California - Del Mar/San Diego: Beaches and seafood?

I've extended a business trip by a couple days to spend it in San Diego. I grabbed a cheap PL hotel up in Del Mar and would essentially like to spend my time on a beach reading a book and doing a little body-surfing. :) Can anyone from the area (or who knows the area) direct me to the best beaches? (I define "best" by great sand, clean water and, if possible, small crowds... I'll be there mostly early afternoon on Friday and possibly Saturday morning).
Afterwards, I have a goal of eating seafood!! Where are the best (and least expensive) seafood restaurants near the Del Mar area? Any specific recommendations?

The beach in Del Mar is lovely. Otherwise, come north to Moonlight Beach (http://www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com/moonlight.htm) in Encinitas.
Eat at Pacifica Del Mar (http://www.pacificadelmar.com/).

I'm particularly fond of Torrey Pines State Beach (http://www.torreypine.org/parks/ocean.html), just south of Del Mar...
Not only is it apt to be quiet on a weekday, but the possibility of encountering dolphin and porpises in the break is not unheard of.
One warning however, if you are not used to West Coast surfing and body bording....that water is chilled by the Humbolt Current, and is freaking cold.
(like about 65 deg. today just down the coast at Scripps Pier (http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/spac.html)) Don't plan on playing too long or bring a wet suit.

mlshanks, I got your e-mail too late to be helpful, but you're spot on!! The water was freakin' cold. I was up in Newport a couple weeks ago and distinctly remember frolicking in the surf much to my heart's content. This weekend, I barely waded in past the knees. :)
And, Carol, thank you for the recommendations. I had a great brunch at Pacifica Breeze Cafe, and found my way to Brigantine on Coronado for some seafood. It was fantastic.
