I'm based in CLT and was wondering where my next closest airport would be to catch an Air New Zeland flight to aukland would be?

Air NZ only fly to LAX & SFO in the USA, so either of those ports.

Indeed - Air New Zealand will happily sell you a journey including travel (on US Air) from CLT to either of those main California airports and then on to NZ or Australia or the Pacific Islands. The times I've booked, its about $100 more than the fare from LAX - cheaper and easier than sep. tickets.
Don't forget NZ also serve HNL (in the USA..), although I'm not sure if there are any CLT-HNL direct flights.

And HNL is served by 767 aircraft so no PTVs, premium Y or flat beds in biz class. Probably only worth it if you really want to stop in Hawaii :D
If you don't mind whether you connect in LAX or SFO I'd go for LAX if you're *G or flying biz (the NZ lounge is much, much nicer than the RCC in SFO) or SFO otherwise (generally a nicer airport and more convenient to connect).
