I have a gold amex and wanted to upgrade to the platinum. I have had my gold for about 3 months and want to upgrade for better benefits. When would be the best time to apply? Is the platinum hard to obtain?

i upgraded a year ago. instant approval online.
if you live in the US, you can apply for it/upgrade to it. there are some countries where it is invite only.
personally, i think its worth the extra $250 for FHR. and im probably going to end up getting centurion in the future.

good point! lol ^
I started with Gold and AMEX offered me the Plat after about 3 months. I must say I like the benefits of the Plat more. The only time I regret the upgrade at all is when the annual fee shows up on my statement!

I am looking at getting the Plat card again primarily because of the free companion ticket on C/F purchases. Are there any hidden terms? Is the fare that AMEX charge the same as what the airline charges? Seems too good to be true that one can get an extra $4-6000 ticket for free.
Any advice?

You must purchase an unrestricted ticket - not the discounted first/business ticket.

although i was just looking at that the other day, it seems that continental only sells full fare tickets.. for reasonable prices.
i was pricing itins to their caribbean destinations. and there was only full fare for what would usually be the price of discount/restricted.
