Hertz - Question....Why do you rent from Hertz?

I have never been able to figure out why someone would rent from Hertz. I constantly find them to be either the most expensive or 2nd most expensive in every market I've ever checked. They offered me OK corporate rates but they were still much higher than their compeditors. As I see it a Ford Taurus from one company is the same as a Ford Taurus from another company. I personally don't know why someone would pay more for the same car.

So my question is....Why do you rent from Hertz?

(This hopefully will be a fun and informing thread)

NOT AGAIN!!!

This question, or similar, comes up all the time, at least one time every month.

Here's a great thread to start reading...

I'm a petrol head. If you think of a car as an appliance, than you just might not get it.

Our corporate rates are the same for Hertz, Avis, and National.

Funny thing, I rent nearly 100 cars / year, always reserve F (Taurus size), but can't remember the last time I actually got one. It's always been something more interesting / better. Volvo, Infiniti, Cadillac, Hyundai (Azera), Magnum, 300c, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Hummer, etc.

I get back almost everything I spend as free rentals for my vacations:

Photos (http://www.thaitum.com/photos_public/hertz/index.html)

The Hummer H2 on Kona would have cost nearly $3,200 for the week, but instead it only cost 5k points. Those points took me only around $3k in spend to get.

No other rental company gives me free cars that I like to drive when it really matters, on my family vacations.

The points are also a great value around NYC. At EWR it costs $60-$90 / day with tax. Currently it only costs 250 points for a free weekend day.

I also value good service. Hertz is mediocre-good, but the other companies all suck.

Not only NeverLost but it is worth it to be Hertz GOLD member. I like to have my cars there ready for me to pick up. I've been screwed with other companies who oversell their inventory & hope for no-shows or late shows. Convenience for me is definitely worth the few extra $$$s.

#1 Gold has worked well for me. Nice upgrades with the #1 Gold status. Convenience. Good service (agreeing with others that "good" is a relative term, and that Hertz may not be "good" until compared with the bad service seen in other companies). Cars ready to go when I get there. I'm not ego-fed by the "name in lights" thing, but it sure makes locating "my" car easier.

I can usually get decent USAA rates with them.

I've noticed that their shuttle bus generally runs very frequently compared to some of the other vendors (notably Budget, who I used to have to use per my empliyer's policy). Given that I can usually reserve a car at the same or better rate as the traditionally inexpensive providers, this shuttle issue alone makes it worth it to me to use Hertz.

I also like using Hertz when my Marriott has a Hertz desk -- I often return the car at the hotel the night before I leave. The savings from the day of rental offsets the cab fare, and then I don't need to navigate to the airport at 4am when I'm barely awake.

Nice snaps, Tummy. I never knew that Hertz rented XLRs! Did you post a ride report on it by any chance??

Btw, I thought Hertz and other major rental companies did not allow renters to take their cars off-road in Hawaii. Isn't that H2 being driven on gravel tracks?

I like the Prestige collection at Hertz (Rented 3 Jaguars in 2 years(after October 2006)). And the #1 Gold Club previleges afforded upon me. Those alone are the two reasons I rent from Hertz! Neverlost, as other posters pointed out, is the third reason I rent from Hertz (If I forget my GPS attachment for my laptop!)

Unfortunatly Hertz doesn't appear to have XLRs anymore, replacing them and the Jag XK8 with Corvette convertibles. I'm glad I was able to sample one before they got rid of them. I guess it's just hard to turn a profit on something so expensive and with a limited audience.

I posted my take on the XLR here (near the end of the thread):

Re: H2
They don't "allow" it, does not mean that you can't do it, just that you're liable if you break something, or if the car gets stranded. They could also void your rental contract.

The gravel was at the end of the lava trail, though it was well worn by all the other visitors. This was our first time driving a car "offroad" so we didn't take a lot of risks. We didn't go over really large rocks, but more like deep ruts or holes. I wouldn't have even attempted the trail in a SUV that didn't have low range gearing, though one could probably have made it. We originally reserved a Navigator for that trip and wouldn't have tried it in one of those either.

Not at ORD !!! I usually count 3-5 National or Avis shuttles before Hertz comes rolling up. Really fun at night in January!
