. But I don't think I'd even use the card -- because I'd prefer Starwood points on my Starwood Amex.
They really need to combine them. It seems simple to just give Platinum Amex holders a choice -- MR or Starwood points?

Called yesterday and ungraded from gold to platinum for the 25000 points.
Which is nice since they gave me 25000 when I went from green to gold a year or so ago. Thanks to the poster who provided the rsvp code at the beginning of this thread. It still works. I had been trying to wangle a 50 or 100 thosuand point invitation with no success. Good luck to all !

^Got an email this morning presenting the opportunity to upgrade to Plat for 15,000 miles....."
Got the same thing in my inbox as well. I've been considering it for awhile, and am on the fence. The companion travel is pretty enticing, as is the Airline lounge admittance. The SPG Gold is attractive as well, but herein lies my dilema...I've been using the SPG Amex almost exclusively for the last 7-8 months, and am within a few thousand of the $30,000 required to get me comped SPG Gold (by the end of the year). I had originally considered getting the Amex PLAT to go ahead a get SPG Gold, then shift the majority of my spending to my HHonors AMEX, where I can reach their Gold level for a lower threshold of $20k/year spending. However, thanks to this wonderful board, I discoverd the Hilton racing promotion fast track, and am now only 1 stay away from Gold. So, do I save the $450 and charge a bit more on SPG Amex to get gold that way, or get PLAT, have my SPG and Hilton Gold, and shift spending to another card?? (I'm thinking one of the AA cards...as a newly minted AA PLT collecting AA miles is my new obsession!) FYI, I'm just not really interested in the MR program, and would like to garner the majority of my points for direct airline or hotel points/miles....
I'm really just thinking out loud here, but if anyone would like to chime in with a suggestion of what they would do here, I'm open...

Grumble ... I'd tried out for the offer in Post #1 a week after getting my Plat, they said they'd do it, then never did. :(
... so, wondering if I could still try for this I'd decided to try again last week, except this time instead of calling I sent a secure E-mail. I'd said "I tried, a week after getting my Plat, 25K miles using <the code in the initial post> and although the CS rep said they'd post in 8-12 weeks, I never got them. Is there a record of this call, and can I still get the points?". I heard back from AmEx the next day, and they told me "I only see a current promo for 15K MR points, and we have no record of the previous call, so we'll give you that, instead" and they were credited immediately. I can live with that, esp. since I'd given up on the points anyway- it added nicely to the current total.
Lesson learned (again!)- ALWAYS use the on-line secure E-mail service when talking to AmEx for everything that's not urgent. There's a record, you get fairly quick turnaround times and (although this isn't much of an issue since going Plat) you don't have to try and translate from Bangalore-glish.

If you call the (954) number on the back of your card you will be connected to the Ft. Lauderdale, FL based call center.
If you call and (800) number and are connected to a call center in India, ask to be connected to a state-side representative and you will be transferred immidiately. ^

that would depend on the time of day/night one calls. "State-side" are not available after a certain time ie 10pm CET...

I just called the number and tried the same code (A000-004-GRV-114D) and got the points. However, I did mention to the rep that I had already received several letters in the past explaining that I was pre-approved for the card. So I'm not sure if I got the points using this number or because the offer had been sent to me by mail before.
Its definitely worth a try though -- I called and immediately received the 25,000 bonus points without much effort. If you get a rep that's resistant, you may just want to put in a second call and see if someone else is more willing to give you the bonus.
Thanks for the OP -- this is my first experience and post on flyertalk. Great site!
Just wanted to follow up that the 25,000 points were indeed added to my account and it actually happened within a month. I know some posters were told they would receive them but never saw them posted to their accounts. It is happening tho; dont know why it some instances but not others.

I called up about a week after receiving my Plat AMEX card and requested the 25,000 MR promotion. (I wasn't solicited to apply for the Plat AMEX, and did not receive any bonus or RSVP code from AMEX.) I gave the MR agent the bonus code from the initial post in this thread, and after some back and forth, I was enrolled in a promotion (not clear if it's the same promotion) for new card members, whereby I'll receive 25,000 MR points after I spend $1,000 on the card (no time limit). I'm not sure if this means I failed or succeeded in obtaining the promotion I requested.

Success, it sounds like.
Hey folks, in another thread we realized that if you do get the free 25,000 MR points, you can turn right around and launder them into 1:1 to AAdvantage, SWA, etc. (It works out nicely, since 25K points is the max you can process using this scheme within a calendar year.) Here's the thread with all the details.
That works out to three "free" roundtrips on SWA or one domestic roundtrip on American, etc. It's a nice extra benefit.

Anyone with a Business Gold, keep an eye on your e-mail box. Today I got an offer for a $200 credit after my first purchase when upgrading to plat. No RSVP code or mention of it in the page they link me to, so it seems targeted. However, I think I will sign up and afterwards ask about the 15 or 25k MR offer too.

Did anybody else sign up without receiving this offer? (I applied less than a month ago before finding this forum) I called to try to get their customer service department to apply the points. The supervisor gave me a run around how it was a marketing program and they had no control. She called my bluff and I couldn't back down. The problem is I signed up because I liked the benefits. Any chance I can reapply with a new code?

Sure you can reapply. Keep in mind most of the offers are for the first time cardmembers only.
