As a very Gold GF Gold flyer, I tried to get Etihad to status match me. Unfortunately their response was no way. One positive is that they responded very quickly. See below:

With regards to your letter dated September 27, 2006, please be informed that the Etihad Guest Programme has three Membership levels which are Guest Membership, Silver Membership and Gold Membership. Upon enrolment in to our Etihad Guest programme each Guest is required to commence from the Guest Membership. Each Guest is qualified on the basis of their activities which are measured in either Miles or Segments flown. On completion of this requirement each Guest is able to move on to our next level of Memberships. I hope you understand that our decision is based on a number of factors and aims to give each member of the programme an equal opportunity to progress while enjoying the benefits and rewards our programme offers. Therefore, we will be unable to upgrade your Guest Membership to Silver Membership or Gold Membership. We sincerely regret any disappointment our decision may cause you. Im a hair's length away from lifetime Gold with GF...anyone know if EK would status match there??

They don't do it (either officially or unofficially) but if you ask a CSR rep / Skywards CSR they might be able to consider your case indivually.
