You may try Enterprise too. They rent Volvo's in several states.

Which category does it fall under? Premium? I thought Enterprise had just Chargers and Maximas in that category.

Usually luxury. You might have to call the rental office to see if they have them...they can be hit or miss.

Lads,
thanks for your interest,
but why is the S40 - V50 classed as a LUXURY
when only the size of a Ford Focus.
Any thoughts.

Depending on the location, I've seen the V50 being specifically available to reserve at Hertz (e.g. YUL); as for the S40, I've seen it as well, but I don't believe it is bookable (special class)

Why is a CTS classified as a luxury vehicle when it's smaller than an Impala?
Why does an Aston V8 cost more than 100 grand when it's got less power than a Corvette Z06?
Why does an SUV cost more than most sports cars when they're worth nothing more than junk?

Just because it is a Volvo, which, in the US at least, is considered a luxury make. Thus it will be in the same category as the Cadillacs, Lincolns, Jaguars, etc. by the rental car companies, regardless of size.

I think only Hertz in Canada carries the S40/V50. I can't remember the last time I've seen one at a US location -- plenty of V70s and S80s though.
I would try Enterprise -- many of the airport locations seem to have them available. Some city locations (near Volvo dealers) will also carry them as loaner cars.

I'm sorry for digressing but has anyone ever seen a car from a European marque in the Enterprise lot @ATL or EWR?

Sure. Volvo's, and a couple of years ago they were renting Saab S3 convertibles too...

It's a small luxury car.
Consider the BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-class, Lexus IS, and Acura TSX. They are all small cars, but considered more luxurious than typical small cars like the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, etc..
More extreme examples would include several Bentley models, which are EPA classified as subcompacts or compacts for interior room, but are definitely considered luxury cars.

Do you mean the Continental GT/Azure etc. are classified as sub-compacts???
